Isolation and Characterization of Epidermal DNA and RNA from Guinea Pig Skin

1971

DNA and RNA were isolated from mammalian epidermis in a relatively small scale procedure. The high purity and native state of the DNA isolated is reflected by its molar absorptivity E (P), its thermal hyperchromicity and its hyperchromicity upon DNase treatment and by its sedimentation profile as well as by its profile in a cesium chloride density gradient. The very low content of protein and RNA, as well as the data of DNA determination, indicate that this method permits the isolation of a highly purified product. This is further substantiated by the determination of UV absorption spectra and by analysis of the base composition. The mammalian skin DNA showed the following properties: Mol. w…

Data for: Accumulation of metals and changes in the composition of freshwater lake organic sediments during the Holocene

2020

Distribution of metals in freshwater sediment strata formed during the Holocene in the territory of Latvia has been studied rather insufficiently. Considering the large volume of accumulated organic matter in sediments, studies of the content of metal elements in sediments can help to determine the peculiarities of metal accumulation process in limnic systems and biogeochemical cycling of metals. Lake Pilvelis, located in the eastern part of Latvia (the northern part of Europe), was selected as the study site. Lake Pilvelis is a small lake of a glacial origin, and more than 90% of its depression is filled with organic-rich sediments, such as gyttja or freshwater sapropel, with an average th…

Budgeting soil erosion from floodplain sediments of the central Rhenish Slate Mountains (Westerwald), Germany

2011

The distribution, thickness and composition of the floodplain sediments in the valleys of the Gelbach (Lower Westerwald) and Große Nister (Upper Westerwald) depend on the occurrence of loessic periglacial cover beds in their catchments as well as on historical land use. The budget of floodplain sedimentation was derived from a study of the floodloams underlying the monastery garden of Marienstatt, a village in the Große Nister valley. From the study of two occupation levels, pottery shards and radiocarbon dating, 55% of the floodloam can be attributed to the Modern period (younger than c. AD 1450). From the radiocarbon age of a charcoal fragment extracted from the base of the floodloam at …

Aeolian sedimentation in arid and semi-arid environments of Western Mongolia

2004

Research on aeolian sediments in Mongolia shows two main cycles of aeolian sedimentation: first the accumulation of major sand fields neighbouring the eastern bank of rivers and lakes, and second the distribution of loess-like sediments on the mountain slopes. The first is resulting from strong westerly winds, being more strength especially during the glacial periods. The latter is resulting in the erosion and accumulation of silt in this region in more humid periods in Interstadial stages and at the end of glacial periods. Both cycles are described on the case study area of the Uvs Nuur Basin in Western Mongolia.

Macrofaunal colonization of mine tailings impacted sediments

2020

An experiment was conducted to study and compare macrofaunal colonization of thin layers of mine tailings. Experimental boxes filled with marine sediments capped with mine tailings were placed on the seabed and subject to colonization for six and twelve months. Three Norwegian mine tailings, representative of major production processes, were used. In addition, one set of boxes served as control and was not treated with tailings. The layer thickness of the tailings was supposed to represent the thickness in the transition zone between the sea deposit itself and unaffected sediments. The most fine-grained tailings, which also contained flotation chemicals, showed a significantly lower coloniz…

Apparent discrepancy in contamination history of a sub-tropical estuary evaluated through 210Pb profile and chronostratigraphical markers.

2005

Abstract Zn and Cd concentrations, stable lead isotopes and 210 Pb-derived chronology were determined in a sediment core sampled at Sepetiba Bay (South-eastern Brazil). During the last decades, the bay’s watershed has been modified by the increase of industrial activities and human interventions. In particular, Zn and Cd ore treatment plants were built near the coast in 1960 and 1970, respectively, and water has been diverted from the adjacent Paraiba do Sul River watershed since 1950. The core collected at shallow depth near the industrial area exhibits four successive events: (i) at 50 cm depth, a change in the 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ratio from about 1.162 to more than 1.18 might be the result of…

Importance des variations latérales discrètes dans les apports détritiques, observées dans des faciès de rampe sédimentaire riches en matière organiq…

2017

17 pages; International audience; We studied a potential petroleum source rock deposited in a clastic-dominated ramp environment: the Argiles de Châtillon Formation (Kimmeridgian-Tithonian, Boulonnais area, northern France). The formation was deposited along a proximal-distal gradient on this ramp affected by synsedimentary fault movements. A sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical study was conducted to decipher the distribution patterns of sedimentary parameters along such a depth increase over the ramp. It comes out that smectite distribution unexpectedly mimics the lateral depth evolution despite the good floatability of the mineral. It is also observed that the Argiles de Châti…

C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) as inflammation markers in elderly patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmona…

2010

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) might represent a less expensive alternative to C-reactive protein (CRP) as a marker of systemic inflammation in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We tried to verify this hypothesis in 223 consecutive outpatients aged 65 years or more with stable COPD enrolled in a multicenter observational study. Patients were grouped according to normal/increased ESR/CRP values and groups were compared with regard to clinical and laboratory characteristics. Correlations between CRP, ESR and selected variables of interest were assessed by Spearman's ζ-test and multivariate linear regression analysis. CRP was weakly and inversely correlated with the fo…

Klebsiella oxitoca folliculitis mimicking tinea barbae in a diabetic man

2005

A 55-year-old male dairy farmer was admitted to our hospital with a skin infection on the neck and face. He was apparently in good general health, and his medical history was unremarkable. He reported that, 50 days before admission, a pruritic red maculopapular rash had developed on the anterior region of his neck. This rash failed to improve after a 10-day course of trimethoprim-sufamethoxazole and fluconazole; rather it progressively worsened. On admission, examination revealed confluent follicular papulae-pustules with purulent-hematic exudation and crusting, on an erythematous-edematous area extending over the anterior region of the neck, chin and mandible (Fig. 1); hairs within the aff…
