Semiclassical Methods for the Description of Large Metal Clusters
1996
One of the most fascinating aspects of clusters is that they can be made arbitrarily large and therefore provide links between the microscopic and the macroscopic world. It is challenging to study how their physical properties change when going from atoms and small molecules to the bulk limit of condensed matter. But also the models and mathematical tools themselves, which are used in order to tackle the many-body problem, are an object of study for the theoretician. In particular, the question of how far quantum-mechanics must be carried with increasing size and where classical pictures become appropriate is of great interest. In this spirit, we discuss here some semiclassical methods for …

Public Reason and the Limits of Liberal Anti-Racism in Latvia
2011
My paper is a critical analysis of anti-racist and tolerance promotion initiatives in Latvia. First, I trace the historical and geopolitical conditions that enable the emergence of two discursive positions that are central to arguments about racism - that of liberally inclined tolerance activists and that of Latvians with politically objectionable nationalist sensibilities. Subsequently, I argue that, plagued by developmentalist thinking, anti-racist and tolerance promotion initiatives fail in their analysis of contemporary racism. They posit backward attitudes as the main hindrance to the eradication of racism and displace racism as a constitutive feature of modern political forms onto ind…
Design and implementation of an augmented reality application for rock art visualization in Cova dels Cavalls (Spain)
2019
[EN] Prehistoric rock art paintings, specifically rock-shelters exposed to environmental and anthropogenic factors, are usually faint and severely damaged, being them difficult to identify and understand by visitors. Augmented Reality (AR) supplements reality with virtual information superimposed onto the real world. This sensor-based technology in smartphones/tablets can improve the paintings experience displaying the 2D digital tracings overlapped onto the real scene (rock with faint paintings). This paper presents an AR application (app) developed in Cova dels Cavalls that shows a recreation of a possible original composition full of motifs with descriptive information to improve current…
La città delle terme e il mare. Progetti di bordo per Sciacca
2010
Kindergarten children's argumentation in reflection symmetry: The role of semiotic means
2017
International audience; In this paper I investigate the characteristics of children's argumentation when they work with reflection symmetry. Using Toulmin's (2003) model for substantial argumentation, I illuminate structural aspects of the ongoing argumentation. In addition, I analyse the children's argumentation with respect to their use of semiotic means. Results show that children are able to argue for a claim in a quite complex manner. The study also illustrates the extensive use of semiotic means in children's argumentation. In every element in the argumentative structure, children use gestures and other semiotic means to mediate their ideas. It is actually impossible to make sense of …
Un dilettantismo felice: ricostruzione testuale di Tvergastein
2023
For the past few years - few compared to the long historical duration of the human species on Earth - we have been witnessing a profound cultural revolution, perhaps even an anthropological one. Cultural because, after all, this revolution concerns first and foremost knowledge - and before that, belief, and after that, everyday life, human and social experience, and widespread sensitivity. Anthropological because this knowledge is essentially ethnological, of an ethnology that, however, denies itself in order to embrace the totality of things, or, better, to allow itself a holistic look that is not only aimed at homo, in order to attribute to itself an object of study, a much broader field …
MBE growth and properties of low-density InAs/GaAs quantum dot structures.
2011
We present the results of a comprehensive study carried out on morphological, structural and optical properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dot structures grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy. InAs quantum dots were deposited at low growth rate and high growth temperature and were capped with InGaAs upper confining layers. Owing to these particular design and growth parameters, quantum dot densities are in the order of 4-5x109 cm-2 with emission wavelengths ranging from 1.20 to 1.33 µm at 10 K, features that make these structures interesting for single-photon operation at telecom wavelength. High resolution structural techniques show that In content and composition profiles in the structures depend on …
