X-ray Powder Structure Determination and Thermal Behavior of a New Modification of Pb(II) Selenite

2002

The crystal structure of a new polymorphic form of lead(II) selenite (PbSeO3) was solved directly from conventional X-ray powder diffraction data. Direct methods and Rietveld refinement techniques were used for the structure determination. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (no. 14) with cell dimensions a = 9.1587(1) A, b = 8.0902(1) A, c = 8.7932(1) A, β = 103.032(1)°, and V = 634.76(2) A3. The final refinement gave background excluded Rp = 6.22%, Rwp = 8.81%, and RB = 2.16% by using 45 structural and 15 profile parameters with 10 atoms in an asymmetric unit. The three-dimensional structure consists of 9-coordinated lead atoms, which are linked by three bidentate…

On the use of front-end cascode rectifiers based on normally on SiC JFET and Si MOSFET

2014

The new wide band-gap semiconductor devices provide new properties to be explored. Normally on silicon carbide (SiC) JFET power devices have several advantages, in particular low switching losses and the potential capabilities of high temperature and high reverse blocking voltage. Looking for improving the overall efficiency in power converters, new structures based on these power devices might be studied. In this paper, a cascode rectifier based on normally on SiC JFET is presented and analyzed. This rectification structure can be applied as front-end rectifier stage for ac-dc power converters, increasing the overall efficiency of these topologies. A second cascode rectifier based on silic…

Selenium adsorption on Mo(110): A first-principles investigation

2013

Selenium adsorption on molybdenum surfaces is a relevant process in the production of thin-film solar cells, in particular as far as the formation of the layered compound MoSe${}_{2}$ is concerned. In this paper we investigate the energetics of Se adsorption on the (110) surface of molybdenum using first-principles calculations in the two limiting cases of low and high coverage, and we establish a comparison with the more extensively investigated case of sulfur adsorption at submonolayer coverage. The studied system provides the opportunity for testing the most crucial approximations, namely, the choice of the exchange-correlation functional and the pseudopotential generation. We find that …

Total content of As, Sb, Se, Te and Bi in Spanish vegetables, cereals and pulses and estimation of the contribution of these foods to the Mediterrane…

2010

Abstract As, Sb, Se, Te and Bi were quantified in vegetables, pulses and cereals, in order to increase the available information on the presence of these elements in the Mediterranean daily intake. Samples were dry ashed and the ashes dissolved with diluted HCl. Hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry was used for quantification. Limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.2 to 1.7 ng g−1 and the accuracy was assessed by the analysis of three certified reference materials, Rice Flour (NIST 1568a), Tomato Leaves (NIST 1573) and Cabbage (IAEA 359). Good concordance between results found and certified values were always observed. As, Sb, Se, Te and Bi levels varied in samples analysed …

Untargeted Metabolomics Investigation on Selenite Reduction to Elemental Selenium by Bacillus mycoides SeITE01

2021

Bacillus mycoides SeITE01 is an environmental isolate that transforms the oxyanion selenite (SeO32−) into the less bioavailable elemental selenium (Se0) forming biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Bio-SeNPs). In the present study, the reduction of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) by SeITE01 strain and the effect of SeO32− exposure on the bacterial cells was examined through untargeted metabolomics. A time-course approach was used to monitor both cell pellet and cell free spent medium (referred as intracellular and extracellular, respectively) metabolites in SeITE01 cells treated or not with SeO32−. The results show substantial biochemical changes in SeITE01 cells when exposed to SeO32−. The initial u…

Bioaccumulation of selenium-by fruit origin lactic acid bacteria in tropical fermented fruit juices

2021

Abstract Adequate fruit consumption helps to prevent several chronic age-related diseases. Selenium (Se) is an elemental micronutrient with antioxidant capacity. In general, fruits and Se ingest by humans are below the recommended daily intake value. Fresh fruits are highly susceptible to deterioration during storage. Fermentation can improve the storage period, sensory profile, and bioactive compound content of foods; moreover, some lactic acid bacteria can accumulate organic Se intracellularly. In this work, microbial growth and Se accumulation by Levilactobacillus brevis CRL2051 and Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL2034 in tropical fruit juices were evaluated. The strains could grow 1–2 log c…

Microfungal Alkylation and Volatilization of Selenium Adsorbed by Goethite

2009

Selenium adsorbed in the oxyanionic form by Fe-oxides like goethite is considered of benefit for long-term stabilization of (79)Se under near field conditions of radionuclide waste disposal sites. However, microbe-mediated volatilization of the uranium fission product (79)Se has not yet been considered for risk assessment based on the use of the water-solid distribution coefficient K(D). We have performed incubation experiments in a ternary system selenium-microbe-goethite and show that mycobiota including the common black microfungi genera Alternaria alternata are capable of volatilizing the Se even if immobilized by goethite. The microfungi were incubated in a standardized nutrient broth …

Two Novel Ternary Dicopper(II) μ-Guanazole Complexes with Aromatic Amines Strongly Activated by Quantum Dots for DNA Cleavage

2013

Two novel (μ-guanazole)-bridged binuclear copper(II) complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), [Cu2(μ-N2,N4-Hdatrz)(phen)2(H2O)(NO3)4] (1) and [Cu2(μ-N1,N2-datrz)2(μ-OH2)(bipy)2](ClO4)2 (2) (Hdatrz = 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole = guanazole), have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and susceptibility measurements. Compounds 1 and 2 differ in the aromatic amine, which acts as a coligand, and in the Cu···Cu'-bridging system. Compound 1, which contains two mono-bridged copper ions, represents the first example of a discrete Cu-(NCN-trz)-Cu' complex. Compound 2, with two triply bridged copper ions, is one of the few compounds featuring a…

Synthesis, molecular and electronic structures of a paramagnetic trimetallic cluster containing an unusual Mo3(μ3-Se)2(μ-Se)3 core

2014

Abstract The electron precise [Mo3(μ3-Se)(μ-Se)3(dppe)3Br3]+ incomplete cuboidal complex, with six cluster skeletal electrons (CSE), was converted into the paramagnetic bicapped [Mo3(μ3-Se)2(μ-Se)3(dppe)3]+ cluster (1+), with an unusual seven metal electron population, by treatment with elemental Ga. The cluster core consists of an almost equilateral Mo3 triangle (Mo–Mo distances are in the range 2.7583(7)–2.7748(7) A with an average value of 2.77(3) A), capped by two selenide ligands. The remaining selenium atoms bridge adjacent metal atoms, defining a virtually planar Mo3(μ-Se)3 unit, with the capping Se atoms positioned above and below this plane. The new complex possesses a doublet grou…
