Use of Combination Statin and Bile Acid Sequestrant Therapy to Treat Dyslipidemia
2015
Lipid management guidelines promulgated around the world continue to emphasize the need to reduce serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in order to reduce risk for acute cardiovascular events in both the primary and secondary prevention settings [1–3]. There is growing consensus that when it comes to LDL-C management, lower is better with no apparent lower limit that is discernible from current evidence, i.e., there is greater and greater benefit as LDL-C decreases with no apparent loss in safety [4–8]. Dyslipidemia and coronary artery disease (CAD) are widely prevalent throughout the world. Considerable effort continues to be focused on expanding the appropriate use o…
Effect of EDTA on divalent metal adsorption onto grape stalk and exhausted coffee wastes
2007
In the present work, two industrial vegetable wastes, grape stalk, coming from a wine producer, and exhausted coffee, coming from a soluble coffee manufacturer, have been investigated for the removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions in presence and in absence of the strongly complexing agent EDTA. Effects of pH and metal-EDTA molar ratio, kinetics as a function of sorbent concentration, and sorption equilibrium for both metals onto both sorbents were evaluated in batch experiments. Metal uptake was dependent of pH, reaching a maximum from pH around 5.5. EDTA was found to dramatically reduce metal adsorption, reaching total uptake inhibition for both metals onto both sorbents at e…
A novel thermodynamic approach for the complexation study of toxic metal cations by a landfill leachate
2018
Landfill leachates can contaminate nearby aquifers. The hazards deriving from this contamination also depend on the chemical speciation of various contaminants. A novel approach is proposed here to face this problem from a chemical thermodynamics point of view. The complexing ability of the soluble fraction of a landfill leachate (collected from Bellolampo, Palermo, Italy) towards Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ has been investigated at T = 298.15 K in NaClaq at I = 0.1 mol dm−3. The soluble fraction of the landfill leachate was first characterized by different analytical techniques. Then, its acid–base properties were studied by ISE-H+ potentiometric titrations and modelled by the so-called diprotic-l…
