Anomaly-based online intrusion detection system as a sensor for cyber security situational awareness system
2016
Almost all the organisations and even individuals rely on complex structures of data networks and networked computer systems. That complex data ensemble, the cyber domain, provides great opportunities, but at the same time it offers many possible attack vectors that can be abused for cyber vandalism, cyber crime, cyber espionage or cyber terrorism. Those threats produce requirements for cyber security situational awareness and intrusion detection capability. This dissertation concentrates on research and development of anomaly-based network intrusion detection system as a sensor for a situational awareness system. In this dissertation, several models of intrusion detection systems are devel…

Rinnakkaistallennuksen edistämisen keinoja yliopistokirjastoissa
2022
Julkaisujen rinnakkaistallennus on yksi tärkeä keino tieteellisen tiedon tuomisessa kaikkien kiinnostuneiden ulottuville. Rinnakkaistallennukseen on Suomessa viime vuosina panostettu yhä enemmän. Tässä artikkelissa kuvataan erilaisia keinoja, joilla rinnakkaistallenteiden määrää on lisätty kirjoittajien edustamissa yliopistokirjastoissa. nonPeerReviewed
Providing insights into browntail moth local outbreaks by combining life table data and semi-parametric statistics
2011
1. Life table studies have been an essential tool for the comprehension of insect population dynamics, although their use has been methodologically biased by a primary focus on mortality factors, especially natural enemies. Thus, studies in natural populations may relegate important mortality sources to the ‘unknown’ or ‘residual’ mortality categories. To overcome this limitation, life tables may be complemented by combining them with other approaches. 2. The aim of the present study was to provide insights into browntail moth Euproctis chrysorrhoea L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) local outbreaks by combining life table data and statistical modelling. First, E. chrysorrhoea population densit…
Influences of geographic differentiation in the forewing warning signal of the wood tiger moth in Alaska
2014
Aposematic organisms have warning signals advertising their unpalatability to predators, and because signal efficiency is better in higher densities, positive frequency-dependent selection is expected to select against less common signals. The wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis) occurs across the Holarctic and its conspicuous hindwings serve as warning signals to predators. It also has conspicuous black and white forewing patterns that could act as warning signals, or help to hide the moth by preventing predators from seeing the outline of the moth’s body (a strategy known as disruptive coloration). In Alaska, the predominant forewing pattern changes distinctly between the regions aroun…
Frequency-dependent flight activity in the colour polymorphic wood tiger moth
2015
Abstract Predators efficiently learn to avoid one type of warning signal rather than several, making colour polymorphisms unexpected. Aposematic wood tiger moth males Parasemia plantaginis have either white or yellow hindwing coloration across Europe. Previous studies indicate that yellow males are better defended from predators, while white males have a positively frequency-dependent mating advantage. However, the potential frequency-dependent behavioural differences in flight between the morphs, as well as the role of male-male interactions in inducing flying activity, have not been previously considered. We ran an outdoor cage experiment where proportions of both male morphs were manipul…

Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) in the synthesis of 3D CdS superstructures by diffusion assisted hydrothermal method
2015
Abstract In this study, the synthesis of cadmium sulfide (CdS) microstructures by gas diffusion assisted hydrothermal method using phosphotungstic acid (PTA) is reported. The as-synthesized products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of PTA dose, thioacetamide amount, time and temperature on the morphology of obtained particles have been studied. In this process, PTA ion host stabilizes the CdS particles against aggregation and thioacetamide plays two roles, being at the same time a sulfur source and a capping ligand. Based on the performed analyses it seems that the thioacetamide is mor…
Improved calculations of beta decay backgrounds to new physics in liquid xenon detectors
2020
We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state $\beta$ decays of $^{214}$Pb, $^{212}$Pb, and $^{85}$Kr most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. The effects of nuclear structure on the spectral shapes are taken into account using large-scale shell model calculations. Final spectra also include atomic screening and exchange effects. The impact of nuclear structure effects on the $^{214}$Pb and $^{212}$Pb spectra below $\approx100$ keV, pertinent for several searches for new physics, are found to be comparatively larger than those from the atomic effects alone. We find that the full calculatio…
