Sexual function in adult patients with classic bladder exstrophy: A multicenter study

2015

Summary Background The bladder exstrophy–epispadias complex (BEEC) comprises a spectrum of congenital anomalies that represents the severe end of urorectal malformations, and has a profound impact on continence as well as sexual and renal functions. Objective The relation between severity of BEEC and its associated functional impairments, on one hand, and the resulting restrictions in quality of life and potential psychopathology determine the patients' outcome. It is important for improving further outcome to identify BEEC-related sources of distress in the long term. Genital function and sexuality becomes an important issue for adolescent and adult BEEC individuals. Hence, the present stu…

Effects of moclobemide on sexual performance and nocturnal erections in psychogenic erectile dysfunction

2001

Rationale and objectives: We tested the hypothesis that the selective reversible MAO-A inhibitor moclobemide has a specific therapeutic effect on erectile dysfunction independent of its antidepressive properties. Methods: In a double-blind placebo controlled study, 12 male outpatients suffering from psychogenic erectile dysfunction without any other psychiatric disorder were investigated. Based on comprehensive diagnosis before the beginning of the study, organic factors relevant for sexual function were excluded. The treatment period was 8 weeks. Half the patients received 450 mg moclobemide during the first week, and 600 mg afterwards; the others received placebo. Apart from assessment of…

Ten-year follow-up of health-related quality of life among ambulatory persons with multiple sclerosis at baseline

2016

Purpose The aim of this 10-year follow-up study was to determine changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over time among ambulatory persons with MS (PwMS) at the baseline using generic and disease-specific instruments. Methods Of 109 independently walking PwMS included in a population-based study in 2002, 77 (70.6 %) were re-assessed in 2012. HRQoL was captured using the 36-Item Short Form Survey Instrument (RAND-36), 15D instrument (15D), and the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54 (MSQOL-54). Repeated-measures ANOVA and effect size (ES) calculations (Cohen’s d) were used in the statistical analysis. Results The RAND-36 physical health composite score (p = 0.003, ES = 0.26) and…

Sexual Function, Social Integration and Paternity of Males with Classic Bladder Exstrophy following Urinary Diversion.

2015

We evaluated patients with classic bladder exstrophy and a history of urinary diversion for sexual function, social integration and paternity. We reviewed the medical records of males older than 18 years with exstrophy who had undergone urinary diversion at our department between 1969 and 2014. Patients were invited for structured followup examinations and were asked to complete questionnaires relating to sexual function, social integration and paternity.Of 79 eligible patients 39 (49%) with a mean followup of 23.8 years (range 2 to 45) were included in the study. Of the patients 41% had undergone primary urinary diversion and 59% had undergone secondary urinary diversion after failed recons…

Evaluation of sexual function in females with exstrophy-epispadias-complex: a survey of the multicenter German CURE-Net

2016

Standardized knowledge about genital function in adult female individuals with exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC) is scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate sexual function using the standardized Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and to assess the influence of bladder and vaginal reconstruction and the presence of incontinence on FSFI results.Sixty-one females (aged ≥18 years) recruited by the German multicenter network for congenital uro-rectal malformations (CURE-Net) were asked to complete the FSFI and a self-designed semi-structured questionnaire assessing comprehensive medical data, gynecological, and psychosocial items. Twenty-one eligible females (34%) returned both quest…

Changes in sexual function and quality of life after single-incision mid-urethral sling for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.

2013

Abstract Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness and assess the changes in sexual function and quality of life after placement of a single-incision sling for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. Study design A prospective study of women diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence. The single-incision sling was implanted and patients were followed postoperatively for 6 months. The postoperative rate of continence, complications, changes in sexual function, and patient-reported quality of life were evaluated. Female Sexual Function in sexually active patients was evaluated before and after the single-incision sling procedure using the Female Sexual Function Index. From January…

Use of the Martius advancement flap for low rectovaginal fistulas

2019

Aim: The percentage recurrence after any surgical treatment for low rectovaginal fistula (LRVF) is unacceptably high. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short- and long-term results of the Martius procedure in a carefully selected series of patients with a LRVF of at least 1 cm diameter who had had at least two previous surgeries or in the presence of chronically inflamed local tissues. Method: Between January 2009 and April 2017, 24 patients with the abovementioned features were prospectively included in this study. Success was defined both as the absence of any subjective symptoms and the fistula, as confirmed by evaluation under anaesthesia. Postoperative complications were assess…

Sexual Function and Fertility of Women with Classic Bladder Exstrophy and Continent Urinary Diversion

2015

We evaluated the outcome in female patients with classic bladder exstrophy and continent urinary diversion for sexual function and fertility. We reviewed the medical records of female exstrophy patients who underwent continent urinary diversion in our department between 1969 and 2014. Patients were invited for followup examination and asked to complete questionnaires relating to sexual function, social integration and maternity.Of 38 eligible patients 29 (response rate 76%) with a followup of 22.3 years were included in study. Primary continent urinary diversion was done in 62% of patients and 38% underwent secondary continent urinary diversion after failed reconstruction of the exstrophic b…

Sexual, bladder and bowel function following different minimally invasive techniques of radical hysterectomy in patients with early-stage cervical ca…

2021

Abstract Purpose Despite the establishment of radical surgery for therapy of cervical cancer, data on quality of life and patient-reported outcomes are scarce. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate bladder, bowel and sexual function in women who underwent minimally invasive surgery for early-stage cervical cancer. Methods From 2007–2013, 261 women underwent laparoscopically assisted radical vaginal hysterectomy (LARVH = 45), vaginally assisted laparoscopic or robotic radical hysterectomy (VALRRH = 61) or laparoscopic total mesometrial resection (TMMR = 25) and 131 of them completed the validated German version of the Australian Pelvic Floor Questionnaire (PFQ).
