The concept of symbol has always been very controversial for the science that studies the processes of signification, at the same time too rich in determinations by the common sense and too inconsistent from a formal point of view. A gastronomic example may be that of pizza and pasta that, at a certain moment, acquired the role of symbols of Italian gastronomy to the point of being perceived as fetishes of taste (which is both gastronomic thought and aesthetic sensibility) of this country. Everybody forgot not only how recent was their invention but also that they were just two of the several possible elements of an enormously more complex system.

A history of Italian semiotics has not yet been written (as of semiotics in general). There are, scattered in journals and volumes of various kinds, many different reconnaissance, explorations, syntheses, chronologies, bibliographies. Nothing overall, from a historiographic point of view, or exhaustive, from a theoretical point of view. It is by no means established, moreover, that the time has come to launch such a challenge. When a discipline starts looking back to compile its own history, it is almost certainly in crisis.

En el español actual, existen diferentes ejemplos de infinitivos introducidos por una preposición aparentemente superflua: el infinitivo puede aparecer precedido por la preposición de (Le dijo de ir), por la preposición a (Lo mandó a callar) y por la preposición para (Le dijo para ir de inmediato).
