ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is studying the physics of strongly interacting matter, and in particular the properties of the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), using proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The ALICE Collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus, planned for installation in the second long LHC shutdown in the years 2018–2019. Adequate number of consumers in a liking test. Insights from resampling in seven studies

The recommended number of consumers to be enrolled in a hedonic test comparing several products usually ranges from 50 to 100, at least if no liking segmentation is sought. This paper seeks to examine whether such a panel size range is adequate, by means of 7 trials with different levels of product space complexity. Five types of products were tested: Two varied in fattiness and sweetness and were tested under the same conditions in two separate laboratories (4 trials); the remaining three, varying in taste and texture, were each tested in a different laboratory (3 trials). RFID passive gas sensor integrating carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotube (CNT) composites are sensitive to the presence of gases due to their high surface-to-volume ratio and hollow structure that are well suited for gas molecule absorption and storage. Such sensing capability is here integrated with UHF RF identification (RFID) technology to achieve passive and low-cost sensors, remotely readable. Effects of radiation and hydrogen-loading on the performances of raman-distributed temperature fiber sensors

International audience; The integration of Raman-distributed temperature fiber-based sensors (RDTS) into the envisioned French deep geological repository for nuclear wastes, called Cigéo requires evaluating how the performances of RDTS evolve in harsh environments, more precisely in presence of H2 or γ-rays. Both H2 and radiations are shown to affect the temperature measurements made with the single-ended RDTS technology. The amplitudes of the observed effects depend on the different classes of multimode fibers varying in terms of composition and coatings. Radiation and Hydrogen-Loading effects on Raman fiber-based temperature sensors

We present experimental studies on how Raman based temperature sensors undergone two different treatments: gamma-radiation and H-loading. Unfortunately, gamma radiation and hydrogen release in harsh nuclear environment can affect the temperature measurements based on this technology of sensor, limiting the sensor performances. Moreover, the Raman device response in both cases changes with the different classes of multimode fibers that are used by the engineers.

It is often useful or even indispensable to know the locations of the nodes in a wireless sensor network (WSN), from both network functionality and applications point of view. A potential yet one of the most challenging method is to utilize received signal strength indicator (RSSI) for distance estimation. Albeit easily adopted, using of RSSI is notorious for imprecise distance estimates which can lead to inaccuracies in location estimates. A novel 3D recovery method by dynamic (de)focused projection

This paper presents a novel 3D recovery method based on structured light. This method unifies depth from focus (DFF) and depth from defocus (DFD) techniques with the use of a dynamic (de)focused projection. With this approach, the image acquisition system is specifically constructed to keep a whole object sharp in all of the captured images. Therefore, only the projected patterns experience different defocused deformations according to the object’s depths. Development of a biosensor for copper detection in aqueous solutions using an Anemonia sulcata recombinant GFP.

Fluorescent proteins from marine organisms represent potential candidates for biosensor development. In this paper, we described the isolation of a native green fluorescent protein from Anemonia sulcata and the cloning and purification of its equivalent as a recombinant protein in Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the spectroscopic behaviours of the native and recombinant GFPs were investigated as a function of Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb 2+ and Ni2+ concentration. Our results suggest the high selectivity of both proteins at copper than the other metals and, for the recombinant protein, a great sensitivity at a very low concentration (0.1-1 μM).
