Age, morbidity, or something else? A residual approach using microdata to measure the impact of technological progress on health care expenditure
2020
This study measures the increment of health care expenditure (HCE) that can be attributed to technological progress and change in medical practice by using a residual approach and microdata. We examine repeated cross-sections of individuals experiencing an initial health shock at different point in time over a 10-year window and capture the impact of unobservable technology and medical practice to which they are exposed after allowing for differences in health and socioeconomic characteristics. We decompose the residual increment in the part that is due to the effect of delaying time to death, that is, individuals surviving longer after a health shock and thus contributing longer to the dem…
Technology and human sciences: A dialogue to be constructed or a common tread to be rediscovered?
2013
In this contribution we begin to discuss the thesis that an analysis of the similarities and differences of typical methodologies of human sciences, technology and hard sciences show some unforeseen but strong similarities between human sciences and technologies. In this context fuzzy sets ideas provide useful tools which help to render the analysis more quantitative but without loosing the connection with a purely descriptive analysis. These kinds of considerations would have been hardly conceivable in the setting of XIX Century conception of science. It is the development of Information sciences that has allowed these problems to emerge. In this paper we shall then briefly outline the gen…
Impact of Si on the high-temperature oxidation of AlCr(Si)N coatings
2022
The resistance of wear protective coatings against oxidation is crucial for their use at high temperatures. Here, three nanocomposite AlCr(Si)N coatings with a fixed Al/Cr atomic ratio of 70/30 and a varying Si-content of 0 at.%, 2.5 at.% and 5 at.% were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray in order to understand the oxidation behavior depending on their Si-content. Additionally, a partially oxidized AlCrSiN coating with 5 at.% Si on a sapphire substrate was studied across the coating thickness by depth-resolved cross-sectional X-ray nanodiffraction and scanning trans-mission electron microscopy to investigate the elemental composition, morphol…
Biomechanics of human ascending aorta and aneurysm rupture risk assessment
2021
Ascending aortic aneurysms (AsAA) and aortic dissections are life-threatening cardiovascular diseases. The main criteria for determining surgical intervention of AsAA are the maximum diameter or the increasing annual rate of the aneurysm. The mortality of the untreated aortic dissection can be 21% to 74%, depending on the delay of hospital admission. Our study aims to characterize the biomechanical properties of the ascending aorta and propose a patient-specific approach to assess the risks of rupture. The purpose of this PhD work is multifold. On the one hand, biaxial tensile tests were performed on AsAA samples obtained from one hundred patients with surgery of AsAA. The impact on the diffe…
Per un approccio retorico alle emozioni. Aristotele, Retorica, II,1-11
2021
Some Afterthoughts on Hopfield Networks
1999
In the present paper we investigate four relatively independent issues, which complete our knowledge regarding the computational aspects of popular Hopfield nets. In Section 2 of the paper, the computational equivalence of convergent asymmetric and Hopfield nets is shown with respect to network size. In Section 3, the convergence time of Hopfield nets is analyzed in terms of bit representations. In Section 4, a polynomial time approximate algorithm for the minimum energy problem is shown. In Section 5, the Turing universality of analog Hopfield nets is studied. peerReviewed
Comprehensive cardiovascular ECG-gated MDCT as a standard diagnostic tool in patients with acute chest pain
2007
Acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and aortic dissection are diseases associated with acute chest pain and may lead to severe morbidity and mortality. These diseases may not be trivial to diagnose in the settings of emergency room. ECG-gated multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT), already established for the assessment of pulmonary embolism and aortic dissection, provides reliable information regarding the triage of patients with acute coronary syndrome in the emergency room. MDCT recently appeared to be logistically feasible and a promising comprehensive method for the evaluation of cardiac and non-cardiac chest pain in emergency department patients. The possibility to sca…
Splenic lymphoma with complex gastro-spleno-diaphragmatic fistula: 3D laparoscopic multivisceral resection. The first literature case report
2020
Abstract Introduction Gastrosplenic fistula is a rare disease involving stomach and spleen that can lead to dangerous complications like massive gastrointestinal bleeding. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBC) is the principal pathological cause of gastrosplenic fistula. Case report We report a case of A 76-year-old caucasian woman came to the emergency room with fever for two week and gravative pain in left upper quadrant of the abdomen. CT scan of thorax and abdomen demonstrated an inhomogeneous hypodense large lymphomatous mass (10 × 6 cm) of upper pole of the spleen deformating medial profile and infiltrating gastric fundus and left diaphragm. with the diagnosis of complex gastro-splenic…
El ritmo de la sociabilidad festiva en las rallas de Valencia
2018
This paper is concemed with the experience of time in the Festival of the Fallas of Valencia. It attributes a central role to the concept of festive sociability. The first section summarises basic concepts. A second part describes the Festival. The third section deals with the community's collective memory and its cyclic sense of history. The fourth describes the annual cycle of the permanent festive sociability of the Falla. A fifth section is concemed with the intensification of the rhythm of festive sociability during the Festive Event; it produces a reorganisation of time and space which go along with other relevant changes at the personal and community levéis. The participants have an …
Impact of oral contraceptive use and menstrual phases on patellar tendon morphology, biochemical composition, and biomechanical properties in female …
2013
Sex differences exist with regards to ligament and tendon injuries. Lower collagen synthesis has been observed in exercising women vs. men, and in users of oral contraceptives (OC) vs. nonusers, but it is unknown if OC will influence tendon biomechanics of women undergoing regular training. Thirty female athletes (handball players, 18–30 yr) were recruited: 15 long-term users of OC (7.0 ± 0.6 yr) and 15 nonusers (>5 yr). Synchronized values of patellar tendon elongation (obtained by ultrasonography) and tendon force were sampled during ramped isometric knee extensor maximum voluntary contraction to estimate mechanical tendon properties. Furthermore, tendon cross-sectional area and lengt…
