Audience involvement in creative media for development: Making sense of the semiotic interface

2017

This article explores the role that semiotic communication plays in the generation of narrative affect. It also draws on Suruchi Sood’s concept of audience involvement as being capable of increasing self-efficacy and collective-efficacy, both of which are crucial to behaviour change. It therefore, demonstrates how semiotic tropes are used in creative media narratives to elicit affect and in turn generate authentic audience involvement with the subjects of those narratives, a process which eventually has positive consequences for behaviour change communication. Hence, these narratives fueled by semiotics, become the threshing floor where potential audiences are drawn into pro-social discours…

Semiótica da cidade: corpos, espaços, tecnologias

2015

2011

Our study focuses on how the discourse markers (DM) participate in the construction of discursive alterity. In our approach, the DM builds, for an assertion, a guarantor with its own semantics, which is the semantics of the lexical element constituting the basis of DM. Naturellement and bien entendu build referential value which ”disempowers” the speaker as a guarantor of his words. This desubjectivation is realized differently in each case analyzed, and is determined by the semantic identity of the DM. In this article we analyze how the DM build modulated commitment of the speaker in his role as the guarantor, convened by the semantics of the DM in the ”disresponsibilization” of the speake…

Learning teamwork through a computer game: for the sake of performance or collaborative learning?

2021

AbstractOur study examined using a computer-based learning game as a tool to facilitate teaching and learning teamwork skills. The game was applied to an undergraduate level human resource management course at a business school in Finland. We focused on students’ experiences and key learning outcomes of collaborative learning of teamwork skills through the game, and our analysis highlighted two key features of learning outcomes. First, the computer-based learning game promoted students’ self-reflection and evaluation of their individual team roles. Second, although the game taught students the importance of continuous information sharing in teamwork, their evaluation of team outcomes was pe…

Il mito della vera storia. Giuliano secondo Ignazio Buttitta

2020

The myth of the bandit Giuliano – the outcome and symbol of a mafia culture and of a political…

Le nature del trucco. Forme e sostanze del make-up green

2022

The paper examines the semiotic articulation of naturality through a structural analysis of green make-up packaging. The relations this universe establishes with its opposite, that of “traditional” make-up, find manifestation in the way the three visual strategies implemented by make-up brands and identified through the analysis enhance continuity or discontinuity with respect to this figurative universe. An attempt will be made to show the complex discursive construction of nature through often heteroclite discourses within which differentiated isotopes can be found. Still, besides being brand choices that differentially articulate the theme of nature from an aesthetic point of view, each …

Semiotica marcata: frammenti di un manifesto

2021

2021

Beyond health issues, we know that the pandemic has changed our daily lives. Accelerating socio-cultural trends that were already present in our contemporaneity, such as functionalism, the control of bodies, the fear of others, forced hygiene, the reduction of essential freedoms, work from home ... The semiologist, constantly on the hunt of signals and symbols to be interpreted, he thus tried to intercept some of these modulations of daily life, with a kind of diary in public, sprinkled with various insights proposed to readers of various kinds. The following text is a partial collection of these notes, which, read now, may perhaps change their meaning, and interest those who, out of desper…

Blade runners and daredevils : a case study on the representation of two Paralympians in The Guardian

2015

Erilaisilla kielenkäyttötavoilla, ts. diskursseilla, joilla näitä urheilijoita kuvataan, onkin olennaisesti vaikutusta esimerkiksi siihen, millaiseksi fyysisesti vammaiset kokevat tulevansa kohdelluksi yhteiskunnassa. Tämän takia onkin tärkeää kiinnittää huomiota median luomiin kuviin. Tutkielmassa käsitellään vammaisurheilijoiden representaatiota brittiläislehti The Guardianissa. Analysoin kahta lehden internet-versiossa julkaistua artikkelia, joista toinen käsittelee pikajuoksija O…

Animal liberation, American anti-terrorist culture and Denis Hennelly’sBold Native

2016

ABSTRACTSince its birth in the last quarter of the twentieth century, the animal liberation movement has attempted to expose the transnational, global character of speciecism and institutionalised forms of exploitation. Within the American panorama, however, the “war against terror” following 9/11 had such a profound effect on (radical) activism at a legal and legislative level that the movement found itself in the position of having to reassess their focus, leading to theoretical and aesthetic responses to anti-terrorist rhetoric. The aim of this article is (1) to examine the manner by which anti-terrorist rhetoric affected the movement and how the movement appropriated such rhetoric to re…
