Threshold-based vestibular adaptation to cross-coupled canal stimulation

Prior experiments have demonstrated that people are able to adapt to cross-coupled accelerations associated with head movements while spinning at high rotation rates (e.g., 23 rpm or 138°/s). However, while adapting, subjects commonly experience serious side effects, such as motion sickness, non-compensatory eye movements, and strong and potentially disorienting illusory body tilt or tumbling sensations. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been applied to sensory research and for the treatment of disorders in psychiatry and neurology since 1993 ( Wassermann and Zimmermann, 2012 ). Analysis of the possible benefits of aspheric intraocular lenses: review of the literature.

We reviewed recently published studies that analyzed the visual and optical quality in eyes with different spherical and aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs). Recent studies focused on visual quality metrics, such as visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, under photopic and mesopic lighting conditions and optical metrics, such as wavefront aberrations, especially spherical aberration. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand whether there is a visual and/or optical benefit of implanting aspheric IOLs over implanting spherical IOLs.

In the early 19th century, William H. Wollaston impressed the Royal Society of London with engravings of portraits. He manipulated facial features, such as the nose, and thereby dramatically changed the perceived gaze direction, although the eye region with iris and eye socket had remained unaltered. This Wollaston illusion can be thought of as head orientation attracting perceived gaze direction when the eye region is unchanged. In naturalistic viewing, the eye region changes with head orientation and typically produces a repulsion effect. Here we explore if there is a flip side to the illusion. In insects, xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes were demonstrated to regulate pheromones inactivation, clearing them from the olfactory periphery and keeping receptors ready for stimulation renewal. Here, we investigate whether similar processes could occur in mammals, focusing on the pheromonal communication between female rabbits and their newborns. Lactating rabbits emit in their milk a volatile aldehyde, 2-methylbut-2-enal, that elicits searching-grasping in neonates; called the mammary pheromone (MP), it is critical for pups which are constrained to find nipples within the 5 min of daily nursing. Optical quality comparison between 2 collagen copolymer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens designs

Purpose To compare the optical quality in vitro of 2 designs of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) for different powers and optical apertures.
