Sympathetic activation in patients with heart failure and central sleep apnoea: is it friend or foe?

2023

This sub-study of the SERVE-HF study found unchanged peripheral nervous sympathetic activity (MSNA) in heart failure patients on medical treatment or on ASV after 12 weeks. Reduced MSNA was associated with worse prognosis only in the ASV group

Quality of life in women undergoing urinary diversion for bladder cancer: results of a multicenter study among long-term disease-free survivors

2012

Purpose: Women undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) and urinary diversion for bladder cancer experience substantial limitations in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, the level of discomfort caused by different urinary diversion has been never evaluated in long term survivors. The aim of this multicenter study is to evaluate differences in HRQOL among recurrence-free women undergoing cutaneous ureterostomy (CUS), Bricker's ileal conduit (BK-IC) and Orthotopic neobladder VIP (ONB-VIP) in disease-free females treated with radical cystectomy (RC), with long-term follow up (mean 60.1 months; range 36-122 months). Materials and methods: All consecutively treated female patients from t…

Potential and limitations of quantum extreme learning machines

2023

Quantum reservoir computers (QRC) and quantum extreme learning machines (QELM) aim to efficiently post-process the outcome of fixed -- generally uncalibrated -- quantum devices to solve tasks such as the estimation of the properties of quantum states. The characterisation of their potential and limitations, which is currently lacking, will enable the full deployment of such approaches to problems of system identification, device performance optimization, and state or process reconstruction. We present a framework to model QRCs and QELMs, showing that they can be concisely described via single effective measurements, and provide an explicit characterisation of the information exactly retriev…

Ultrafast Carrier Redistribution in Single InAs Quantum Dots Mediated by Wetting-Layer Dynamics

2019

Optical studies of single self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been a topic of intensive investigation over the past two decades. Due to their solid-state nature, their electronic and optical emission properties are affected by the particular crystal structure as well as many-body-carrier interactions and dynamics. In this work, we use a master equation for microstates (MEM) model to study the carrier capture and escape from single QDs under optical nonresonant excitation and under the influence of a two-dimensional (2D) carrier reservoir (the wetting layer). This model reproduces carrier dynamics from power-dependent and time-resolved microphotoluminescence experiments . Du…

Structures de déformation induites par surpressions de fluide dans les environnements sous-glaciaires et marin profonds : implications paléoenvironne…

2014

Soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDs) occur in unconsolidated sediments, during or shortly after deposition. SSDs are abundant in subglacial and deep-marine environments because of the development of fluid overpressure. Case studies of these two sedimentary environments were used (1) to reconstruct palaeoenvironments from SSDS, and (2) to define the impacts of SSDS on glacial morphologies and (3) petrophysical properties.(1) Analyses of strain regimes, deformation mechanisms, and chronologies in SSDs served to improve palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. These structures were used as proxys to estimate variations of ice flow velocities, ice thickness, meltwater production, and positio…

Pediatric Urinary Diversion: Review and Own Experience

1992

New insights into the diseases of childhood, profound improvements and new developments in surgical techniques as well as the knowledge gained from long-term follow-up have altered the strategies and indications for urinary diversion in childhood. Continent urinary diversion is generally the method of choice. We are able to construct high capacity, low pressure reservoirs to protect the upper urinary tract and achieve continence. Nowadays, there is hardly any indication for permanent cutaneous urinary diversion. Temporary and intermediate cutaneous diversion are used only when serious conditions such as renal function deterioration occur. The possibility to convert any incontinent form of u…

Reservoir monitoring using satellite SAR and GNSS: a case study in southern Italy

2018

Recently, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to relate water levels of a reservoir with its dam displacements. Water levels were determined via remote sensing, while dam displacements were measured via Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Results have shown that displacements and water levels are correlated.Water levels at the Magazzolo reservoir in southern Italy were firstly retrieved using two remote sensing approaches: by visual matching between the reservoir shoreline and contour lines, and by evaluating the surface extent via unsupervised classification to estimate the water levels with an area/depth relation. Dam displacements were measured using GPS receivers on the …

Subsequent Keyframe Generation for Visual Servoing

2021

International audience; In this paper, we study the problem of autonomous and reliable positioning of a camera w.r.t. an object when only this latter is known but not the rest of the scene. We propose to combine the advantages and efficiency of a visual servoing scheme and the generalization ability of a generative adversarial network. The paper describes how to efficiently create a synthetic dataset in order to train a network that predicts an intermediate visual keyframe between two images. Subsequent predictions are used as visual features to autonomously converge towards the desired pose even for large displacements. We show that the proposed method can be used without any prior knowled…

A Neural Architecture for Segmentation and Modelling of Range Data

2003

A novel, two stage, neural architecture for the segmentation of range data and their modeling with undeformed superquadrics is presented. The system is composed by two distinct neural stages: a SOM is used to perform data segmentation, and, for each segment, a multi-layer feed-forward network performs model estimation. The topology preserving nature of the SOM algorithm makes this architecture suited to cluster data with respect to sudden curvature variations. The second stage is designed to model and compute the inside-outside function of an undeformed superquadric in whatever attitude, starting form the (x, y, z) data triples. The network has been trained using backpropagation, and the we…
