Performance of Markers and the Homologous Series Method for Dead Time Estimation in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography

Abstract Two methods for dead time estimation (the use of markers and the homologous series mathematical method) are revised. Out of twelve assayed common markers, only KBr, KI, tartrazine, thiourea, uracil, and urea yielded retention times independent of the mobile phase composition in the range 10–90% acetonitrile, using a Zorbax Eclipse XDB−C18 column. On the other hand, the quality of the estimations provided by the homologous series method was limited by the mathematical approach and the data quality. With this method, the estimated dead time is an extrapolated value, which is severely affected by the data of the most retained compounds that act as leverage points, biasing the result. …
Fractal Dimension of Transdermal-Delivery Drug Models: 4-Alkylanilines

Abstract The pathways that exist in porous membranes used to deliver drugs form fractal percolating paths. For a homologous series of 4-alkylanilines, the fractal dimension D is calculated as a model for transdermal-delivery drugs. Program TOPO is used for the calculation of the solvent-accessible surface AS, which is denoted by the centre of a probe, which is allowed to roll on the outside while maintaining contact with the bare molecular surface S. Abstract The program MICHROM for the general treatment of chromatographic data is presented. MICHROM takes part in all the stages of the analytical process. It allows determination of dead time, smoothing of chromatograms, measurement of peak parameters, fitting of skewed peaks, and deconvolution of overlapped peaks. Tools for the experimental design, optimization of the mobile phase composition to resolve a mixture of analytes, and simulation of chromatograms in several experimental conditions, are implemented. Quantitation of hydrophobicity in micellar liquid chromatography

Abstract Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is shown to be a promising technique for measuring the hydrophobicity of solutes. The presence of micelles has a profound effect on the chromatographic characteristics of reversed-phase columns. The linear relationships between the logarithm, log k , of the retention factor and such diverse properties as the number of carbon atoms in homologous series, octanol–water partition coefficients and solvatochromic parameters, which are observed in conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), are not usually valid in MLC. Kinetic study of the release of aroma compounds in different model food systems

Abstract Kinetics of release as a function of time from different model food matrices (mineral water, an oil-in-water emulsion, a carbohydrate matrix and a complex matrix containing lipids and carbohydrates) were measured at 37 °C for four flavour compounds. Carbohydrate matrix and complex matrix were elaborated to have a similar rheological behaviour. Flavour compounds belonging to the strawberry flavour note were chosen: a homologous series of ethyl esters (C4, C6 and C8) and a ketone (C5). Stochastic models for wind speed forecasting

Abstract This paper is concerned with the problem of developing a general class of stochastic models for hourly average wind speed time series. The proposed approach has been applied to the time series recorded during 4 years in two sites of Sicily, a region of Italy, and it has attained valuable results in terms both of modelling and forecasting. Moreover, the 24 h predictions obtained employing only 1-month time series are quite similar to those provided by a feed-forward artificial neural network trained on 2 years data.
Guaranteed error bounds and local indicators for adaptive solvers using stabilised space–time IgA approximations to parabolic problems

Abstract The paper is concerned with space–time IgA approximations to parabolic initial–boundary value problems. We deduce guaranteed and fully computable error bounds adapted to special features of such type of approximations and investigate their efficiency. The derivation of error estimates is based on the analysis of the corresponding integral identity and exploits purely functional arguments in the maximal parabolic regularity setting. The estimates are valid for any approximation from the admissible (energy) class and do not contain mesh-dependent constants. Abstract In this article, we present a thorough numerical comparison between unsymmetric and symmetric radial basis function collocation methods for the numerical solution of boundary value problems for partial differential equations. A series of test examples was solved with these two schemes, different problems with different type of governing equations, and boundary conditions. Particular emphasis was paid to the ability of these schemes to solve the steady-state convection-diffusion equation at high values of the Peclet number.
