Filtration pressure by bivalves affects the trophic conditions in Mediterranean shallow ecosystems

Bivalve filtration may control the amount of seston in coastal waters, reducing local euthrophication and keeping degrading phenomena like hypoxia and anthropogenic pollution under control. Two Sicilian brackish-marine ponds (Ganzirri and Faro) present us with the opportunity to gain data on the effect of bivalve filtration on the amount of particulate organic matter in the field. Food sources and lipid retention of zooplankton in subarctic ponds

SUMMARY 1. Subarctic ponds are seasonal aquatic habitats subject to short summers but often have surprisingly numerous planktonic consumers relative to phytoplankton productivity. Because subarctic ponds have low pelagic productivity but a high biomass of benthic algae, we hypothesised that benthic mats provide a complementary and important food source for the zooplankton. The relationship between food availability and growth in Mytilus galloprovincialis in the open sea (southern Mediterranean)

Abstract With the aim of gathering information about the possibility of culturing mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis ) in a south Mediterranean oligotrophic area, different lots of mussels were placed in culture at depths of −5 m and −15 m and their growth monitored on a monthly basis. Water residence time and the dynamics of toxic cyanobacteria

SUMMARY 1. Climate change affects aquatic ecosystems differently depending on local conditions. In the Mediterranean region, predicted drier seasons could especially affect lake water residence time and in consequence cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin dynamics. 2. Seasonal shifts in the diet of lake zooplankton revealed by phospholipid fatty acid analysis

We analysed the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles of seston and of the dominant zooplankter, Daphnia longispina, through the open water period in a small, dystrophic lake to investigate seasonal variation in the diet of Daphnia. Stable isotope mixing models in aquatic ecology require δ13C values for food web end members such as phytoplankton and bacteria, however it is rarely possible to measure these directly. Hence there is a critical need for improved methods for estimating the δ13C ratios of phytoplankton, bacteria and terrestrial detritus from within mixed seston.
