Size and subclasses of low-density lipoproteins in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

2012

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have proatherogenic dyslipidemia. We analyzed predictors of low-density lipoproteins' (LDLs) size in patients with OSA. In a cross-sectional study including 58 participants with OSA (30 without the metabolic syndrome [MetS] and 28 with MetS), we evaluated the size of LDL by gradient gel electrophoresis. Compared with patients without the MetS, those with MetS showed lower LDL size ( P = .007), due to a reduction in large LDL-I particles ( P = .002) and an increase in small, dense LDL-IIIA ( P = .048) and LDL-IIIB ( P = .037). The size of LDL correlated inversely with age ( r = −.268, P = .042) and serum triglycerides ( r = −.364, P = .005), and p…

Associated factors to psychiatric morbidity in postmenopausal phases.

1998

Abstract Background: The greatest risk of psychiatric morbidity during the climacteric years is linked to a greater exposure to stressful life experiences, women's dissatisfaction with their role in society and to an absence of social backup. The question to be posed now is the extent to which the longitudinal surveys can confirm, refute or complement the results of the cross-sectional analyses. Methods: A study involving population-based cohorts was carried out on a sample of 120 women who had been previously identified as being premenopausal or menopausal during a cross-sectional examination conducted between 1987 and 1988 within the city of Valencia (Spain). The aims were to analyze the …

Impact of the anatomical location, alcoholism and smoking on the prevalence of advanced oral cancer in Brazil

2018

Background To evaluate the prevalence of oral cancer in Brazil according to the clinical stage, anatomical location, alcoholism and smoking. Material and Methods Data referring to 31,217 cases of oral cancer, from 2000 to 2010, were obtained from the Integrator Module of the Hospital Registry of Cancer. Inconsistent data (“non-classified” cases) was eliminated and 21,160 cases were analyzed. The frequency distribution according to clinical stage, anatomical location, alcoholism and smoking was analyzed descriptively and through a binary logistic regression model (α<0.05). The clinical stage (dependent variable) was dichotomized in early stage (I and II) or advanced stage (III and IV). The y…

Associations between parenting and substance use, meal pattern and food choices: A cross-sectional survey of 13,269 Norwegian adolescents

2019

Identifying factors that affect adolescent lifestyle behaviors is essential in order to develop effective generic prevention approaches. This study aimed to investigate the association between parental monitoring, parental emotional support, parental-adolescent conflict and adolescent substance use, meal pattern and food choices. The study included data from 13,269 Norwegian adolescents aged 13–16 years collected in 2016. Multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for gender, age and parental education were applied. Results show that low parental monitoring was associated with increased substance use (Odds ratios (OR) ranging from 2.8; 95% Confidence intervals (CI) 2.1–3.6 to OR 3.8;…

2021

Background The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of localized intraoral neuropathic pain in a cluster of patients who reported the involvement of gingival site as only clinical manifestation of dysesthesia, analysing type and distribution of symptoms. Material and Methods Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were screened through laboratory test and a conventional oral examination with periodontal chart. A questionnaire to collect data on symptoms, oral site involved, quality of sleep, anxiety was submitted to all the patients. Results A total of 236 patients were recruited. Seventy-six patients (32.2%) presented generalized type, where…

Quality of life, work ability and oral health among patients with chronic liver diseases

2018

Background This study aimed to explore the associations between health-related quality of life and work ability with the oral health status of patients with chronic liver disease. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study included 150 patients with chronic liver disease, consecutively seen at University Hospital, Salvador, Brazil. Oral health was evaluated by the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index and by the presence of gingivitis and periodontitis. Salivary flow was “reduced” when <1.0 mL/min. Health-related quality of life was evaluated by using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36); work ability was evaluated by the Work Ability Index questionnaire. R…

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a public health emergency of international concern, which may have affected lifestyle habits and mental health. Based on national health profile assessments, this study investigated perceived changes of lifestyle habits in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and associations between perceived lifestyle changes and mental health in Swedish working adults. Among 5599 individuals (50% women, 46.3 years), the majority reported no change (sitting 77%, daily physical activity 71%, exercise 69%, diet 87%, alcohol 90%, and smoking 97%) due to the pandemic. Changes were more pronounced during the first wave (April–June) compared to the second (October–December). Women,…
