PROSTATOSYMPHYSEAL FISTULA AFTER TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF THE PROSTATE

2001

The formation of a urethrosymphyseal fistula is a rare complication after transurethral resection of the prostate. It may develop secondary to previous radiation therapy of the pelvis. We describe a case of spontaneous fistula formation after transurethral resection of the prostate. CASE REPORT

Contribution of parental and school personnel smoking to health risk behaviours among Finnish adolescents.

2009

Abstract Background This study compared parental smoking with school personnel smoking in relation to adolescents' smoking behaviours, alcohol use, and illicit drug use. Methods A cross-sectional survey for 24,379 adolescents was linked to a survey for 1946 school employees in 136 Finnish schools in 2004-2005. Surveys included smoking prevalence reported by school staff, adolescents' reports of school staff and parental smoking, adolescents' own smoking behaviours, alcohol use, and illicit drug use. Multilevel analyses were adjusted for individual and school-level confounding factors. Results Parental smoking was associated with all health risk behaviours among both sexes (risk range 1.39 t…

Ovarian volume in normal and hyperandrogenic adolescent women

2015

Objective To study the threshold for increased ovarian size during different periods of adolescence. Design Cross sectional study with retrospective analysis. Setting University center. Patient(s) A total of 146 hyperandrogenic adolescent women and 72 healthy adolescent controls. Intervention(s) Intravaginal or transabdominal ovarian sonography. Main Outcome Measure(s) Determination of normal ovarian size during the different phases of adolescence calculated using the ellipsoid formula; calculation of threshold for increased ovarian size during different adolescent gynecologic ages and prevalence of increased ovarian size for hyperandrogenic girls at different gynecologic ages. Fear of falling and coexisting sensory difficulties as predictors of mobility decline in older women.

2012

BACKGROUND: Mobility decline, the coexistence of several sensory difficulties and fear of falling (FOF) are all common concerns in older people; however, knowledge about the combined effect of FOF and coexisting sensory difficulties on mobility is lacking. METHODS: Data on self-reported FOF, difficulties in hearing, vision, balance, and walking 2 km were gathered with a structured questionnaire among 434 women aged 63-76 years at baseline and after a 3-year follow-up. Logistic regression models were used for analyses. RESULTS: Every third participant reported difficulties in walking 2 km at baseline. In cross-sectional analysis, the odds ratio for difficulties in walking 2 km was higher amo…

Muscle hypertrophy, strength development, and serum hormones during strength training in elderly women with fibromyalgia.

2005

To examine the effects of strength training on maximal force, cross-sectional area (CSA), and electromyographic (EMG) activity of muscles and serum hormone concentrations in elderly females with fibromyalgia (FM).Twenty-six patients with FM were randomly assigned to a training (FMT; n = 13; mean age 60 years) or a control (FMC; n = 13; 59 years) group. FMT performed progressive strength training twice a week for 21 weeks. The measurements included maximal isometric and concentric leg extension forces, EMG activity of the vastus lateralis and medialis, CSA of the quadriceps femoris, and serum concentrations of testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth…

Serum alkaline phosphatase is elevated and inversely correlated with cognitive functions in subjective cognitive decline: results from the ReGAl 2.0 …

2020

Background: Alkaline phosphatase has been found on neuronal membranes and plasma alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity increases during brain injury and cerebrovascular diseases, suggesting that its levels may reflect the neuronal loss. It is known that ALP is higher in subjects affected by Alzheimer’s dementia and inversely correlated with cognitive functions. No study has investigated the relationship between ALP and cognitive functions in old-age subject with pre-clinical cognitive impairment. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with data gathered from the ReGAl 2.0 project (Rete Geriatrica Alzheimer-Geriatric Network on Alzheimer’s disease), a large Italian multicentric clinical-base…

Air pollution and airport apron workers: A neglected occupational setting in epidemiological research.

2020

Abstract Introduction Airport apron workers are occupationally exposed to jet exhaust and major concern is related to the exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) from aircrafts. To date, little attention has been given to occupational exposures to aircraft-related UFP, although aircraft engines have high emissions of ultrafine particles, which are orders of magnitude higher than residential exposure. UFP could possibly contribute to the development of cancer, heart disease, mental illness, and respiratory symptoms. In addition to particulate matter, apron workers are exposed to other polluting substances associated with vehicles, aircraft exhaust or direct fuel emissions. Methods We performed…

Helicobacter pylori Infection and Risk Factors in Relation to Allergy in Children

2017

Purpose To analyze presence of Helicobacter pylori infection and environmental risk factors among children with and without allergy. Methods Parents of children at primary health care centres/kindergartens and allergologist consultation were asked to answer a questionnaire and to bring a faecal sample. H. pylori infection was detected by monoclonal stool antigen test. Prevalence of H. pylori infection and risk factors were compared between individuals with and without allergy using χ2 test, ANOVA test and parameters and logistic regression. Results Among 220 children (mean age, 4.7 years; ±standard deviation 2.3 years) H. pylori positivity was non-significantly lower among patients with all…

Feasibility of the Allergy Questionnaire for Athletes (AQUA © ) in pediatric age

2018

A burden of respiratory and allergic symptoms up to almost 60% has been observed in young and adult athletes, influencing physical performances1 . The Allergy Questionnaire for Athletes (AQUA©) is a validated screening tool for the prediction of the atopic status in adult athletes2 ; it was recently tested in Belgian young elite athletes (12-14 years old)3 , but its actual feasibility and suitability for children and adolescent was not evaluated. Indeed, there is evidence that children are prone to employ "satisficing" response strategies, answering every question positively/negatively, or simply not answering4 . Therefore, the present cross-sectional survey was carried out to assess feasib…
