The soundslide report : innovative journalism or misplaced works of art?
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Nordicom Review. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.2478/nor-2014-0007 Open Access The audio slideshow-or soundslide report-represents a new format for journalistic reporting on online news sites. It is not very widely used, but it has certain discursive and aesthetic potentials indicating that it could contribute substantially to the ecology of journalistic genres. The article offers an illustration and discussion of these potentials, asking how the format communicates and how it affects journalism in general. Starting out with a close reading of a sample text and a discussion of the format's position in a network of g…
Tracking the evolution of warning signals
1996
EVOLUTIONARYstudies are hampered by a lack of experimental ways in which to test past events such as the origination of aposematism1–7, whereby unpalatable or poisonous prey signal their unprofitability, often by being warningly coloured. Inexperienced predators do learn to avoid unpalatable prey as a result of such signals8–10, but in addition there may be an inherited cautiousness about attacking when common or conspicuous warning signals are evident11–16. As current predators are not naive in the evolutionary sense, it is still not resolved3–7,17,18 whether aposematism originated only in aggregations of prey19,20 or among solitary prey as well21–23. Here we explore this controversy in ev…
CREATIVE TOOLS FOR THE FORMATION OF PUBLIC SIGNS IN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT OF THE BALTIC STATES
2014
<p>In public space there is the information, that is always designed with a specific purpose. For example, signposts are placed to provide direction guidance and to highlight some of the most important objects. Public signs function as the visiting cards of some institution or enterprise, creating indirectly a definite image of these institutions or some ethnic or social groups, while graffiti is written to create and maintain a public image and to express emotions or attitudes towards some person, a group of people, events or processes. To achieve the expected objective the authors of signs often use the eye-catching texts that differ from linguistic and para-linguistic means, such a…
Completeness and timeliness: Cancer registries could/should improve their performance.
2015
Abstract Cancer registries must provide complete and reliable incidence information with the shortest possible delay for use in studies such as comparability, clustering, cancer in the elderly and adequacy of cancer surveillance. Methods of varying complexity are available to registries for monitoring completeness and timeliness. We wished to know which methods are currently in use among cancer registries, and to compare the results of our findings to those of a survey carried out in 2006. Methods In the framework of the EUROCOURSE project, and to prepare cancer registries for participation in the ERA-net scheme, we launched a survey on the methods used to assess completeness, and also on t…

The Mediation of Politics through Twitter: An Analysis of Messages posted during the Campaign for the German Federal Election 2013
2015
Patterns found in digital trace data are increasingly used as evidence of social phenomena. Still, the role of digital services not as mirrors but instead as mediators of social reality has been neglected. We identify characteristics of this mediation process by analyzing Twitter messages referring to politics during the campaign for the German federal election 2013 and comparing the thus emerging image of political reality with established measurements of political reality. We focus on the relationship between temporal dynamics in politically relevant Twitter messages and crucial campaign events, comparing dominant topics in politically relevant tweets with topics prominent in surveys and …
A new approach to partial discharge detection under DC voltage
2018
The continuing development of HVDC power transmission systems presents many problems related to evaluation of the reliability of power system assets [1]-[5]. In this context the identification of insulation defects plays a key role in preventing unexpected failures of electrical components. Partial discharge (PD) measurement is a useful approach to assessing the condition of HV power apparatus and cables. Such measurements are also widely employed for HVAC systems. The inception mechanisms of PD in AC systems are well-known, and measurements are usually performed following the IEC 60270 standard [6]. PD measurements under DC voltage present complexities related to the nature of the phenomen…
A new PLC-based smart metering architecture for medium/low voltage grids: Feasibility and experimental characterization
2018
Abstract This paper investigates the feasibility of a smart metering architecture for modern power grids in the smart cities framework. A particular focus is made on Automatic Meter Reading, with the aim of facing some costs and safety drawbacks of current solutions (such as dependence from wireless communication providers, reliability problems in bad weather conditions, and exposition to cyber-attacks). The proposed architecture exploits power line communications (PLC) at both low and medium voltage level, thanks to new devices and an innovative medium voltage PLC coupling system. The new coupling solution and the whole smart metering architecture are experimentally verified in a wide freq…
Combining conjunctive rule extraction with diffusion maps for network intrusion detection
2013
Network security and intrusion detection are important in the modern world where communication happens via information networks. Traditional signature-based intrusion detection methods cannot find previously unknown attacks. On the other hand, algorithms used for anomaly detection often have black box qualities that are difficult to understand for people who are not algorithm experts. Rule extraction methods create interpretable rule sets that act as classifiers. They have mostly been combined with already labeled data sets. This paper aims to combine unsupervised anomaly detection with rule extraction techniques to create an online anomaly detection framework. Unsupervised anomaly detectio…
