Effects of reading proficiency and of base and whole-word frequency on reading noun- and verb-derived words: An eye-tracking study in Italian primary…

2018

The aim of this study is to assess the role of readers’ proficiency and of the base-word distributional properties on eye-movement behavior. Sixty-two typically developing children, attending 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, were asked to read derived words in a sentence context. Target words were nouns derived from noun bases (e.g., umorista, ‘humorist’), which in Italian are shared by few derived words, and nouns derived from verb bases (e.g., punizione, ‘punishment’), which are shared by about 50 different inflected forms and several derived words. Data shows that base and word frequency affected first-fixation duration for nouns derived from noun bases, but in an opposite way: base frequency ha…

Facilitating terminology translation with target lemma annotations

2021

Most of the recent work on terminology integration in machine translation has assumed that terminology translations are given already inflected in forms that are suitable for the target language sentence. In day-to-day work of professional translators, however, it is seldom the case as translators work with bilingual glossaries where terms are given in their dictionary forms; finding the right target language form is part of the translation process. We argue that the requirement for apriori specified target language forms is unrealistic and impedes the practical applicability of previous work. In this work, we propose to train machine translation systems using a source-side data augmentatio…

RIGA at SemEval-2016 Task 8: Impact of Smatch Extensions and Character-Level Neural Translation on AMR Parsing Accuracy

2016

Two extensions to the AMR smatch scoring script are presented. The first extension com-bines the smatch scoring script with the C6.0 rule-based classifier to produce a human-readable report on the error patterns frequency observed in the scored AMR graphs. This first extension results in 4% gain over the state-of-art CAMR baseline parser by adding to it a manually crafted wrapper fixing the identified CAMR parser errors. The second extension combines a per-sentence smatch with an en-semble method for selecting the best AMR graph among the set of AMR graphs for the same sentence. This second modification au-tomatically yields further 0.4% gain when ap-plied to outputs of two nondeterministic…

¿Qué entienden jóvenes y adultos por “estar enamorado”?

2004

Data on conceptions about BEING IN LOVE as well as answers on marrying somebody who has desirable characteristics withou loving him/her are analyzed.  A survey on mate preferences that included an open sentence (Being in love means to me....) and a question about marrying somebody without loving him/her was administered to an intentional sample of 761 adolescents and young adults living in Buenos Aires city and its suburban area. Content analysis of free writ- ten expressions was carried out. We found that both males and females mainly consider that being in love is related to needs of sharing time together, thinking on the beloved most of the time and having deep feelings. High percentages…

At the Risk of Exaggerating : How Do Listeners React to Hyperbole?

2003

The intensive focus on the reception process of figures of speech, in terms of the psychological processes operated on their understanding, explains that nowadays a crucial limitation in figurative language theories is the production process of non-literal forms, as joint activities between speaker and hearer. Since the object of study has traditionally been the figurative sentence, either in isolation or in the context of an artificially constructed text, it is not surprising that the collaborative nature of figures has been overlooked. This paper focuses on hyperbole, a long neglected trope, despite its pervasive frequency of occurrence and co-occurrence with other tropes in everyday spee…

Evidence for Early Closure Attachment on First Pass Reading Times in French

1997

An eye-tracking experiment was conducted in French with sentences of the form “N V N1of-N2 who …” Example: “A journalist approached the barrister (male) of the singer (female) who seemed more confident (masculine or feminine gender) than (s)he ought to be.” The results are consistent with those of Cuetos and Mitchell (1988). French readers, like Spanish readers, prefer early closure (and are garden-pathed when the sentence turns out to be a late-closure attachment). This effect was exhibited by first-pass reading times that are usually assumed to reflect initial syntactic commitments. These results are discussed in relation to Frazier and Clifton's recent proposals concerning attachment me…

LEVEL OF ACTIVATION AND GOAL-DIRECTED BEHAVIOUR: The effect of chlorpromazine on aggressive, achievement oriented, and affiliation oriented verbal re…

1963

The purpose was to investigate the effect of chlorpromazine on verbal response contents in sentence completion tests. 30 male subjects participated in two chlorpromazine and one placebo session. It was found that the amount of aggressive, achievement and affiliation oriented responses was significantly reduced as an effect of drug intake. The results are discussed on the basis of the theories of conflict motivation and of arousal.

Implicit learning and implicit memory in moderate to severe memory disorders

2010

Numerous experimental psychology studies have established firmly that important parts of the human cognitive process operate automatically without the conscious or explicit control of the subjects (9). Such processes can concern memorization of episodes from life in a way that will subsequently have an implicit influence on our behavior (such as decision-making or reaction time). They can equally assist acquisition of more complex knowledge from our surroundings, by the automatic capture of the statistical regularities found in them (see Chapter “Introducing implicit learning: from the laboratory to the real life”, E. Bigand and C. Delbe). This is the way, for example, that a baby learns to…

Quan la justícia és venjança, contra un jueu

2013

In Valencia, in the year 1380, the death of a child aged six unleashes hatred and fear. A Jewish man is accused of throwing a stone at him from his window. The Criminal Justice immediately opens a suit against him and, with amazing speed, pronounces sentence in less than three months. The prosecution, the defence and the witnesses provide a short but splendid picture of the lives of subordinate people in the lower classes, a picture that speaks of values, sociability and solidarity, unsteady roots and the always delicate relationship between Jews and Christians.[ca] La mort d’un nen de sis anys, a la València de 1380, desferma odis i temors. Un jueu és acusat d’haver-li llançat una pedrada …
