Levy targeting and the principle of detailed balance

2011

We investigate confining mechanisms for Lévy flights under premises of the principle of detailed balance. In this case, the master equation of the jump-type process admits a transformation to the Lévy-Schrödinger semigroup dynamics akin to a mapping of the Fokker-Planck equation into the generalized diffusion equation. This sets a correspondence between above two stochastic dynamical systems, within which we address a (stochastic) targeting problem for an arbitrary stability index μ ε (0,2) of symmetric Lévy drivers. Namely, given a probability density function, specify the semigroup potential, and thence the jump-type dynamics for which this PDF is actually a long-time asymptotic (target) …

Performance of a new real time digital pulse processing system for X-ray and gamma ray semiconductor detectors

2014

New generation spectroscopy systems have advanced towards digital pulse processing (DPP) approaches. DPP systems, based on direct digitizing and processing of detector signals, have recently been favoured over analog pulse processing electronics, ensuring better performance. In this work, we present the performance of a new real time DPP system for X-ray and gamma ray semiconductor detectors. The system is based on a commercial digitizer equipped with a custom DPP firmware, developed by our group, for on-line pulse shape and height analysis. X-ray and gamma ray spectra measurements with cadmium telluride (CdTe) and germanium (Ge) detectors, coupled to resistive feedback preamplifiers, will …

Digital filtering and analysis for a semiconductor X-ray detector data acquisition

2007

Abstract Pile-up distortion is a major drawback in X-ray spectroscopy at high count rate. Pulse width narrowing with shaping techniques can lead to the reduction of the pile-up distortion, but a low shaping time reduces the noise filtration and leads to a poor energy resolution. Thus, only a best compromise solution between the pile-up and the noise requirements is achievable. The hardware manipulation needed to adjust the parameters of the traditional electronic shaping amplifiers makes it uneasy to tests various settings in different conditions. Digital techniques can help to overcome such difficulties. A digital signal processing and analysis system for X-ray spectroscopy is described in…

The Effect of Dexamethasone and Diuretics on Peritumor Brain Edema: Comparative Study of Tissue Water Content and CT

1976

Eighteen brain tumor patients were pre-operatively treated with dexamethasone, 4 × 4 mg i.m. for 4–6 days, and furosemide, 3 × 40 mg p.o. for 2–4 days. Water and electrolyte content were determined in biopsies removed from peritumoral cortex and white matter during operation and compared with the results from 31 patients not pre-treated and 28 patients treated with dexamethasone alone (16–24 mg i.m./day for 4–6 days). While the water content in cortex did not change significantly it fell in white matter from 79.90 ± 0.81 in untreated to 77.29 ± 0.76 in dexamethasone-treated and to 75.53 ± 1.03 in patients treated with a combination of dexamethasone and furosemide. With the diminution of wat…

Existence and uniqueness of a solution for a parabolic quasilinear problem for linear growth functionals with $L^1$ data

2002

We introduce a new concept of solution for the Dirichlet problem for quasilinear parabolic equations in divergent form for which the energy functional has linear growth. Using Kruzhkov's method of doubling variables both in space and time we prove uniqueness and a comparison principle in $L^1$ for these solutions. To prove the existence we use the nonlinear semigroup theory.

Two positive solutions for a Dirichlet problem with the (p,q)‐Laplacian

2020

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of two solutions for a nonlinear elliptic problem involving the (p,q) -Laplacian operator. The solutions are obtained by using variational methods and critical points theorems. The positivity of the solutions is shown by applying a generalized version of the strong maximum principle.

Symmetrization for singular semilinear elliptic equations

2012

In this paper, we prove some comparison results for the solution to a Dirichlet problem associated with a singular elliptic equation and we study how the summability of such a solution varies depending on the summability of the datum f. © 2012 Fondazione Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata and Springer-Verlag.

Fully representable and*-semisimple topological partial*-algebras

2012

We continue our study of topological partial *-algebras, focusing our attention to *-semisimple partial *-algebras, that is, those that possess a {multiplication core} and sufficiently many *-representations. We discuss the respective roles of invariant positive sesquilinear (ips) forms and representable continuous linear functionals and focus on the case where the two notions are completely interchangeable (fully representable partial *-algebras) with the scope of characterizing a *-semisimple partial *-algebra. Finally we describe various notions of bounded elements in such a partial *-algebra, in particular, those defined in terms of a positive cone (order bounded elements). The outcome …

Radó-Kneser-Choquet Theorem for simply connected domains (p-harmonic setting)

2018

A remarkable result known as Rad´o-Kneser-Choquet theorem asserts that the harmonic extension of a homeomorphism of the boundary of a Jordan domain ⌦ ⇢ R2 onto the boundary of a convex domain Q ⇢ R2 takes ⌦ di↵eomorphically onto Q . Numerous extensions of this result for linear and nonlinear elliptic PDEs are known, but only when ⌦ is a Jordan domain or, if not, under additional assumptions on the boundary map. On the other hand, the newly developed theory of Sobolev mappings between Euclidean domains and Riemannian manifolds demands to extend this theorem to the setting on simply connected domains. This is the primary goal of our article. The class of the p -harmonic equations is wide enou…
