Prognostic significance of c-erB-2 mRNA in ovarian carcinoma.

1996

The oncogene specific mRNA of c-erbB-2 was detected by the S1 nuclease protection assay in 95 ovarian cancer specimens. In 79 primary carcinomas, we found 16 (20%) with strong expression, 13 (17%) with weak expression, 4 (5%) with very weak expression, and 46 (58%) with no expression. In 3 of 16 recurrencies (19%) a strong expression of c-erbB-2 mRNA was detected, in 2 (12%) weak expression was detected, and in 11 (69%) no expression of c-erbB-2 mRNA was detected. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed no significant association between strong expression of c-erbB-2 mRNA and survival of the 79 patients with primary cancer. However, in the subgroup of patients with FIGO (International Federation of …

Characterization of a Human Carcinosarcoma Cell Line of the Ovary Established after in Vivo Change of Histologic Differentiation

2001

Abstract Objectives. Cell lines are valuable in vitro models for clinical and basic research. Most ovarian cancer cell lines described are serous cystadenocarcinomas or poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. The establishment of ovarian cancer cell lines with rare histologic differentiation is especially of interest. We describe the establishment of a carcinosarcoma cell line of the ovary after in vivo selection. Methods. The cell line OV-MZ-22 was established from a solid tumor mass in the upper abdomen. At the time of establishment, the patient underwent secondary debulking and was pretreated with six cycles of cis -platinum/epirubicin/cyclophosphamide. Features of the cell line studied i…

Is the stripping technique a tissue-sparing procedure in large simple ovariancysts in children?

2008

Abstract Background Stripping of the cystic wall is performed by gynecologists to treat large ovarian cysts. Information in the pediatric population is poor. We prospectively evaluated the pathologic specimens of large ovarian cyst to determine whether the stripping technique is a tissue-sparing procedure even in this age. Methods We evaluated 5 patients. Samples were taken from the intermediate part of the cystic wall and from the layer covering the cyst during excision. The presence of ovarian tissue adjacent to the cyst wall, and the morphological features of the surrounding tissue were both evaluated. Pelvic ultrasound follow-up was also performed. Results Patients' mean age was 4.5 yea…

Serous Detachment of the Retina: A Complication of Branch Retinal Vein Stenosis

2005

The author reports a case of serous detachment of the retina, which has developed in an eye with veno-venous collaterals, secondary to stenosis of a branch of the central retinal vein near the optic disc. This complication has not previously been described in this retinal vascular obstructive disease.

Reconstruction of Peritoneal-like Structure in Three-Dimensional Collagen Gel Matrix Culture

1997

The peritoneum is a serous membrane consisting of different kinds of cells and extracellular matrix components (ECM). The aim of the present study was to develop a three-dimensional (3D) in vitro culture system for possible investigation of pathological conditions of the peritoneum. Human omental mesothelial cells (MC) and endothelial cells from the umbilical vein (EC) were cultivated either on (MC) or in (EC) a preformed type I collagen matrix. In 3D culture mesothelial cells showed their phenotypical in vivo characteristics and the synthesis of a new basal membrane (BM). Endothelial cells developed vessel-like structures, produce a BM and express E-selectin after TNF-alpha stimulation. Th…

Rituximab in refractory Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

2011

Introduction Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada (VKH) prognosis depends on early recognition and treatment; chronic disease may be developed when either delayed or inadequate treatment is performed, whereas other cases despite correct treatment are refractory to different drugs and also become chronic. We report a case of refractory VKH controlled with rituximab treatment. Case report A 41-year-old female with painful visual loss and headache was examined. (VA 0.4 in RE and hand movements (HM) in LE). Retinal examination demonstrated multiple serous retinal detachments in both eyes. High-dose oral steroids were started, followed by progressive tapering of prednisone. New acute anterior and posterior rela…

317 Role of integrins in the metastatic spread of high-grade serous ovarian cancer

2021

Introduction/Background* In high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) an early intraperitoneal metastatic spread is common which determines the therapeutical approach and prognosis. Integrins may be involved in metastatic spread of HGSOC. In this study, integrin expression was examined in primary tumour and metastases of HGSOC. Methodology The expression of integrin α2, α4, α5, α6, and β1 was assessed by immunostaining in tumour samples of the ovary, omentum, and peritoneum of each patient. Differences in integrin expression among tumour localisations and their association with clinicopathological parameters were examined by Fisher’s exact test. The impact of integrin expression on progressi…

Primary Epithelial Ovarian Neoplasms: New Concepts Concerning Origin, Pathogenesis and Classification Based on Morphology, Immunomarkers, Molecular F…

2011

The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of ovarian tumors, which first appeared in 1983 and since then has undergone a number of revisions, is based on morphologic features as well as on the concept that each category of ovarian tumors develops from a specific ovarian cell. According to this histogenetic classification, all the epithelial ovarian neoplasms are derived from the ovarian surface epithelium and/or from ovarian inclusion cysts, which are lined by the above epithelial cells. In recent years, a new approach to morphologic data, increasing presumptive evidence that the cell of origin of most, if not all, ovarian epithelial tumors may be extraovarian, especially from fall…

Interplay Between MicroRNAs and Oxidative Stress in Ovarian Conditions with a Focus on Ovarian Cancer and Endometriosis

2019

Ovarian cancer and endometriosis are two distinct gynaecological conditions that share many biological aspects incuding proliferation, invasion of surrounding tissue, inflammation, inhibition of apoptosis, deregulation of angiogenesis and the ability to spread at a distance. miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs (19–22 nt) that act as post-transcriptional modulators of gene expression and are involved in several of the aforementioned processes. In addition, a growing body of evidence supports the contribution of oxidative stress (OS) to these gynaecological diseases: increased peritoneal OS due to the decomposition of retrograde menstruation blood facilitates both endometriotic lesion developmen…
