Pragmatic markers in contrast: The case of well
2008
Well is the most frequently analysed discourse marker. However, its meaning still remains elusive. The question explored in this paper is to what extent a contrastive analysis of a pragmatic marker can help identify its meaning and functions. The answer to this question is supported by an analysis of the occurrences of well in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their functional equivalents in the Catalan and Spanish dubbed versions. The analysis provides evidence that pragmatic markers such as well exhibit differences in meaning when compared with logical markers such as but. Their meaning is fully pragmatic since it does not refer properly to a propositional content but to structural…
Conceptions of happiness and its relationship with subjective well-being: A study through Natural Semantic Networks
2018
An Approach to Enhance Chatbot Semantic Power and Maintainability: Experiences within the FRASI Project
2012
The paper illustrates the implementation and semantic enhancement of a domain-oriented Question-Answering system based on a pattern-matching chat bot technology, developed within an industrial project, named FRASI. The main difficulty in building a KB for a chat bot is to handwrite all possible question-answer pairs that constitute the KB. The proposed approach simplifies the chat bot realization thanks to two solutions. The first one uses an ontology, which is exploited in a twofold manner: to construct dynamic answers as a result of an inference process about the domain, and to automatically populate, off-line, the chat bot KB with sentences that can be derived from the ontology, describi…
HyperShell: An expert system shell in a hypermedia environment—application in medical audiology
1990
HyperShell is an expert system shell developed in a hypermedia environment. Several artificial intelligence techniques such as frames and semantic networks are used in an original interpretation to enhance the interaction between the user and the program. The typical navigation tools of hypermedia such as clickable buttons and text search are extended to the semantic structure of HyperShell, creating a set of new tools. Examples from a medical expert system (Audex HM) developed in HyperShell are described.
Graph-based exploration and clustering analysis of semantic spaces
2019
Abstract The goal of this study is to demonstrate how network science and graph theory tools and concepts can be effectively used for exploring and comparing semantic spaces of word embeddings and lexical databases. Specifically, we construct semantic networks based on word2vec representation of words, which is “learnt” from large text corpora (Google news, Amazon reviews), and “human built” word networks derived from the well-known lexical databases: WordNet and Moby Thesaurus. We compare “global” (e.g., degrees, distances, clustering coefficients) and “local” (e.g., most central nodes and community-type dense clusters) characteristics of considered networks. Our observations suggest that …
Conceptual Ontological Object Knowledge Base and Language
2008
This paper deals with AI in aspect of knowledge acquisition and ontology base structure. The core of the system was designed in an object model to optimize it for further processing. Direct concept linking was used to assure fast semantic network processing. Predefined attributes used in the core minimize the number of basic connections within the ontology and help in inference. The system is assumed to generate questions and to specify the knowledge. The AI system defined in this way opens a possibility for better understanding of such basic human mind mechanisms as learning or analyzing.
Individuals’ Use of E-Mail Communication Genres in Open Source Software Community Building
2011
The advent of the participative Internet (Web 2.0) sheds a new light on traditional knowledge about communication practices. The role of information and communication technologies seems to be very central in managerial literature, while the human side of the issue is less considered. This paper argues that individuals establish communication genres as semantic templates for accomplishing their communicative projects. Communication genres are codes of default behavioral expectations resulting from recurrent communication actions over the time. By using semantic network analytical techniques, our argument is explored in a particular empirical setting, that is, a virtual community of open sour…
Reversive constructions in Latin: the case of re- (and dis-)
2019
This paper proposes a cognitive account on re- and dis- verbs based on the scrutiny of the Plautine corpus and Cato’s De agricultura. Re- and dis- exhibit significant differences as to the manner in which they come to a reversive function, and these differences can be traced back to the basic conceptual import of the two prefixes: while dis- is schematically connected with the idea of separation into two parts, re- basically refers to a rearward/reditive trajectory, connecting a point that has already been reached to the starting point. On the basis of this description, I analyze the semantic network of re- and dis- and the role of their conceptual structure in the spread from spatial to re…
Xarxes semàntiques en el lèxic disponible de València. Una aproximació al lexicó bilingüe
2016
This work deals with the situation of languages in contact and explores the nature of bilingual lexicon by studying lexical availability. Based on the results published in 2010 in Lèxic disponible de València, and in relation to 'town' as the center of interest, the study applied a new analytical tool called DispoGrafo, which enabled us to observe issues related to the construction and organization of the mental lexicon, for example, the incidence or profitability of facilitating semantic-priming-in clusters made up of three or more closely linked elements. The sample was obtained from 464 high school students of 2nd baccalaureate in the Valencia province, and was established to represent t…
Beyond the word and image: III. Neurodynamic properties of the semantic network
2019
AbstractUnderstanding the neural process underlying the comprehension of visual images and sentences remains a major open challenge in cognitive neuroscience. We previously demonstrated with fMRI and DTI that comprehension of visual images and sentences describing human activities recruits a common semantic system. The current research tests the hypothesis that this common semantic system will display similar neural dynamics during processing in these two modalities. To investigate these neural dynamics we recorded EEG from naïve subjects as they saw simple narratives made up of a first visual image depicting a human event, followed by a second that was either a sequentially coherent narrat…
