Measuring High-Order Interactions in Rhythmic Processes Through Multivariate Spectral Information Decomposition

2021

Many complex systems in physics, biology and engineering are modeled as dynamical networks and described using multivariate time series analysis. Recent developments have shown that the emergent dynamics of a network system are significantly affected by interactions involving multiple network nodes which cannot be described using pairwise links. While these higher-order interactions can be probed using information-theoretic measures, a rigorous framework to describe them in the frequency domain is still lacking. This work presents an approach for the spectral decomposition of multivariate information measures, capable of identifying higher-order synergistic and redundant interactions betwee…

Global Estimation of Soil Moisture Persistence with L and C-Band Microwave Sensors

2018

© 2018 IEEE Measurements of soil moisture are needed for a better global understanding of the land surface-climate feedbacks at both the local and the global scale. Satellite sensors operating in the low frequency microwave spectrum (from 1 to 10 GHz) have proven to be suitable for soil moisture retrievals. These sensors now cover nearly 4 decades thus allowing for global multi-mission climate data records. In this paper, we assess the possibility of using L-band (SMOS) and C-band (AMSR2, ASCAT) remotely sensed soil moisture time series for the global estimation of soil moisture persistence. A multi-output Gaussian process regression model is applied to ensure spatio-temporal coverage of th…

Experimental and DFT studies on competitive heterocyclic rearrangements. part 2: A one-atom side-chain versus the classic three-atom side-chain (Boul…

2007

The experimental investigation of the base-catalyzed rearrangements of 3-acylamino-1,2,4-oxadiazoles evidenced a new reaction pathway which competes with the well-known ring-degenerate Boulton- Katritzky rearrangement (BKR). The new reaction consists of a one-atom side-chain rearrangement that is base-activated, occurs at a higher temperature than the BKR, and irreversibly leads to the corresponding 2-acylamino-1,3,4-oxadiazoles. An extensive DFT study is reported to elucidate the proposed reaction mechanism and to compare the three possible inherent routes: (i) the reversible three-atom side-chain ring-degenerate BKR, (ii) the ring contraction-ring expansion route (RCRE), and (iii) the one…

Impact of changing forest management on soil organic matter in low mountain acid media

2002

The impacts of changes in vegetation cover from native deciduous forest to Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) and of human activity on soil organic matter (SOM) characteristics were studied in two low mountain areas of east-central France. No striking difference in soil type (Dystric Cambisol) was found between the two sites. Humus-rich horizons were of the “Dysmull” and “Moder” types, regardless of the nature of the bedrock. Contrary to a common affirmation concerning other coniferous species, Douglas fir had no negative effect on soil pH and humification degree of SOM, with respect to the native beech vegetation. Pruning and partial clearing slightly improved humification, espect…

Is CD1a involved in antitumour immune responses during carcinogenesis?

2004

Sir, I read with interest the article of Coventry and Morton (2003) that investigated DC infiltration within breast cancers and the association with survival. Interestingly, they found that more patients were alive at the 5-year time point in the group with higher CD1a DC density than the lower CD1a DC group, but this failed to reach statistical significance at the P=0.05 level. In our opinion, the role of CD1 family molecules in antitumour immune responses, and in particular of CD1a, should be more debated, since its expression was recently described not only in monocyte-derived dendritic cells, but also in nonmesenchymal cytotypes, that is, epithelial cells (Ulanova et al, 2000). We recen…

Highly efficient separation of amines by electrokinetic chromatography using resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids as pseudo-stationary phases

1998

Abstract Resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids, macrocyclic molecules built up by four alkylidene-bridged resorcinol units, were synthesized and used as pseudostationary phases in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). Resorcarenes provide a stable structure and good solubility in electrolytes even with organic modifiers. The high electrophoretic mobility of the resorcarene-octacarboxylic acids introduced here as pseudostationary phases is based on the eight partly deprotonated carboxylic groups. This offers a broad migration time window, which is the main parameter for the resolution of peaks. From three compounds with different alkyl chain lengths (C 1 , C 5 , C 11 ), the C 11 -resorcarene-octa-…

Fourier series for elliptic integrals and some generalizations via hypergeometric series

2008

Fourier series are derived for generalizations of the three canonical Legendre incomplete elliptic integrals using a hypergeometric series approach. The Fourier series for the incomplete Epstein–Hubbell integrals are obtained as special cases of the generalization of the Legendre integrals of the first and second kinds. The Fourier series for the integrals of the first and second kinds, and those for the Epstein–Hubbell integrals, were obtained recently using a different approach, but the series obtained for the generalization of the incomplete integral of the third kind is new. All cases of the integral of the third kind are given, with the modulus and the parameter being complex variables…

The paper offers a hypothesis of interpretation of the decorative patterns of the Casina cinese at the Favorita Park in Palermo which is based on the component "in Chinese style" that is characterized by a strong Confucian element.

Chemistry and reactivity of dinuclear manganese oxamate complexes: Aerobic catechol oxidation catalyzed by high-valent bis(oxo)-bridged dimanganese(I…

2006

[EN] The high-valent bis(oxo)-bridged dimanganese(IV) complexes with the series of binucleating 4.5-X-2-o-phenylenebis(oxamate) ligands (opbaX(2); X = H, Cl, Me) (1a-c) have been synthesized and characterized structurally, spectroscopically and magnetically. Complexes la-c possess unique Mn-2(mu-O)(2) core structures with two o-phenylenediamidate type additional bridges which lead to exceptionally short Mn-Mn distances (2.63-2.65 angstrom) and fairly bent Mn-O-Mn angles (94.1 degrees-94.6 degrees). The cyclovoltammograms of la-c in acetonitrile (25 degrees C, 0.1 M Bu4NPF6) show an irreversible one-electron oxidation peak at moderately high anodic potentials (E-ap = 0.50-0.85 V versus SCE),…
