Fibrous reinforced concrete beams in flexure: Experimental investigation, analytical modelling and design considerations
2008
Abstract The flexural behavior of plain and fibrous reinforced concrete (FRC) beams under monotonic and cyclic actions was analysed. Twelve beams were reinforced with top and bottom longitudinal deformed steel bars and transverse steel stirrups. Concrete, having 30 MPa cylindrical strength, was reinforced with hooked steel fibres at a volume percentage of 1%. Beams, 600 mm in length and with a square side cross-section of 150 mm, were tested in flexure using a three point bending test, adopting three different cover thicknesses of 5, 15 and 25 mm, respectively. The results obtained show that the addition of fibers increases the bearing capacity of the beams and ensures more ductile behaviou…
Langevin dynamics simulations of a two-dimensional colloidal crystal under confinement and shear
2012
Langevin dynamics simulations are used to study the effect of shear on a two-dimensional colloidal crystal (with implicit solvent) confined by structured parallel walls. When walls are sheared very slowly, only two or three crystalline layers next to the walls move along with them, while the inner layers of the crystal are only slightly tilted. At higher shear velocities, this inner part of the crystal breaks into several pieces with different orientations. The velocity profile across the slit is reminiscent of shear banding in flowing soft materials, where liquid and solid regions coexist; the difference, however, is that in the latter case the solid regions are glassy while here they are …
An Ex-vivo Shear and tensile bond strengths of orthodontic molar tubes bonded using different techniques
2017
Background Molar bonding procedures need continuous improvement to be widely accepted clinically and eventually replace molar bands. Material and methods The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of enamel micro-abrasion and silane coating of the base of molar tubes on shear and tensile bond strengths of orthodontic molar tubes. A total of 200 third molars were randomly allocated into five groups of 40 teeth as follows: group 1: molar tubes bonded to etched teeth (37% phosphoric acid gel; control group); group 2: molar tubes bonded to etched teeth (37% phosphoric acid) with the addition of silane to the base of molar tubes; group 3: molar tubes bonded to teeth pre-treated with …
Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Hydrodynamics and Stresses in the PhEur/USP Disintegration Tester Under Fed and Fasted Fluid Characteristi…
2015
ABSTRACT: Disintegration of oral solid dosage forms is a prerequisite for drug dissolution and absorption and is to a large extent dependent on the pressures and hydrodynamic conditions in the solution that the dosage form is exposed to. In this work, the hydrodynamics in the PhEur/USP disintegration tester were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Particle image velocimetry was used to validate the CFD predictions. The CFD simulations were performed with different Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, representing fasted and fed states. The results indicate that the current design and operating conditions of the disintegration test device, given by the pharmacopoeias, are n…
Shear strength degradation due to flexural ductility demand in circular RC columns
2014
An analytical model was developed to estimate the shear-strength degradation and the residual capacity of circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to seismic action. The proposed model is an upgrade of a previously proposed model for axial force $$N$$ , bending moment $$M$$ and shear force $$V$$ ( $$N$$ – $$M$$ – $$V$$ ) interaction domain evaluation for rectangular and circular cross-section RC elements subjected to static loading. The model was extended to the case of circular cross-sections subjected to seismic actions with limitation of the range of variability of the deviation angle between the directions of the stress fields and the crack inclinations, as a function of the …
Effect of active application of self-etching ceramic primer on the long-term bond strength of different dental CAD/CAM materials
2021
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T08:36:43Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Background: The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the active application of self-etching ceramic primer (ME&P) on the bond strength of different dental CAD/CAM materials (Lithium Disilicate ceramic (LD), Leucite ceramic (LE), Zirconia reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (ZLS), and Hybrid ceramic (HC)) with thermocycling aging. Material and Methods: The samples were randomly divided into 16 groups (n = 20). Dual resin cement cylinders were made and light cured for 10 s (1.200 mW/cm2) for the shear bond strength test. 3-way ANOVA revealed that the factors w…
Systems for evaluating the correlation between soil cone penetrometer resistance and shear strength
2008
The aim of this research is to study possible correlations between soil compaction (and related soil cone penetrometer resistance measurements) and shear strength normal to the field plane, required to cut the soil with a subsoiler. A measurement system for sensing the soil cone penetrometer resistance was built mounting, on a frame fixed to the front part of a tractor, a rod and a penetration cone with a load cell. A load cell, mounted on the tractor drawbar, pulling a subsoiler, allowed to measure the shear strength normal to the field plane, required to cut the soil. Both load cells were connected, through a display, to a portable computer, where a software was used for acquiring the dat…
The Residual Shear Strength of the Shaly and Sandy Facies of the Opalinus Clay
2018
The paper presents a comprehensive laboratory campaign carried out with the aim to asses the residual strength of the Opalinus Clay. Ring shear tests with vertical effective stress up to 1 MPa were performed on remoulded samples of two different facies of the Opalinus Clay. Test results show that the «Shaly» facies is characterized by a low range of variation of residual strength while the strength of the «Sandy» facies is very sensitive to the variation of grain size distribution. Microstructural analyses (SEM) suggest that the difference in the observed mechanical behavior of the two facies can be related to different particles arrangements along the shear surfaces.
ANALISI TEORICO-SPERIMENTALE DEL COMPORTAMENTO A TAGLIO DI TRAVI PREFABBRICATE RETICOLARI MISTE
2014
An experimental campaign of three-point bending tests on specimens of Hybrid Steel Trussed Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) is presented. The scope of the experiments is the evaluation of the shear strength in the structural typology object of study. Two series of specimens are tested, subjected to positive and negative bending moment, respectively, with the aim to reproduce, in the first case, the condition in the midspan of a beam belonging to a framed structure and, in the second case, the behavior of the beam next to the column where the sign of the bending moment is reversed. The obtained experimental results are interpreted by means of an analytical model for the prediction of the shear resist…
