Cancer Stem Cells Sensitivity Assay (STELLA) in Patients with Advanced Lung and Colorectal Cancer: A Feasibility Study.
2015
Background Cancer stem cells represent a population of immature tumor cells found in most solid tumors. Their peculiar features make them ideal models for studying drug resistance and sensitivity. In this study, we investigated whether cancer stem cells isolation and in vitro sensitivity assay are feasible in a clinical setting. Methods Cancer stem cells were isolated from effusions or fresh cancer tissue of 23 patients who progressed after standard therapy failure. Specific culture conditions selected for immature tumor cells that express markers of stemness. These cells were exposed in vitro to chemotherapeutic and targeted agents. Results Cancer stem cells were extracted from liver metas…
Vulnerability to alcohol operant-drinking behaviour: implications of environmental stim
2013
Environmental stimuli, occurring early in life, shape the drinking trajectories and the psychopathological outcome of alcohol consumption in adult life. In particular, early perinatal procedures can permanently alter various patterns of drug use and behaviour in rat adulthood (Pryce CR, 2001). Early handling (EH) apparently is responsible for neurochemical and behavioural changes in adulthood, due to boosts in maternal care after daily reunion. It has been suggested that fostered maternal care, in the form of licking and grooming, is a key feature in determining neural changes and offspring fear responses and alter the reward/reinforcement pathway through epigenetic mechanisms that likely u…
Demonstration of Stimulated-Raman-scattering suppression in optical fibers in a multifrequency pumping configuration
1999
International audience; We analyze the stimulated-Raman-scattering-(SRS) process induced by a linearly polarized multifrequency pump field in a normally dispersive single-mode fiber. We show, by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, that the SRS process may be either controlled by switching all the generated Stokes radiations to the lowest-frequency pump or suppressed for all the frequency components of the pump field. The suppression process is achieved by an appropriate choice of the frequency separation between the pumps and a particular power distribution among the frequency components of the pump field. We present experimental spectra showing the effectiveness of this suppres…
Design of a continuously tunable delay line using vectorial modulational instability and chromatic dispersion in optical fibers
2009
International audience; We design an all-optical tunable delay line based on both dispersive and wavelength conversion stages involving modulational instability of a two-frequency pump field propagating in a highly birefringent fiber. More precisely, we numerically show that, by varying the frequency separation between the two orthogonally polarized pump waves, we achieve a controllable and continuous delay of hundreds of picoseconds for signal pulse durations from picoseconds to nanoseconds, without pulse distortion and with only small peak power fluctuations. The proposed method does not require any tunable bandpass filter and can be applied to delay digital data streams at tens of Gbit/s…
Simultaneous remote extraction of multiple speech sources and heart beats from secondary speckles pattern
2009
The ability of dynamic extraction of remote sounds is very appealing. In this manuscript we propose an optical approach allowing the extraction and the separation of remote sound sources. The approach is very modular and it does not apply any constraints regarding the relative position of the sound sources and the detection device. The optical setup doing the detection is very simple and versatile. The principle is to observe the movement of the secondary speckle patterns that are generated on top of the target when it is illuminated by a spot of laser beam. Proper adaption of the imaging optics allows following the temporal trajectories of those speckles and extracting the sound signals ou…
Evaluation of pulsed electric field-assisted extraction on the microstructure and recovery of nutrients and bioactive compounds from mushroom (Agaric…
2022
Pulsed electric field (PEF) is a sustainable innovative technology that allows for the recovery of nutrients and bioactive compounds from vegetable matrices. A. bisporus was chosen for its nutritional value and the effect of PEF pretreatment was evaluated using different conditions of electric field (2–3 kV/cm), specific energy (50–200 kJ/kg) and extraction time (0–6 h) to obtain the best conditions for nutrient and bioactive compound extraction. Spectrophotometric methods were used to evaluate the different compounds, along with an analysis of mineral content by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the surface was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In …
Incorporation of metal-organic framework amino-modified MIL-101 into glycidyl methacrylate monoliths for nano LC separation.
2018
Metal-organic frameworks consisting of amino-modified MIL-101(M: Cr, Al, and Fe) crystals have been synthesized and subsequently incorporated to glycidyl methacrylate monoliths to develop novel stationary phases for nano-liquid chromatography. Two incorporation approaches of these materials in monoliths were explored. The metal-organic framework materials were firstly attached to the pore surface through reaction of epoxy groups present in the parent glycidyl methacrylate-based monolith. Alternatively, NH2 -MIL-101(M) were admixed in the polymerization mixture. Using short time UV-initiated polymerization, monolithic beds with homogenously dispersed metal-organic frameworks were obtained. T…
Solid film versus solution-phase charge-recombination dynamics of exTTF-bridge-C60 dyads.
2005
The charge-recombination dynamics of two exTTF-C 6 0 dyads (exTTF=9,10-bis(l,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene), observed after photoinduced charge separation, are compared in solution and in the solid state. The dyads differ only in the degree of conjugation of the bridge between the donor (exTTF) and the acceptor (C 6 0 ) moieties. In solution, photoexcitation of the nonconjugated dyad C 6 0 -BN-exTTF (1) (BN=1,1'-binaphthyl) shows slower charge-recombination dynamics compared with the conjugated dyad C 6 0 -TVB-exTTF (2) (TVB = bisthienylvinylenebenzene) (lifetimes of 24 and 0.6 μs, respectively), consistent with the expected stronger electronic coupling in the conjugated dyad.…
Blind source separation based interference suppression schemes for OFDM and DS-CDMA
2015
In statistical wireless signal processing, extraction of unobserved signals from observed mixtures can be achieved using Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithms. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Direct Sequence-Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) can be pronounced as the well established predominant air interface communication techniques. Consequences of an effort taken and counteractive solutions to diminish the undesirable influences encountered within the wireless air interface of those techniques with aid of BSS schemes are disclosed. Filter coefficients for the receiver are ascertained with the support of a set of energy functions and the iterative fixed point…
Influence of Geographical Location of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) on the Recovery of Bioactive Compounds Assisted by Pulsed Electric Fields
2022
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) has been consumed by humans since ancient times. It is rich in high added-value compounds such as chlorophylls, carotenoids and polyphenols. Pulsed electric fields (PEF) is an innovative non-thermal technique that improves the extraction of bioactive compounds from diverse sources. PEF pre-treatment (3 kV/cm, 100 kJ/kg) combined with supplementary extraction with binary solvents at different times was evaluated to obtain the optimal conditions for extraction. In addition, the results obtained were compared with conventional treatment (without PEF pre-treatment and constant shaking) and different strains of Spirulina from diverse geographical locations. The …
