Developmental changes in the microgenesis of face perception revealed by effects of context and inversion

2011

AbstractPresent studies on the development of face perception mechanisms are ambiguous about the question of whether holistic face vision arises early, or in the second decade of life (Crookes & McKone, 2009). Measuring the time course of face matching we assess effects of context and inversion as correlates of holistic processing in the microgenesis of face perception within the first 650ms, and compare among 8- to 10-year-old children and adults. Results for adults indicate dominance of holistic viewing at brief timings, which is gradually replaced by feature selective strategies enabling them to selectively attend either internal or external features, as demanded by instruction. For chil…

Intravitreal aflibercept for the treatment of radiation-induced macular edema after ruthenium 106 plaque radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma.

2019

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of intravitreal aflibercept in patients suffering from post-radiation macular edema following plaque radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma. Methods: This prospective, interventional case series included patients affected by radiation maculopathy (RM) with macular edema secondary to ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy for choroidal melanoma. The effect of intravitreal aflibercept on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central foveal thickness (CFT) detected by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (sd-OCT), and Horgan’s grading scale of RM was evaluated throughout the 24-month follow-up. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and possible complications were also reco…

European study of the efficacy of a cross-linked gel stent for the treatment of glaucoma

2020

indexation en cours.; PURPOSE: This study investigated the efficacy and safety of a cross-linked collagen stent (XEN 45) with or without cataract surgery in the treatment of glaucoma. SETTING: Real-life setting. DESIGN: Prospective, open-label, multicenter clinical trial. METHODS: Eligible patients with glaucoma inadequately controlled by treatment, or poor compliance or intolerance to topical therapy were included. Patients were divided into those with implant only (solo group; phakic and pseudophakic patients) and implant combined with cataract surgery (combo group). Differences in average intraocular pressure (IOP) and number of medications between baseline and study end (12 months), and…

Deep sclerectomy versus trabeculectomy with low-dosage mitomycin C: four-year follow-up

2006

Aims: To compare the long-term effects of low-dosage mitomycin C (MMC) in both deep sclerectomy (DSMMC) and trabeculectomy (TPMMC) on intraocular pressure (IOP). Methods: Analysis of extended follow-up of data from a prospective clinical trial. Forty patients were originally randomised to undergo either DSMMC (19 eyes) or TPMMC (21 eyes). Follow-up was performed at postoperative day 1, weeks 1, 2 and 3, as well as months 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48. Two- to three-week data were not included in the statistical analysis. Postoperative complications, number of antiglaucoma medications and IOP were recorded at each visit. Complete (no medications) and…

Determination of corneal volume from anterior topography and topographic pachymetry: application to healthy and keratoconic eyes

2009

Purpose: To describe a method to measure corneal volume from topography and pachymetry, and test its clinical use on a sample of healthy human subjects and a case of circumscribed posterior keratoconus. Methods: Corneal curvature (PCT 200® corneal topography system; Optopol Technology SA, Zawiercie, Poland) and ultrasonic topographic pachometry on 25 points (Ophthasonic ® A-Scan/Pachometer III; Teknar Inc., St Louis, MO, USA) were measured on each of 12 young healthy corneas and one cornea suffering from circumscribed posterior keratoconus. Topography and pachymetry data were used to calculate the coordinates for the corresponding points on the posterior surface of the cornea. TableCurve 3D…

Reduction of Dopamine Level Enhances the Attractiveness of Male Drosophila to Other Males

2009

1932-6203 (Electronic); Dopamine is an important neuromodulator in animals and its roles in mammalian sexual behavior are extensively studied. Drosophila as a useful model system is widely used in many fields of biological studies. It has been reported that dopamine reduction can affect female receptivity in Drosophila and leave male-female courtship behavior unaffected. Here, we used genetic and pharmacological approaches to decrease the dopamine level in dopaminergic cells in Drosophila, and investigated the consequence of this manipulation on male homosexual courtship behavior. We find that reduction of dopamine level can induce Drosophila male-male courtship behavior, and that this beha…

Unconscious integration of multisensory bodily inputs in the peripersonal space shapes bodily self-consciousness

2017

International audience; Recent studies have highlighted the role of multisensory integration as a key mechanism of self-consciousness. In particular, integration of bodily signals within the peripersonal space (PPS) underlies the experience of the self in a body we own (self-identification) and that is experienced as occupying a specific location in space (self-location), two main components of bodily self-consciousness (BSC). Experiments investigating the effects of multisensory integration on BSC have typically employed supra-threshold sensory stimuli, neglecting the role of unconscious sensory signals in BSC, as tested in other consciousness research. Here, we used psychophysical techniq…

Proportion of odorants impacts the configural versus elemental perception of a binary blending mixture in newborn rabbits.

2011

WOS: 000295167200002; International audience; Processing of odor mixtures by neonates is weakly understood. Previous studies showed that a binary mixture of ethyl isobutyrate/ethyl maltol (odorants A/B) blends in newborn rabbits at the 30/70 ratio: Pups would perceive a configural odor in addition to the components' odors. Here, we investigated whether the emergence of this additional odor in AB is determined by specific ratio(s) of A and B. To that goal, we tested whether pups discriminated between AB mixtures with lower (A(-)B, 8/92 ratio) or higher (A(+)B, 68/32) proportion of A. In Experiment 1, pups conditioned to A (or B) responded to A(-)B and A(+)B but not to AB. In Experiment 2, pu…

Genes involved in sex pheromone discrimination in Drosophila melanogaster and their background-dependent effect.

2012

International audience; Mate choice is based on the comparison of the sensory quality of potential mating partners, and sex pheromones play an important role in this process. In Drosophila melanogaster, contact pheromones differ between male and female in their content and in their effects on male courtship, both inhibitory and stimulatory. To investigate the genetic basis of sex pheromone discrimination, we experimentally selected males showing either a higher or lower ability to discriminate sex pheromones over 20 generations. This experimental selection was carried out in parallel on two different genetic backgrounds: wild-type and desat1 mutant, in which parental males showed high and l…

Experience influences elemental and configural perception of certain binary odour mixtures in newborn rabbits.

2011

SUMMARY Elemental and configural olfactory perception allows interaction with the environment from very early in life. To evaluate how newborn rabbits can extract and respond to information from the highly complex chemical surroundings, and how experience acts on this sensory, cognitive and behavioural capability, we ran a study in four steps including a total of eight experiments. We mainly used a binary AB mixture comprising ethyl isobutyrate (component A) and ethyl maltol (component B), previously shown as a bearer of blending properties; in rabbit pups (as in human adults), the mixture elicits a weak configural perception, i.e. the perception of a configural odour different from the odo…
