Vibration Monitoring of the Mechanical Harvesting of Citrus to Improve Fruit Detachment Efficiency

2019

The introduction of a mechanical harvesting process for oranges can contribute to enhancing farm profitability and reducing labour dependency. The objective of this work is to determine the spread of the vibration in citrus tree canopies to establish recommendations to reach high values of fruit detachment efficiency and eliminate the need for subsequent hand-harvesting processes. Field tests were carried out with a lateral tractor-drawn canopy shaker on four commercial plots of sweet oranges. Canopy vibration during the harvesting process was measured with a set of triaxial accelerometer sensors with a datalogger placed on 90 bearing branches. Monitoring of the vibration process, fruit pro…

Frequency-domain experimental setup for mechatronic and suspension system components

2021

This paper presents a frequency-domain experimental setup for modal analysis of mechatronic and suspension system components. Design, instrumentation and dynamic behavior of the one degree-of-freedom (DOF) system, capable of providing both, periodic and application-specific, excitation forces is described. The excitation is realized by an electromagnetic modal shaker with additional assembly and interface components designed and instrumented for frequency -domain analysis of vertical dynamics. Frequency response functions (FRFs) of the implemented system are experimentally measured and the associated basic model parameters are calculated, correspondingly identified. Accurate fit between the…

SHAKEDOWN ANALYSIS BY BEM

2000

In the ambit of the symmetric Galerkin boundary element formulation the statical shakedown load multiplier and the limit analysis are reformulated making use of macrozone modelling. The subdivision of the domain into macroelements makes it possible to deal with piecewise homogeneous materials of the body. For each macroelement a discretization of the boundary and a subdivision of the domain into portions called cells are performed in order to introduce the unknowns (i.e. traction and displacement discontinuities) on the boundary and material plastic laws appropriately interpolated. The weighed regularity imposed between adjacent macroelements produces algebraic operators which are symmetric…

Shakedown Analysis by Elastic Simulation

2000

Shakedown analysis of elastic plastic structures is widely credited as a valuable analytical/numerical tool for design purposes. For complex structures and loading conditions, e. g. for fast breeder nuclear reactor plants, full inelastic analysis is rarely performed, practically never within the early stages of the design advancement and the inherent decision process. The essential information therein needed can in fact be obtained, at moderate computational costs, by application of the shakedown methods and rules, at least within some limits related to the present developments of shakedown theory and its applicability to practical engineering problems, see e. g. Ponter et al. (1990), Carte…

Mutual entity authentication for LTE

2011

In this paper we outline the Authentication and Key Agreement protocol (EPS-AKA) found in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) systems. This architecture is the 3GPP version of a 4G access security architecture. The LTE security architecture is a mature evolved architecture, with both strengths and weaknesses. In this paper we propose an amendment to the EPS-AKA protocol to make it a full mutual (online) entity authentication protocol. We also analyze the proposal, highlighting both the improvements and the drawbacks of the new AKA protocol.

Eleonora Duse as Juliet and Cleopatra

2017

From her debut as Juliet in 1872 onwards, the career of Eleonora Duse (1858–1924) is marked by an evolving, changeable approach to her Shakespearean roles. In different ways and under diverse circumstances, each of her Shakespearean parts represented something of a turning-point in her cursus. Scholars have argued that life and art, emotional instinct and theatrical performance, coalesced seamlessly throughout her Shakespearean repertoire, and in particular in her interpretation of Cleopatra (Puppa 2009). Yet while this theory that she acted out her own personal life, and that her characters’ feelings coincided with her own, is an attractive one, it is also reductive. New evidence——the disc…

New ways of looking into handwritten miscellanies of the seventeenth century: the case of “Spes Altera”

2020

A large number of copies of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 2 circulated in handwritten miscellanies from the second quarter of the Seventeenth Century. Eleven of those copies have significant variant readings that have led critics to put forward different hypotheses regarding their nature and quality. Most critics, taking into account stylometric analyses, have regarded them as early drafts of Shakespeare’s printed version, and have agreed on their poor quality.By paying due attention to the text’s context of production and reception, we have reached a different conclusion regarding both the nature and quality of the handwritten versions of Sonnet 2. In our view, they are the product of a conscious r…

Rhetoric of academic applications : Perspectives from Quentin Skinner’s Forensic Shakespeare

2019

The tools of classical and Renaissance rhetoric that Quentin Skinner uses in his Forensic Shakespeare (2014) are here applied to a contemporary context. Skinner’s discussion might have a fairly direct value for a genre of writing that most academics today must master, namely the rhetoric of applications. They have been seldom discussed from a rhetorical perspective, although knowledge of rhetoric is highly valuable for applicants, evaluators and those deciding between applications. Skinner’s book contains both advices for applicants and discussions on both the criteria of application and the possibilities of their revisions in case of innovative applications. peerReviewed
