Amplification of nonlinear currents generation at harmonics frequencies of submillimeter radiation

The conditions are found when rapid heating of the electrons of a degenerate semiconductor in the presence of two electric fields, one constant and the other variable, is accompanied by the formation of a distribution function significantly departing from the Fermi one. It is also shown that the newly found modification of the electron distribution yields a relative amplification of nonlinear currents generation.

Excitation power dependence of the Purcell effect in photonic crystal microcavity lasers with quantum wires

The Purcell effect dependence on the excitation power is studied in photonic crystal microcavity lasers embedding InAs/InP quantum wires. In the case of non-lasing modes, the Purcell effect has low dependence on the optical pumping, attributable to an exciton dynamics combining free and localized excitons. In the case of lasing modes, the influence of the stimulated emission makes ambiguous the determination of the Purcell factor. We have found that this ambiguity can be avoided by measuring the dependence of the decay time on the excitation power. These results provide insights in the determination of the Purcell factor in microcavity lasers. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of γ-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 108 n s−1cm−2 at the target position and negligible neutron halo. Semitoroidal detector configuration for large (well-type) Ge(Li) detectors

Abstract A “semitoroidal” detector configuration intended for making large Ge(Li) detectors with approximately homogeneous electric fields is described in detail. Test measurements have been carried out with a relatively small semitoroidal detector. The performance of the semitoroidal detector having a volume of more than 150 cm 3 is discussed.

Polarization of the Radiation Emitted in GaAs Semiconductors Driven by Far Infrared Fields

The effects due to the mixing of two far infrared electric fields on the harmonic generation process in low doped GaAs bulks are studied by a three dimensional multivalleys Monte Carlo simulation. The conversion efficiency is calculated by using the appropriate Maxwell equation for the propagation of an electro-magnetic wave along a given direction in the medium. In particular, we focus our attention on the polarization of the generated harmonics, by comparing the polarization obtained from the mixing of an oscillating field with a static electric field with that obtained in the presence of two cyclostationary fields, having an integer ratio between the two frequencies. Magnetic field enhanced robustness of quantized current plateaus in single and double quantum dot non-adiabatic single charge pumps

We compare the robustness of the quantized current plateaus of semiconductor non-adiabatic quantized charge pumps consisting of a single quantum dot (SQD) and two QDs connected in series (DQD). For the SQD application of a perpendicular magnetic field leads to an enhanced robustness of the first current plateau I = ef, with f the pumping frequency and e the elementary charge. In contrast for the DQD a comparably enhanced robustness of the plateau I = 2ef is found. These findings might allow generation of higher currents without compromising quantization accuracy by optimizing the device geometry.

Dephasing of orbital and spin degrees of freedom in semiconductor quantum dots due to phonons and magnons

Phonon-induced decoherence of orbital degrees of freedom in quantum dots (QDs) (GaAs/InAs) is studied and the relevant time-scales are estimated versus dot dimension. Dephasing of excitons due to acoustic phonons and optical phonons, including enhancement of the effective Frohlich constant caused by localization, is assessed for the state-of-art QDs. Temporal inefficiency of Pauli blocking in QDs due to lattice inertia is additionally predicted. For QD placed in a diluted magnetic semiconductor medium a magnon induced dephasing of spin is estimated in accordance with experimental results for Zn(Mn)Se/CdSe. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Search for the radioactivity of 180mTa using an underground HPGe sandwich spectrometer

Abstract The radioactivity of 180m Ta has never been detected. The present attempt to detect it was carried out using a newly developed HPGe sandwich spectrometer installed 500 m water equivalent underground in the HADES laboratory. The sample consisted of 6 discs of tantalum of natural isotopic composition with a total mass of 1500 g and a total mass for 180 Ta of 180 mg. The sample was measured for 68 days and the resulting lower bound for the half-life of 180m Ta was 2.0×10 16  y, which is a factor of 2.8 higher than the previous highest value.

Cyclotrons are used worldwide to produce radiopharmaceuticals by proton irradiation of a suitable target. The intense secondary neutron beam generated by proton interactions with the target induce high radionuclide activities in the target assembly parts that may result in an exposure to high dose levels of the operators during maintenance. The main goal of this work is to evaluate gamma-emitting radionuclide activities induced in Havar foils and titanium windows of a target assembly and carousel stripper forks of an IBA CYCLONE 18/9 cyclotron.
