P 56 tDCS shows no effects on motor cortex excitability at rest
2017
Introduction Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a widely used technique in research and clinics. However, the underlying physiological mechanisms are not yet clear. Modeling studies suggest that the electric field during tDCS is dominated by a tangential component which predominantly modifies active synaptic connections ( Radman et al., 2007 ). We have previously shown that tDCS with an increased tangential compared to the conventional montage introduced by Nitsche and Paulus (2000) , suppresses the effects of paired associative stimulation of the supplementary motor area and the primary motor cortex (PASSMA-M1) independent of tDCS polarity (Faber et al., under submission). H…

Rapid nucleus-scale reorganization of chromatin in neurons enables transcriptional adaptation for memory consolidation
2020
AbstractThe interphase nucleus is functionally organized in active and repressed territories defining the transcriptional status of the cell. However, it remains poorly understood how the nuclear architecture of neurons adapts in response to behaviorally relevant stimuli that trigger fast alterations in gene expression patterns. Imaging of fluorescently tagged nucleosomes revealed that pharmacological manipulation of neuronal activity in vitro and auditory cued fear conditioning in vivo induce nucleus-scale restructuring of chromatin within minutes. Furthermore, the acquisition of auditory fear memory is impaired after infusion of a drug into auditory cortex which blocks chromatin reorganiz…
Fractional Modeling of the AC Large-Signal Frequency Response in Magnetoresistive Current Sensors
2013
Fractional calculus is considered when derivatives and integrals of non-integer order are applied over a specific function. In the electrical and electronic domain, the transfer function dependence of a fractional filter not only by the filter order n, but additionally, of the fractional order α is an example of a great number of systems where its input-output behavior could be more exactly modeled by a fractional behavior. Following this aim, the present work shows the experimental ac large-signal frequency response of a family of electrical current sensors based in different spintronic conduction mechanisms. Using an ac characterization set-up the sensor transimpedance function is obtain…

Preamble Sampling MAC Protocol for Low Power Wireless Sensor Networks with IEEE 802.15.4 Transceivers
2006
In this paper a preamble sampling MAC protocol for low power wireless sensor networks is proposed. The article describes the implementation of the protocol using network nodes equipped with the Chipcon CC2420 802.15.4 transceiver. The power consumption of the transceiver has been measured and the MAC protocol has been adapted to the transceiver properties. The results show the trade-off between power consumption and transmission delay for this algorithm during the communication process.
A Battery-free Asset Monitoring System based on RF Wireless Power Transfer
2020
In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, asset monitoring represents an appealing implementation of Wireless Sensor Networks due to the enormous benefits associated with being able to monitor and record the exact position and transportation conditions of assets, personal objects, and the like. This kind of infrastructure enables the provision of increasingly advanced services, including the ability to measure the movement speed of a monitored asset using relatively inexpensive nodes with sensing capabilities and wireless transmission and reception. These nodes would ideally employ battery-free sensors that do not require any maintenance, but conventional power supply management systems cannot s…
Neuropeptides in Primary Afferent Neurons
1990
Traditionally, the primary sensory neurons, having their perikarya in the spinal or cranial sensory ganglia with processes directed towards the periphery and the central nervous system, have been regarded to function as receptive and afferent systems which reflexly activate central effector systems.1 This, however, does not apply to the small diameter primary afferents as suggested by the observation made about a century ago that antidromic stimulation of transected dorsal roots or sensory nerves caused vasodilatation and inflammatory signs in the skin.2,3 The novel concept which has been confirmed by many investigators ascribes to small diameter (particularly unmyelinated C) primary sensor…
