Explicit solutions for second-order operator differential equations with two boundary-value conditions. II

AbstractBoundary-value problems for second-order operator differential equations with two boundary-value conditions are studied for the case where the companion operator is similar to a block-diagonal operator. This case is strictly more general than the one treated in an earlier paper, and it provides explicit closed-form solutions of boundary-value problem in terms of data without increasing the dimension of the problem.

Partial differential equations governed by accretive operators

The theory of nonlinear semigroups in Banach spaces generated by accretive operators has been very useful in the study of many nonlinear partial differential equations Such a theory is fundamentally based in the Crandall-Liggett Theorem and in the contributions of Ph. Benilan. In this paper, after outlining some of the main points of this theory, we present some of the applications to some nonlinear partial differential equations that appear in different fields of Science.

Relations between the Hepp-Lieb and the Alli-Sewell Laser Models

In this paper we show that the dissipative version of the laser model proposed by Alli and Sewell can be obtained by considering the stochastic limit of the (open system) hamiltonian introduced by Hepp and Lieb in their seminal work. We also prove that the Dicke-Haken-Lax hamiltonian produces, after the stochastic limit is considered, the generator of a semigroup with equations of motion very similar to those of Alli-Sewell, and coinciding with these under suitable conditions.

Geometrical characterization of non-Markovianity

We introduce a new tool for the quantitative characterisation of the departure form Markovianity of a given dynamical process. Our tool can be applied to a generic $N$-level system and extended straightforwardly to Gaussian continuous-variable systems. It is linked to the change of the volume of physical states that are dynamically accessible to a system and provides qualitative expectations in agreement with some of the analogous tools proposed so far. We illustrate its prediticve power by tackling a few canonical examples.

Killing (absorption) versus survival in random motion

We address diffusion processes in a bounded domain, while focusing on somewhat unexplored affinities between the presence of absorbing and/or inaccessible boundaries. For the Brownian motion (L\'{e}vy-stable cases are briefly mentioned) model-independent features are established, of the dynamical law that underlies the short time behavior of these random paths, whose overall life-time is predefined to be long. As a by-product, the limiting regime of a permanent trapping in a domain is obtained. Longterm damped dynamics of the extensible suspension bridge

This work is focused on the doubly nonlinear equation, whose solutions represent the bending motion of an extensible, elastic bridge suspended by continuously distributed cables which are flexible and elastic with stiffness k^2. When the ends are pinned, long-term dynamics is scrutinized for arbitrary values of axial load p and stiffness k^2. For a general external source f, we prove the existence of bounded absorbing sets.When f is timeindependent, the related semigroup of solutions is shown to possess the global attractor of optimal regularity and its characterization is given in terms of the steady states of the problem.
