Hydromechanical behaviour of a volcanic ash
2013
This paper presents experimental analysis and numerical modelling aimed at improved understanding and prediction of the hydromechanical behaviour of volcanic ash at various states of saturation. Results from a comprehensive experimental programme are presented in order to characterise the response of the material in terms of matric suction and confining stress changes. The evolution of the yield stress at different suction levels has been quantified. The volumetric response with suction variations allowed the analysis of the collapse-upon-wetting behaviour. Water retention and permeability are also addressed. Tests results are used to calibrate a constitutive model based on the effective s…
Settlement Dynamics on the Banks of the Upper Tigris, Iraq: The Mosul Dam Reservoir Survey (1980)
2020
The paper describes a dataset of archaeological sites and villages now partially covered by the water of the Mosul Dam Reservoir. For the first time the dataset offers digitized information on c.150 archaeological sites detected during a survey carried out by the Iraqi State Organization for Antiquities and Heritage in the 1980s. Knowledge of the map of these sites will have a substantial impact on interpretation of Tigridian settlement dynamics. Funding statement: This research has received no specific grant from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.
Use of bitumen-stabilised ballast for improving railway trackbed conventional maintenance
2018
Despite its many advantages, ballasted track needs frequent maintenance to ensure an adequate quality of service. However, tamping, traditionally used to correct geometry, causes ballast degradation and loosening of the already compacted ballast layer, which quickly returns the track to its pre-maintenance position. Then, other maintenance techniques such as stoneblowing, as well as diverse solutions that reinforce trackbed, have been developed to reduce ballast settlement and particles degradation. Given the need to further advance research in this field, bitumen-stabilised ballast (BSB) has started to be investigated by the authors as a feasible solution thanks to its easy and quick appl…

Beyond Hunting Camps: Early Holocene Occupations in High Cantabrian Mountains (Spain)
1998
In the communication the results of the excavations in La Calvera rock shelter (Camaleño, Cantabria) are presented, including a set of new radiocarbonic dates and a reflection is made on the occupation of the Cantabrian mountains at the beginning of the Holocene.
The Madonie: Highlands in Sicily
2019
This chapter presents the results of the archaeological survey of selected areas across the Madonie mountain range in Sicily, at different heights. Several archaeological features have been mapped, documenting the human presence on these highlands over different millennia and dating it back at least to the Middle Neolithic. Traces of ancient cultures of Sicily have been recognized in the area, emphasizing the importance of this mountainous territory.
Archaeogenetics and Landscape Dynamics in Sicily during the Holocene: A Review
2021
The Mediterranean islands and their population history are of considerable importance to the interpretation of the population history of Europe as a whole. In this context, Sicily, because of its geographic position, represents a bridge between Africa, the Near East, and Europe that led to the stratification of settlements and admixture events. The genetic analysis of extant and ancient human samples has tried to reconstruct the population dynamics associated with the cultural and demographic changes that took place during the prehistory and history of Sicily. In turn, genetic, demographic and cultural changes need to be understood in the context of the environmental changes that took place…
Applicability of Existing Public Transport Sustainability Indicators to Norwegian Small Cities and Towns
2021
World-wide, developed countries tend to have a higher share of transport related emissions. In Norway, approximately one third of transport emissions are connected to passenger cars. With most inhabitants living in small cities and towns that have low population densities and high car dependency, and having made passenger transport decarbonization a national priority, there is a need to account for the success or failure of implemented sustainable transport solutions in Norway.Research on sustainable transport and indicators to measure its development tends to focus on large cities raising the question if indicators defined for large cities fit to the realities of smaller urban settlements?…
Institutional resources as a source of trade union power in Southern Europe
2017
Abstract Institutional resources are one of four sources of power available to trade unions (Gumbrell –McCormick and Hyman, 2013). Literature has tended to pay more attention to associational and organizational power and to emphasize the indispensable but problematic character of institutional resources. This paper examines the role of institutional resources in three Southern European countries (Greece, Portugal and Spain) which share common characteristic including post dictatorship political settlements; recent economic crises; external intervention. Comparative analysis draws out the distinctive role and character of institutional resources in Spanish industrial relation. It shows how t…
Miejskie wspólnoty i stowarzyszenia : próba portretu socjologicznego
2018
Ferdinand Tónnies zdefiniował socjologiczne rozumienie wspólnoty i stowarzyszenia. To dwie formy współżycia i współistnienia ludzi w przestrzeni społecznej. Współtworzą one przestrzeń miast, chociaż w starożytności dominowały wspólnoty, a dzisiaj bardziej stowarzyszenia.
