Unaccusativity

2012

Abstract My research is an attempt at suggesting a cross-linguistically valid definition of verbs characterized by unagentivity and affectedness such as “burn”, “die”, “sink”, “fall”, “slide”, etc., which according to the present analysis constitute the semantic core of unaccusativity. Both synchronic and diachronic approaches are followed. Various definitions have been attributed to these verbs (eventives, anticausatives, transformatives, inchoatives, decausatives). Although Perlmutter & Postal (1984) classify unaccusative verbs on the basis of their syntactic behavior, they also argue that the syntactic expression of arguments is always determinable on the basis of the meaning of the verb…

Entre la sintaxis y el discurso: el caso de 'a lo mejor' y 'al menos' en la conversación coloquial

2018

This paper studies the Spanish forms a lo mejor (maybe) and al menos (at least) from a modular perspective, revisiting the categorization of a lo major and al menos according to the involved linguistic level and analyzing the relations between the adverbial uses of these forms and the discursive ones. Such relations show that the forms a lo mejor and al menos can be considered bicategorial lexical items, what is implemented by a corpus study based on data from spoken language.

Semantic Macro-Structural Analysis of the Latin American Digital Press Discourse on the Attacks of September 11th

2006

The topic of the essay is the complex p…

Semantic publishing as a tool in smart, self-protective critical infrastructure

2016

Semantic publishing as a semantic representation of publications makes articles machine-readable. It involves linking an article with another articles and external sources. Also, data provided along with the publication can be made machine-readable, which allows visualizing the data in different ways according to a reader’s needs. This kind of semantic technology deployed on physics domain can serve for improving interoperability in critical infrastructure as far as it includes such facilities as atomic power stations, atomic plants and local experimental atomic devices, experimental fusion reactors and demonstration fusion reactors among others. Having shared terminology and data represent…

Psychobiosocial Experiences in Sport : Development and Initial Validation of a Semantic Differential Scale

2021

Abstract Objectives To develop and validate the Psychobiosocial Experience Semantic Differential scale in sport (PESD-Sport), a new measure to assess discrete emotions and performance-related experiences in sport as conceptualized within the individual zones of optimal functioning (IZOF; Hanin, 2000, 2007, 2010) framework. Method In Study 1, we developed a preliminary 53-item version of the scale using a semantic differential format in the construction of the items pertaining to 12 psychobiosocial modalities. We chose this format to attain a clear representation of psychobiosocial states between opposites along perceived performance functionality (i.e., functional, dysfunctional). The preli…

Modeling user preferences in content-based image retrieval: A novel attempt to bridge the semantic gap

2015

This paper is concerned with content-based image retrieval from a stochastic point of view. The semantic gap problem is addressed in two ways. First, a dimensional reduction is applied using the (pre-calculated) distances among images. The dimension of the reduced vector is the number of preferences that we allow the user to choose from, in this case, three levels. Second, the conditional probability distribution of the random user preference, given this reduced feature vector, is modeled using a proportional odds model. A new model is fitted at each iteration. The score used to rank the image database is based on the estimated probability function of the random preference. Additionally, so…

Exploiting Semantic Trajectories Using HMMs and BIM for Worker Safety in Dynamic Environments

2020

International audience; Understanding dynamic behaviors of moving objects using positioning technologies for construction safety monitoring is still an open research issue. One task; that is a small subset in the widespread field of objects dynamics is the enrichment of the location data of users with the semantic information for studying their mobility patterns in the context of the environment. However, incorporating the semantics related to the environment gets complex in case of the dynamic construction sites where the site spaces are kept evolving with time. For instance, new walls and infrastructure supports are added often on sites, while others are detached. Similar situations open …

Experimental BIM applications in Archaeology: a work-flow

2014

In the last few decades various conceptual models, methods and techniques have been studied to allow 3D digital access to Cultural Heritage (CH). Among these is BIM (Building Information Modeling): originally built up for construction projects, it has been already experimented in the CH domain, but not enough in the archaeological field. This paper illustrates a framework to create 3D archaeological models integrated with databases using BIM. The models implemented are queryable by the connection with a Relational Database Management System and sharable on the web. Parametric solid and semantic models are integrated with 3D standardized database models that are finally manageable in the pub…

Context Comparison for Object Fusion

2003

We propose a solution to help the integration of heterogeneous sources based on the fusion of objects according to their context. New requirements for information exchange have emerged with all the developments around Internet. Information consumers want to access and combine data from remote and heterogeneous sources in a transparent and dynamic way. To achieve this level of interoperation is yet a real challenge. We present a model to define local data as informative objects with a contextual representation associated to them. A semantic context comparison mechanism, based on a semantic distance, reconciles context of applications and constructs virtual objects in which rules make the fus…
