Congenital goitrous primary hypothyroidism in two German families caused by novel thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene mutations.

Congenital hypothyroidism occurs with a prevalence of approximately 1:3 500. Defects in thyroid hormone synthesis which lead to goitrous hypothyroidism account for 10-15% of these cases. Several genetic defects have been characterized and mutations in the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene are the most common cause for dyshormonogenesis.So far, more than 80 mutations in the TPO gene have been described, resulting in a variable decrease in TPO bioactivity. An outbreak of food poisoning due to a genogroup I norovirus.

Norovirus infection is associated with approximately 90% of epidemic non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis. The objective of this study is to describe an outbreak of norovirus genogroup I gastroenteritis which affected workers in a hospital and was attributed to food prepared by an infected food handler. Forty cases were detected, of whom 80% were interviewed. The index case was the cook employed in the hospital cafeteria. The following symptoms were observed: abdominal pain in 90·6%, vomiting in 71·9%, diarrhoea in 71·9%, general indisposition in 62·5%, headaches in 53·1% and fever in 32·4% of cases. Fecal assays detect hypersensitivity to cow's milk protein and gluten in adults with irritable bowel syndrome.

Background & Aims Some patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms suffer from food hypersensitivity (FH); their symptoms improve when they are placed on elimination diets. No assays identify patients with FH with satisfactory levels of sensitivity. To analyze anti-rotavirus antibodies in human milk in order to determine their isotypes and neutralizing activity on rotavirus strains representing different viral serotypes.One hundred seventy-three milk samples (65 colostrum, 55 transitional milk and 53 mature milk) obtained from 65 mothers were analyzed along with 49 serum samples collected just before delivery. Free amino acids in preterm and term milk from mothers delivering appropriate- or small-for-gestational-age infants.

Free amino acids were quantitated in human milk collected during the first month postpartum from mothers of appropriate preterm (26-32 and 33-36 wk gestation) and term (small or appropriate-for-gestational-age) infants. Glutamic acid and taurine were the most abundant amino acids in all four groups at all stages of lactation. The ratio of essential to nonessential amino acids was higher in colostrum than in mature milk although the total amino acid level of mature milk was double that of the colostrum. Bile salt-stimulated lipase activity in human colostrum from mothers of infants of different gestational age and birthweight.

The bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL) activity was measured in milk collected at 3–4 days postpartum (colostrum) from 36 mothers divided into three groups according to gestational age and birthweight of their infants. BSSL activity changed with the length of gestation. Preterm colostrum presented a mean activity significantly higher than the term groups (small-for-gestational age and appropriate-for-gestational age) which had similar values. Impact of lactation stage, gestational age and mode of delivery on breast milk microbiota.

There is an increasing evidence of the immunological role of breast milk (BM) microbiota on infant health. This study aims to analyze several determining factors of milk microbiota. A total of 96 milk samples from 32 healthy mothers (19 preterm vs 13 at term gestations; and 15 vaginal deliveries vs 17 Cesarean sections) were longitudinally collected. Microbiota composition was studied by quantitative PCR and the influence of lactation stage, gestational age and delivery mode was evaluated. Lifelong soya consumption in males does not increase lifespan but increases health span under a metabolic stress such as type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Soya consumption can decrease oxidative stress in animal models. Moreover, phytoestrogens such as genistein, present in soya, can mimic some of the beneficial effects of estrogens and are devoid of significant side effects, such as cancer. In this study, we have performed a controlled lifelong study with male OF1 mice that consumed either a soya-free diet or a soya-rich diet. We show that, although we found an increase in the expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes in soya-consuming mice, it did not increase lifespan.
