Religion and Social Integration ‘Crises’ in North Western Europe: Some Conclusions
2013
My investigation of religion-related social integration crises in four North West European societies in the period 2001–11 began with the English case and the riots in some Northern English cities of 2001. In concluding I shall start again with this case, bringing it together with the Dutch, French and Northern Irish evidence we have now considered, and with my findings across each of the dimensions examined (segregation, media, institutional forms of multiculturalism and secularism, far-right and post-liberal mobilisation and national cultural trauma). Since much attention has been given to factors which shape conflict and influence the construction of prejudice, and especially to the nega…
2016
What should be the right place for religions in France ? Our debates are old and sharp. France has two legislations : a concordat (Napoléon) for two departments and the common rule (1905). The word "Laîcité" was not employed at the beginning, but appears progressively. Do Muslims living in France are changing the concept ? Do they imply a new manner of seeing things ? What are the results of the attacks of 2015 and 2016 on the opinion ? We analyse in this communication for the universities of Bucharest and Craiova articles published in the newspaper Le Monde. What is the reflection about the concept of "laïcité", what are the traditional arguments and the new ones ?
Simulating Secularities: Challenges and Opportunities in the Computational Science of (Non)Religion
2021
This article provides scholars of nonreligion and secularism with an introduction to some of the major opportunities and challenges associated with the growing application of computational methods to the phenomena they study. It also illustrates these opportunities and challenges by describing several overlapping research projects and some of the models of (non)religion they have produced. Finally, the article addresses some of the significant philosophical issues surrounding the use of computer modeling and simulation, focusing on the ethical and epistemological concerns that these tools often raise. I invite scholars of nonreligion to consider adding these techniques to their methodologic…
Homeschooling, freedom of conscience, and the school as republican sanctuary: an analysis of arguments representing polar conceptions of the secular …
2016
This paper examines how stances and understandings pertaining to whether home education is civically legitimate within liberal democratic contexts can depend on how one conceives normative roles of the secular state and the religious neutrality that is commonly associated with it. For the purposes of this paper, home education is understood as a manifestation of an educational philosophy ideologically based on a given conception of the good. Two polar conceptions of secularism, republican and liberal-pluralist, are explored. Republican secularists declare that religious expressions do not belong in the public sphere and justify this exclusion by promoting religious neutrality as an end in i…
Faith- based diplomacy and cultural security: Between pluralism and particularism
2023
Two basic approaches to faith-based diplomacy (FBD) have developed over the last twenty years. For some, it is a synonym of supra-denominational conflict prevention and resolution, and for others, it is an element of the state’s foreign policy exploited to achieve not just cultural but also political goals. The purpose of the chapter is to present the interrelationships between FBD and cultural security in the context of the “return of religion” and the “post-secular turn”. The conducted analysis, which is theoretical in nature, contributes to the discussion on the role of the religious determinant, pointing to the existence of two fundamentally separate approaches to the application of rel…
Representations of individuals in discourses of laïcité from Le Monde : confirming or challenging the republican framework of identity?
2017
In recent decades, the notions of laïcité and identity have been subjects of controversy in France. The two concepts have become sufficiently co-associated since the 1990s to ensure each almost systematically entails the other. Findings from previous studies have pointed out harmful implications of this pervasive association for minorities in France, especially Muslims. This study examines further the ways laïcité and identity are interwoven by exploring who is represented (and how) in newspaper articles from Le Monde dealing with laïcité. Informed by critical intercultural communication scholarship, intersectionality, and a Foucaultian approach to discourse, this study pays particular atte…
