Imagery and Religious Conversion. The Symbolic Function of Jonah 1:13
2018
Jonah 1:13 has a delaying function in the narrative, introducing a pause between Jonah’s demand to be thrown in the sea (1:12) and the event’s occurrence (1:15). Most commentators discuss only the events of 1:13 and their causes. In this article, I suggest an interpretation of Jonah 1:13 based on the imagery of the narrative. An analysis of the use of metaphors and symbols does not replace the message of the verse; such an analysis simply augments it with motives of the seamen’s conversion. Beside the narrative level, there is a hidden level suggesting a deeper understanding of the story where symbols and metaphors have a consolidating function. Distance, directions, and movement in Jonah 1…
Scientific writing for impact factor journals
2013
EASARCICAPLivre dispo. dans :hal-00832739, version 1; Publish or Perish. This old adage illustrates the importance of scientific communication; essential to research, it also represents a strategic sector for each country’s competitiveness. An often-neglected topic, scientific communication is of vital importance, with new information technologies accelerating and profoundly changing how knowledge is disseminated. The necessity of optimally disseminating experts’ findings has also become crucial to researchers, institutes and universities alike, which has prompted the recent advent of Impact Factors for the evaluation and financing of research, the goal being for scientific knowledge to be …
Transpoliittinen postdemokratia : Jean Baudrillardin poliittinen teoria ja sen relevanssi demokratian kriisin selittämisessä
2016
Tämän tutkielman aiheena on ranskalaisen sosiologin ja filosofin Jean Baudrillardin (1929–2007) poliittinen teoria. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan Baudrillardin kulutusyhteiskuntaa, simulaatiota ja massoja koskevaa analyysiä poliittisena teoriana, joka on liitettävissä demokratian kriisiytymistä koskevaan keskusteluun. Tutkielma tarkastelee Baudrillardin tekstejä uudesta näkökulmasta, sillä Baudrillardia ei tyypillisesti lueta politiikan teoreetikkona, vaan hänet tunnetaan marxilaisesta kapitalismin kritiikistä sekä semioottisesta simulaation teoriastaan. Tutkielmassa perehdytään Baudrillardin laajassa tuotannossa esiin tuotuihin kulttuuriin ja yhteiskunnallisiin muutoksiin ja argumentoidaan nä…
«Критическое отношение молодых финнов к России» : Конструирование образа в статьях Helsingin Sanomat
2023
Tässä kandidaatintutkielmassa tarkastelen, millaisen kuvan suomalainen lehdistö välittää lukijoille Venäjää koskevista uutisista. Tutkimuksen kohteena on erityisesti nuoret ja heidän suhtautumisensa Venäjään. Tutkimus oli luonteeltaan laadullinen ja aineistoa lähestyttiin semioottisen analyysin avulla, jotta tutkimuskysymyksiin saataisiin mahdollisimman kattava vastaus. Tutkimus koostuu viidestä luvusta, joista kolmessa ensimmäisessä luvussa käsitellään teoriaa, tutkimusmateriaaleja – ja kysymyksiä ja lopuissa luvuissa analysoidaan materiaaleja ja vedotaan johtopäätöksiin. Tutkimuksen teoreettisessa osassa perehdytään tutkimuksen kannalta keskeisiin kielitieteellisiin teorioihin eli semioot…
Entextualization and resemiotization as resources for identification in social media
2014
Drawing on insights provided by linguistic anthropology, the study of multisemioticity and research in computer-mediated discourse (CMD), this chapter discusses how entextualization (Bauman & Briggs, 1990; Silverstein & Urban, 1996; Blommaert, 2005, pp. 46–8) and resemiotization (Iedema, 2003; Scollon & Scollon, 2004, pp. 101–3; Scollon, 2008) are key resources for identity work in social media. Three key arguments inspire and give direction to our discussion, each of them laying down touchstones for language scholars who wish to investigate identity in social media. First, for many individuals and social or cultural groups, social media are increasingly significant grassroots arenas for in…
Conservation of traditional rural biotopes in Finland : a social-ecological approach
2018
This research focuses on conservation of traditional rural biotopes, which are biodiverse meadows and wood-pastures that are dependent on management through grazing or mowing. These low-intensity management actions have become rare as a result of agricultural modernisation. I have utilised a social-ecological approach in order to seek for the most critical factors hindering conservation of traditional rural biotopes in Finland. I also explore practical solutions that have the potential to improve their conservation status. The coverage of traditional rural biotopes has faced severe habitat loss during the last 150 years. This has led to endangerment of several habitat types and species that…
Current agri-environmental policies dismiss varied perceptions and discourses on management of traditional rural biotopes
2017
Traditional rural biotopes (TRBs) are threatened habitats that host significant biodiversity and several ecosystem services, and depend on active management such as low-intensity grazing. The current study explores private landowners’ decision-making on TRB management and abandonment within a social-ecological system framework. We provide insight into supporting resilience of TRB systems in the face of agricultural modernization. Using a mixed methods approach with content analysis and Q analysis, we demonstrate that TRB management fosters cultural, biological, aesthetic, and utilitarian values. These are reflected in different ways through conservationist's, profit-oriented farmer's, lands…
Demo 161.
A classroom demonstration is presented showing that the voltage-intensity curve of the filament of an incandescent light bulb is non-linear. For a tungsten filament, it is observed…
