Abstract Missing data represent a general problem in many scientific fields above all in environmental research. Several methods have been proposed in literature for handling missing data and the choice of an appropriate method depends, among others, on the missing data pattern and on the missing-data mechanism. The spectral characteristics of the delta /sup 18/O isotopic ratio time series of the Quelccaya ice cap summit core are investigated with the multi taper method (MTM), the singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and the wavelet transform (WT) techniques for the 500 y long 1485-1984 period. The most significant (at the 99.8% level) cycle according to the MTM F-test has a period centered at 14.4 y while the largest variance explaining oscillation according to the SSA technique has a period centered at 12.9 y. Fast evaluation of a linear number of local exchange matrices

A fast method is described for evaluating multiple exchange matrices in a Gaussian atomic orbital basis. For insulators, it is asymptotically linear scaling, and is a generalization of the linear scaling exchange (LinK) method, which was formulated for a single exchange matrix [J. Chem. Phys. 109 (1998) 1663]. It is employed to evaluate exchange-type contractions of all derivative density matrices with two-electron integrals for a series of linear alkanes, linear polyacenes, and water clusters using STO-3G, 3-21G, and 6-31G* basis sets. Significant computational savings are obtained for molecules with as few as 10 non-hydrogen atoms.

Very low concentrations (pg mL(-1) or sub-pg mL(-1) level) along with the high salinity are the main problems in determining trace metal contents in seawater. About the reliability of the Maximum Entropy Method in reconstructing electron density: the case of MgO

Abstract The reliability of the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) to reconstruct finite temperature electron density (ED) is here discussed, investigating the case of periclase (MgO). A theoretical electron density has been generated by quantum mechanic calculations and folded with a function simulating atomic thermal motion, in order to produce a reference errorless ED [ρ(r)REF]. The Fourier coefficients of ρ(r)REF have been calculated, and used as “observed” diffraction intensities to reconstruct via MEM the original ED. Accurate expansion of cylindrical paraxial waves for its straightforward implementation in electromagnetic scattering

Abstract The evaluation of vector wave fields can be accurately performed by means of diffraction integrals, differential equations and also series expansions. In this paper, a Bessel series expansion which basis relies on the exact solution of the Helmholtz equation in cylindrical coordinates is theoretically developed for the straightforward yet accurate description of low-numerical-aperture focal waves. The validity of this approach is confirmed by explicit application to Gaussian beams and apertured focused fields in the paraxial regime. Finally we discuss how our procedure can be favorably implemented in scattering problems.

Transfer matrix method applied to the parallel assembly of sound absorbing materials

International audience; The transfer matrix method (TMM) is used conventionally to predict the acoustic properties of laterally infinite homogeneous layers assembled in series to form a multilayer. In this work, a parallel assembly process of transfer matrices is used to model heterogeneous materials such as patchworks, acoustic mosaics, or a collection of acoustic elements in parallel. In this method, it is assumed that each parallel element can be modeled by a 2 × 2 transfer matrix, and no diffusion exists between elements. Combinatorial aspects of L-convex polyominoes

We consider the class of L-convex polyominoes, i.e. those polyominoes in which any two cells can be connected with an ''L'' shaped path in one of its four cyclic orientations. The paper proves bijectively that the number f"n of L-convex polyominoes with perimeter 2(n+2) satisfies the linear recurrence relation f"n"+"2=4f"n"+"1-2f"n, by first establishing a recurrence of the same form for the cardinality of the ''2-compositions'' of a natural number n, a simple generalization of the ordinary compositions of n. Verbal sets and cyclic coverings

Abstract We consider groups G such that the set of all values of a fixed word w in G is covered by a finite set of cyclic subgroups. Fernandez-Alcober and Shumyatsky studied such groups in the case when w is the word [ x 1 , x 2 ] , and proved that in this case the corresponding verbal subgroup G ′ is either cyclic or finite. Answering a question asked by them, we show that this is far from being the general rule. However, we prove a weaker form of their result in the case when w is either a lower commutator word or a non-commutator word, showing that in the given hypothesis the verbal subgroup w ( G ) must be finite-by-cyclic.
