HyperShell: An expert system shell in a hypermedia environment—application in medical audiology

1990

HyperShell is an expert system shell developed in a hypermedia environment. Several artificial intelligence techniques such as frames and semantic networks are used in an original interpretation to enhance the interaction between the user and the program. The typical navigation tools of hypermedia such as clickable buttons and text search are extended to the semantic structure of HyperShell, creating a set of new tools. Examples from a medical expert system (Audex HM) developed in HyperShell are described.

Case assignment, case concord, and quantificational case constructions

2011

Abstract This paper examines a controversial and particularly complex case phenomenon called quantificational case attested in a number of historically unrelated Slavonic and Finno-Ugric languages, and attempts to establish certain novel cross-linguistic generalizations and conclusions. In particular, it will be argued that (i) instead of standard one-to-one case assignment, in which one case assigner is case-related to one case assignee, a many-to-many case flow is attested; (ii) nominal case is not a privilege of full DPs, arguments or thematic roles; (iii) case reflects either local or nonlocal functional structure, whether in the verbal or nominal domain; and that (iv) there is no disti…

The influence of task-irrelevant music on language processing: syntactic and semantic structures.

2011

Recent research has suggested that music and language processing share neural resources, leading to new hypotheses about interference in the simultaneous processing of these two structures. The present study investigated the effect of a musical chord's tonal function on syntactic processing (Experiment 1) and semantic processing (Experiment 2) using a cross-modal paradigm and controlling for acoustic differences. Participants read sentences and performed a lexical decision task on the last word, which was, syntactically or semantically, expected or unexpected. The simultaneously presented (task-irrelevant) musical sequences ended on either an expected tonic or a less-expected subdominant ch…

Interpretation, Truth and Correspondence

2000

The correspondence theory of truth is usually considered unsuitable for qualitative research. This is because of the interpretive nature of social reality and subjective nature of research procedures. Contra these ideas it is argued that the correspondence theory of truth is presupposed in the practice of qualitative research. This theory does not, however, dictate any methods for verifying the interpretations. Various theories of truth are seen as necessary because of the complexity of the interpretation process.

Introduction of a spatial layer in the Semantic Web framework : a proposition through the Web platform ArchaeoKM

2011

Spatial technology has gained momentum under database systems. More specifically, the spatial operations and spatial functions are used to carry out spatial analysis which can be executed through these database systems. In addition, there has been significant amount of research in the field of the geospatial ontology domain in order to achieve the semantic interoperability between different data sources. Although, data interoperability is one of the main objectives of the Semantic Web technologies, the potentiality of the underlying knowledge tools and techniques have not been completely identified. With the growing influence of the Semantic Web technologies towards the application based on…

Knowledge-based modelling applied to synucleinopathies

2015

International audience; The adoption of telemedicine technologies has enabled collaborative programs involving a variety of links among distributed medical structures and health officials and professionals. The use for telemedicine for transmission of medical data and the possibility for several distant physicians to share their knowledge on given medical cases provides clear benefits, but also raises several unsolved conceptual and technical challenges. The seamless exchange and access of medical information between medical structures, health professionals, and patients is a prerequisite for the harmonious development of this new medical practice. This paper proposes a new approach of sema…

Modulation in alpha band activity reflects syntax composition: an MEG study of minimal syntactic binding

2021

Successful sentence comprehension requires the binding, or composition, of multiple words into larger structures to establish meaning. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated the neural mechanisms involved in binding of language at the level of syntax, in a task in which contributions from semantics were minimized. Participants were auditorily presented with minimal sentences that required binding (pronoun and pseudo-verb with the corresponding morphological inflection; "she grushes") and wordlists that did not require binding (two pseudo-verbs; "cugged grushes"). Relative to the no binding wordlist condition, we found that syntactic binding in a minimal sentence structure was a…
