Existence and classification of critical points for nondifferentiable functions

2004

A general min-max principle established by Ghoussoub is extended to the case of functionals which are the sum of a locally Lipschitz continuous term and of a convex, proper, lower semicontinuous function. Some topological properties of the min-max-generated critical points in such a framework are then pointed out.

Discourse Matters : Localness as a Source of Authenticity in Craft Businesses in Peripheral Minority Language Sites

2015

Localness’ has gained currency as a source of authenticity and distinction in the niche marketing of the globalised new economy. This has created opportunities for peripheral minority language sites to capitalise on their geographically and culturally peripheral location, and has lifted tourism and handicraft industries to key sites of socio-economic development in these regions. Although ‘localness’ may seem like a ready source of economic gain in cultural production in such sites, it does not come without consequences for the cultural entrepreneurs. This paper explores what is at stake for cultural entrepreneurs in the promotion of localness as a source of authenticity. The study focuses …

Generalized frame operator, lower semiframes, and sequences of translates

2023

Given an arbitrary sequence of elements $\xi =\lbrace \xi _n\rbrace _{n\in \mathbb {N}}$ of a Hilbert space $(\mathcal {H},\langle \cdot ,\cdot \rangle )$, the operator $T_\xi$ is defined as the operator associated to the sesquilinear form $\Omega _\xi (f,g)=\sum _{n\in \mathbb {N}} \langle f , \xi _n\rangle \langle \xi _n , g\rangle$, for $f,g\in \lbrace h\in \mathcal {H}: \sum _{n\in \mathbb {N}}|\langle h , \xi _n\rangle |<^>2<\infty \rbrace$. This operator is in general different from the classical frame operator but possesses some remarkable properties. For instance, $T_\xi$ is always self-adjoint with regard to a particular space, unconditionally defined, and, when xi is a lo…

Il mito della vera storia. Giuliano secondo Ignazio Buttitta

2020

The myth of the bandit Giuliano – the outcome and symbol of a mafia culture and of a political…

Automatic Processing of Changes in Facial Emotions in Dysphoria: A Magnetoencephalography Study

2018

It is not known to what extent the automatic encoding and change detection of peripherally presented facial emotion is altered in dysphoria. The negative bias in automatic face processing in particular has rarely been studied. We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to record automatic brain responses to happy and sad faces in dysphoric (Beck’s Depression Inventory ≥ 13) and control participants. Stimuli were presented in a passive oddball condition, which allowed potential negative bias in dysphoria at different stages of face processing (M100, M170, and M300) and alterations of change detection (visual mismatch negativity, vMMN) to be investigated. The magnetic counterpart of the vMMN was el…

Top-Down Predictions of Familiarity and Congruency in Audio-Visual Speech Perception at Neural Level

2019

During speech perception, listeners rely on multimodal input and make use of both auditory and visual information. When presented with speech, for example syllables, the differences in brain responses to distinct stimuli are not, however, caused merely by the acoustic or visual features of the stimuli. The congruency of the auditory and visual information and the familiarity of a syllable, that is, whether it appears in the listener's native language or not, also modulates brain responses. We investigated how the congruency and familiarity of the presented stimuli affect brain responses to audio-visual (AV) speech in 12 adult Finnish native speakers and 12 adult Chinese native speakers. The…

Yhteiskunnallisen mainonnan merkitykset osana postmodernia kulutuskulttuuria

2008

Forme e sostanze del make-up green

2022

The paper examines the semiotic articulation of naturality through a structural analysis of green make-up packaging. The relations this universe establishes with its opposite, that of “traditional” make-up, find manifestation in the way the three visual strategies implemented by make-up brands and identified through the analysis enhance continuity or discontinuity with respect to this figurative universe. An attempt will be made to show the complex discursive construction of nature through often heteroclite discourses within which differentiated isotopes can be found. Still, besides being brand choices that differentially articulate the theme of nature from an aesthetic point of view, each …

Alterations of panoramic radiomorphometric indices in children and adolescents with beta-thalassemia major: A fractal analysis study

2021

Background Beta-thalassemia major is an inherited disorder that can cause bone deformity and loss of bone mineral density. The objective of this study is to evaluate the cortical and trabecular mandibular bone morphology of children and adolescents who have beta-thalassemia major (ß-TM) using a fractal dimension (FD) analysis and different panoramic radiomorphometric indices with digital panoramic radiographic images (DPRIs). Material and Methods The study included 80 patients (with 40 patients each of ß-TM and control). The mandibular cortical width (MCW), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical index (MCI), and simple visual estimation (SVE) were evaluated, and an FD analysi…
