InCREDulity in Artificial Societies
2021
This paper describes an artificial society in which the simulated agents behave and interact based on a computational architecture informed by insights from one of the leading social psychological theories in the scientific study of secularization and religion: “credibility-enhancing displays” (or CREDs) theory. After introducing the key elements of the theory and outlining the computational architecture of our CRED model, we present some of our initial simulation results. These efforts are intended to advance the quest within social simulation for more authentic artificial societies and more plausible human-like agents with complex interactive and interpretative capacities.
The Cultivation of Conformity: Towards a General Theory of Internal Secularisation
2021
Sekularyzacja. Kilka uwag w perspektywie myśli J. Ratzingera - Benedykta XVI
2020
2021
The relation between state and Church is one of the main topics of Western political debate. In this essay I will stress that there is not a clear formula to face this topic. Therefore, it is necessary that Catholic philosophy and theology always reflect on the way this relation has to be thought as time goes by. More specifically, I will argue that the premise of liberal Catholicism, that is that a clear distinction between state and society exists, is today not more easily acceptable at all. This point is very important in order to reflect upon the relation between state and Church, political and religion, and public and private sfere in our age.
El orden público ante la libertad religiosa. Reflexiones sobre un debate
2020
Theorizing religion and media in contemporary societies: An account of religious ‘publicization’
2011
This article argues that a combination of the rapid development and dissemination of media technologies, the liberalization of national media economies and the growth of transnational media spheres is transforming the relationship between religion, popular culture and politics in contemporary societies in ways not adequately accounted for in existing sociological theories of religion (secularization, neo-secularization and rational choice) and still largely neglected in sociological theories of media and culture. In particular, it points to a series of media enabled social processes (de-differentiation, diasporic intensification and re-enchantment) which mirror and counter processes identif…
José Luis Aranguren. Religión pensada, religión vivida
2015
In Aranguren’s work the religious dimension is crucial, when he deals with it from the point of view of the “religious studies” and also when he deals with it from the ethical perspective. In the second case Aranguren speaks about an “ethics open to religion”. The article tries to show that in the second case there is an evolution in Aranguren’s thought with two stages. In the first one, religion appears as the satisfaction of human aspirations, rooted in an ethics which is grounded in metaphysics. In the second one God appears as a possible answer to questions open from the perspective of a hermeneutic- narrative ethics.En la obra de Aranguren la dimensión religiosa es crucial, cuando la t…
Rituales, descentramientos territoriales y niveles de identidad: La Semana Santa Marinera de Valencia
2011
The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the Semana Santa Marinera processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. Media coverage of the ritual means that new virtual communities with no fixed territorial base are created, and the complexity of this phenomenon …
Social Geographical Patterns in Membership of the Established Church in Denmark
2019
The Church of Denmark was established in 1849 and is regarded as a pillar of traditional national identity. This status is being challenged by a steady decline in membership in recent decades. The Capital area is especially prone to low membership rates, and this regional pattern remains when the analysis controls for income and education. Furthermore, the local membership rate is also related to affiliation to the neighbourhood. Our detailed analysis is based on public register data on the individual level combined with geographical mapping information. Denmark is thereby divided into micro-aggregated areas in order to locate varying church membership rates. While some local variation can …
Ciudadanía democrática: ética, política y religión. XIX Conferencias Aranguren
2011
This article is comprised of two parts, bound together by the concept of democratic citizenship. The first part attempts to design the lines of deliberative democracy as the most appropriate model to embody the actual substance of democracy. That is why it presents the sense of deliberative democracy, its traits, its advantages compared with other models, the conditions for its start-up, its limits and the specific type of deliberative democracy that would be more adequate, and which receives the name of «communicative democracy»; all of this by way of dialogues with its main representatives. The second part addresses the specific questions of the <i…
