Tetraurea calix[4]arenes with sulfur functions: synthesis, dimerization to capsules, and self-assembly on gold.
2007
Various calix[4]arene derivatives, fixed in the cone conformation by decylether groups and functionalized at their wide rim by urea residues, were synthesized. In two compounds (4f,g) sulfur functions were attached to the urea groups via different spacers in order to allow binding to metal surfaces. While they exist as single molecules in polar solvents, tetraurea calix[4]arenes of this type (4) combine to form dimeric capsules in aprotic, apolar solvents. A solvent molecule is usually included in such a capsule, if no guest with a higher affinity is present. In the presence of an equimolar amount of the tetratosylurea 5, the exclusive formation of heterodimers, consisting of one molecule o…
Anion template effect and the polymerization degree
2005
Two 2D (M1 and M2) and one 1D (M3) metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have been prepared from pyridine functionalized tetradentate ligand tetrakis(nicotinoxymethyl)methane TNM with silver tetrafluoroborate, nickel chloride, and copper hexafluorophosphate. M1 manifests a previously unpresented mode of 4,4 threefold parallel interpenetration for 2D MOFs. Large channels (vdW diameter 9.4 Å) through eclipsed 2D layers of M2 were observed. While the open space percentage in the noninterpenetrated M2 was 38.0 %, the triple interpenetration of the sheets of M1 reduced the void to 10.8 %. With the same ligand and a similar, weakly coordinating anion as that in M1, the structure M3 was rendered one‐dim…
Tuneable Emission of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Based Nanostructures that Self-Assemble in the Presence of Europium(III) Ions: Reversible t…
2020
[EN] Hybrid nanostructures with switchable and reversible "blue-red-green" emission were efficiently synthesized. These nanostructures comprise polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) that behave as a nanocage that can be functionalized with terpyridine-based organic ligands, which can be easily complexed with europium (III) ions. The complexes were characterized by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and their stoichiometry was also confirmed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. In the presence of the Eu(III) ions, the octafunctionalized nanocages self-assemble to form 3D architectures that display an intense red-emission, especially in the solid state. The presence of an alkenyl group bridging …
Self-assembly of Organic Molecules on Insulating Surfaces
2015
Molecular self-assembly is known to provide a powerful tool for creating functional structures, with the ultimate structure and functionality encoded in the molecular building blocks. Upon molecule deposition onto surfaces, functional structures have been created ranging from defect-free, highly symmetric two-dimensional layers to complex assemblies with dedicated functionality. Especially organic molecules play a key role for molecular self-assembly due to their impressive structural flexibility and the high degree of control by chemical synthesis. Furthermore, the surface itself provides another exciting dimension: adjusting the subtle balance between intermolecular and molecule-surface i…
Langmuir films and Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers incorporating mechanically-threaded molecules-pseudorotaxanes
1996
This paper describes the synthesis of a π-electron rich aromatic lipid containing a polyether thread intercepted by a 1,5-dioxynaphthalene moiety. The terminus of one end of the polyether is a methoxyl group and the other a glycerol unit linked via the 2-oxo position, while the 1,3-oxo functions are covalently attached to octadecyl chains. This compound, when cospread at the air-water interface with the tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), and the phospholipid, dimyristoylphosphatidic acid, as its monoanion, forms self-assembled pseudorotaxanes which are self-organized into a two-dimensional supramolecular array at the interface. The electrostatic interactions between t…
Synthesis and cation-exchange properties of a bis-zwitterionic lamellar hybrid material
2008
The synthesis of a bis-zwitterionic lamellar hybrid material containing ammonium carboxylate groups is described. Cation-exchange properties of this material towards transition metal and lanthanide ions were studied as well as the regeneration and reuse of the material.
Self-assembly scenarios of block copolymer stars
2011
We examine the self-organization scenarios of star-shaped AB-block copolymers, consisting of a solvophilic A-block and a solvophobic B-block, in which f such blocks are chemically anchored on a common centre on their A-parts, leaving the B-blocks exposed on their exterior. We employ a lattice model and we perform Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations for the case f = 6, varying thereby the percentage of attractive monomers as well as the concentration of stars. In agreement with previous studies on the low-functionality case f = 3 [F. Lo Verso, A.Z. Panagiotopoulos, and C.N. Likos, Phys. Rev. E 79, 010401(R) (2009)], we find that when the majority of monomers in the star are attractive, m…
Guided hierarchical co-assembly of soft patchy nanoparticles.
2013
Different polymers can be used in combination to produce coexisting nanoparticles of different symmetry and tailored to co-assemble into well-ordered binary and ternary hierarchical structures. There is considerable practical interest in developing the tools to fabricate multicomponent artificial systems that mimic the hierarchical ordering seen in the natural world — complex biomaterials can be assembled from the simple but precisely defined molecular building blocks. Andre Groschel and colleagues have developed a bottom-up approach that's a step in that direction. Previously they designed simple linear polymers that self-assemble in solution to produce monodisperse nanoparticles with well…
Incorporation of the bacterial reaction centre into dendrimersomes
2012
For the first time the ability of the first generation dendrimer belonging to the family of polyester-benzylether, (3,5)12G1-PE-BMPA-(OH)4, to form dendrimersomes is presented together with their capability to reconstitute the integral membrane protein complex called Reaction Centre (RC) purified from the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Size, polydispersity and time stability of the empty and protein containing dendrimersomes are presented together with the photochemical activity of the guest protein. The RC presence appears to strongly enhance the self-assembly properties of the Janus dendrimer, leading to the formation of proteo-dendrimersomes showing a photochemical act…
Luminescent supramolecular heterometallic macrocycles and their encapsulation on cholate gels
2018
The metal complex formed by coordination of Zn(II) to 1,7-bis(4-methylpyridine)-4-(2- naphthylmethyl)-1,4,7-triazaheptane (ZnL2+) was reacted in aqueous solution with [Pd(NO3)2(en)] and [Pt(NO3)2(en)] salts to form the self-assembled heterometallic macrocycles [Zn2L2Pd2(en)2]8+ and [Zn2L2Pt2(en)2]8+, respectively. Pd(II) and Pt(II)- coordination modulates the original emission of ZnL2+ arising from the presence of the naphthalene chromophore and the formation of the macrocycles can be monitored due to the PET process occurring with coordination of Pd(II) and Pt(II) to the pyridine units of ZnL2+. Additionally, several studies reveal that these heteromacrocycles can be encapsulated in Zn(II)…
