The rational design of porous, biomass-derived eco-friendly adsorbents instead of costly synthetic, petroleum-based resins stands as a promising approach to resolving the thorny issue of sewage treatment (for example, by supplying safe water for drinking and irrigation). Abstract Back in the Middle Ages, glass artists used to produce yellowish colorations in soda-lime glasses using mixtures that contained silver salts, clay composites and natural oils. The resulting colour was a characteristic pale yellow known as silver-stain. This coloration is mainly caused by the extinction – absorption and, to a lesser extent, scattering – of light occasioned by silver nanoparticles formed inside the glass. Sepiolite-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites: Thermal, mechanical, and morphological behavior

A bisphenol A-based epoxy resin was modified with pristine sepiolite and an organically surface-modified sepiolite and thermally cured using two different curing agents: an aliphatic and a cycloaromatic diamine. The nanocomposites were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), rheology, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy. The initial sepiolite–epoxy mixtures show a better dispersion for the sepiolite-modified system that forms a percolation network structure. Mechanical properties have also been determined. Biotechnological applications of the sepiolite interactions with bacteria: Bacterial transformation and DNA extraction

International audience; Among the various clay minerals, sepiolite, which is a natural nanofibrous silicate that exhibit a poor cell toxicity, is a potential promising nanocarrier for the non-viral and stable transfer of plasmid DNA into bacteria, mammalian and human cells. We first show here that sepiolite binds to bacteria, which can be useful in decontamination protocols. In a previous research we have shown that is possible to modulate the efficiency of the absorption of different types of DNA molecules onto sepiolite, and that the DNA previously adsorbed could be recovered preserving the DNA structure and biological activity. Rheological study of gel phenomena during epoxide network formation in the presence of sepiolite

The dynamic behaviour during the crosslinking of an epoxy polymer near the gel point was monitored using rheological multiple frequency experiments. The influence of a needle-shaped inorganic nanofiller, sepiolite, either non-modified or organically surface modified during the cure process in the presence of an aliphatic and an aromatic hardener was investigated. The validity of various criteria for determining the gel point was examined for the crosslinking of these filled thermosets. Covalently modified nanoclays: synthesis, properties and applications

Abstract Clay minerals are phyllosilicates of nanoscale dimensions. According to their ability to entrap and release organic moieties, they have found applications in several fields, such as drug carrier and delivery, support for catalyst, environmental remediation and filler for polymeric matrices. The possibility to modify, by covalent linkage, their surfaces gives the possibility to form new nanomaterials with improved properties respect to the pristine clay minerals. In this chapter, the modifications of the siloxane surfaces of the most representative clay minerals, namely montmorillonite, sepiolites, laponite and halloysite were reviewed and discussed.
