Patient and mentor language style matching as a predictor of working alliance, engagement with treatment as usual, and eating disorders symptoms over…
2022
Objective The aim of this study was to examine the processes involved in a guided self-help (GSH) pre-treatment intervention (RecoveryMANTRA) for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), by measuring the levels of patient/mentor Language Style Matching (LSM). RecoveryMANTRA was supported by student mentors or peer mentors (recovered individuals) over six weekly chat-based sessions. We examined whether LSM during RecoveryMANTRA predicted patients'working alliance with the clinic therapist, motivation, eating disorder (ED) and general psychopathology. A further aim was to examine differences in LSM between student mentors and peer mentors. Method 87 AN adults received RecoveryMANTRA plus treatmen…
Working on the "dark place" of southern European metropolitan cities. An analysis of informal practices and critique on approaches of public housing …
2018
The debate on housing practices of self-help mainly focalizes on Southern countries of the world, while in the Northern countries informal practices are still marginal or neglected compared to their proactive roles that could play in reframing public policies. Although this phenomenon has been recently re-evaluated in Europe, especially as antagonism between legality and illegality and rights, the housing practices of self-help could be a promising approach to solve housing deprivation in many metropolitan cities where the gap of income between rich and poor is keener. However, in Italy and in other European countries, squatters are illegal persons and therefore it becomes more complicated …
Telepsychology and Self-help: The Treatment of Fear of Public Speaking
2007
Abstract This work presents a self-help, Internet-based telepsychology program for the treatment of public speaking fears. The system is comprised of 3 parts: The assessment protocol gives the patient information about his or her problem (i.e., amount of interference it creates in his or her life, severity, degree of fear and avoidance). The system also includes a structured treatment protocol, organized into separate blocks, reflecting the patient’s progress. This ensures that the patient does not skip any steps in the treatment (something quite common in traditional self-help manuals), which provides more control over the process. The treatment protocol is a cognitive-behavioral program t…

Ecrire pour reconquérir son corps
2021
A randomized controlled trial of unguided internet cognitive-behavioral treatment for perfectionism in individuals who engage in regular exercise
2018
Objective Clinical perfectionism has been found to be a risk and maintaining factor in eating disorders (EDs), compulsive exercise, and athlete burnout. This study investigated whether an unguided internet cognitive–behavioral treatment (ICBT) for perfectionism would reduce ED pathology, compulsive exercise, and burnout in individuals who engage in regular exercise. Method Participants were randomly allocated to intervention (n = 38) or waitlist control (n =29). A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) analysis was conducted pre and post treatment. A follow‐up analysis was conducted with the intervention group at 3 and 6 months. Results The intervention group experienced a significant reduct…
Kiitollisuuden harjoittaminen itsehoitomenetelmänä : 28 runoa kiitollisuuden voimasta
2015
Lenita Lehtonen (2015). Kiitollisuuden harjoittaminen itsehoitomenetelmänä. 28 runoa kiitollisuuden voimasta. Terveystieteiden laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, terveyskasvatuksen pro gradu -tutkielma, 80 s., 2 liitettä. Kiitollisuusharjoitusten on havaittu useissa kokeellisissa tutkimuksissa vaikuttavan myönteisesti hyvinvointiin.
Illness Narrative and Self-Help Culture – Self-Help Writing on Age-Related Infertility
2014
Both self-help books and illness narratives are motivated by an impulse to overcome a crisis and, simultaneously, to help others who suffer from similar conditions. In doing so, authors of self-help and illness narratives move in between polar opposites: they have both individual and collective motives, they have a desire to overcome uncertainty and achieve control and they negotiate the authority of experience versus the authority of expertise. This paper has two objectives: (1) It describes the intersections of illness life writing and self-help culture and traces the thematic, cultural and historical similarities. (2) It analyzes a selection of four autobiographical, U.S.-American self-h…
Task-sharing interventions for patients with anorexia nervosa or their carers: a systematic evaluation of the literature and meta-analysis of outcome…
2019
The eating disorder clinical and scientific community advocates for the use of a shared approach to healthcare that actively involves patients and carers. A systematic review of the literature on guided self-help or self-help in anorexia nervosa (targeting either the individual affected by the illness or their carers) and meta-analyses of studies using randomised controlled designs for the evaluation of the outcomes: (1) drop-out from end-of-treatment assessment, (2) body mass index (BMI), (3) anxiety, (4) depression and (5) quality of life, were undertaken. Guided self-help was directed to patients in 15 studies and to carers in seven studies. The interventions were based on a variety of t…

Abstract Background Online self-help interventions have proven to be effective in treating various specific mental disorders, mainly depression and anxiety. Knowledge regarding their acceptance, efficacy, and usefulness in addition to inpatient or outpatient psychotherapy is limited. Therefore, we plan to evaluate an affect-focused, transdiagnostic, psychodynamic online self-help intervention following inpatient psychotherapy for mixed diagnoses in a feasibility study to determine acceptance, satisfaction, and preliminary estimates of efficacy. Methods The intervention is based on the book "Living Like You Mean It" by Ronald J. Frederick (2009) and the Swedish adaption by Johansson and coll…
