Statistical shape analysis of ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm: Correlation between shape and biomechanical descriptors

2020

An ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) is a heterogeneous disease showing different patterns of aortic dilatation and valve morphologies, each with distinct clinical course. This study aimed to explore the aortic morphology and the associations between shape and function in a population of ATAA, while further assessing novel risk models of aortic surgery not based on aortic size. Shape variability of n = 106 patients with ATAA and different valve morphologies (i.e., bicuspid versus tricuspid aortic valve) was estimated by statistical shape analysis (SSA) to compute a mean aortic shape and its deformation. Once the computational atlas was built, principal component analysis (PCA) allow…

Properties of mixed colloidal crystals

2007

We prepared colloidal crystals from aqueous suspensions of spherical, charged polystyrene spheres under deionised conditions. Using a home-built multipurpose light scattering apparatus we measured the static structure factor, the static shear modulus and the intermediate scattering function. In addition we also monitored also the conductivity as a function of the composition and the particle number density. For the mixture investigated the data are well described assuming the formation of randomly substituted body-centered-cubic crystals.

Shear Induced Demixing and Rheological Behavior of Aqueous Solutions of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

2003

The interrelation between the phase separation behavior and the rheological performance of aqueous solutions of high molecular weight (M w = 1 600 kg/mol) poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) was investigated. The system demixes upon heating and the cloud point temperature, T cp decreases steadily with rising polymer concentration up to 10 wt.-%. The application of shear supports phase separation and reduces T cp markedly. This observation is interpreted in terms of destruction of intersegmental clusters formed in the quiescent state owing to favorable interactions. Intrinsic viscosities and Huggins coefficients as well as the viscosities, η at higher polymer concentrations are closely connected wit…

Modes of motion in a confined colloidal suspension under shear

2004

We investigated aqueous suspensions of charged polystyrene latex spheres at low salt concentration under the combined influence of steady shear and confining walls. Their equilibrium structure was adjusted via the particle and salt concentration to be either fluid or body centred cubic. Using high-resolution real-space microscopy, we here present a first direct observation of collective modes of motion under shear. As a function of either shear rate and/or salt concentration, we find a continuous transition from registered to free sliding of layers accompanied by an equally continuous structural rearrangement lowering the dimensionality of long-ranged order.

Depositional model in subglacial cavities, Killiney Bay, Ireland. Interactions between sedimentation, deformation and glacial dynamics

2012

Subglacial meltwater drainage and sedimentary processes play a major role in ice-sheet dynamic but there is a lack of study of subglacial environment because modern ice-sheet beds remain inaccessible. Previous authors already intended to provide diagnostic criterion and recent investigations suggest that fluid pressure variations are a key factor in subglacial environment. This paper investigated the late Devensian sedimentary record in order to describe subglacial sedimentological facies associations and deformation features related to fluid overpressures. We used an integrated approach, based on stratigraphy, sedimentology and deformations styles to demonstrate a subglacial depositional m…

Solidification behavior of the theta system 2-propanol/poly(n-butyl methacrylate) I. Influences of thermoreversible gelation on stationary flow

1994

Zero shear viscosities, η0, were determined by means of a magnetoviscometer for melts of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (M = 8.7 to 450 kg/mol, T =53.5 to 200°C) and for concentrated solutions of the highest molecular weight sample in isopropanol (T = 34.8 to 131.5 °C). Master curves can be constructed in both cases if the reference temperature is set proportional to the gelation temperature of the particular fluid. Special intersegmental interactions (eventually leading to thermoreversible gelation) can above all be felt in η0 (T) and in M c , the critical molecular weight determined in plots of log η0 vs. log M. As the temperature is lowered, the behavior changes from WLF to Arrhenius, and M …

2019

Abstract. The evolution of the tropopause inversion layer (TIL) during cyclogenesis in the North Atlantic storm track is investigated using operational meteorological analysis data (Integrated Forecast System from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). For this a total of 130 cyclones have been analysed during the months August through October between 2010 and 2014 over the North Atlantic. Their paths of migration along with associated flow features in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) have been tracked based on the mean sea level pressure field. Subsets of the 130 cyclones have been used for composite analysis using minimum sea level pressure to filter t…

The Role of Wind Speed and Wind Shear for Banner Cloud Formation

2019

Abstract Banner clouds are clouds that appear to be attached to the leeward face of a steep mountain. This paper investigates the role of wind speed and wind shear for the formation of banner clouds. Large-eddy simulations are performed to simulate the flow of dry air past an idealized pyramid-shaped mountain. The potential for cloud formation is diagnosed through the Lagrangian vertical parcel displacement, which in the case of a banner cloud shows a plume of large values in the lee of the mountain. In addition, vortical structures are visualized through streamlines and their curvature. A series of sensitivity experiments indicates that both the flow and the banner cloud occurrence are lar…

Experimental modeling of viscous inclusions in a circular high-strain shear rig: Implications for the interpretation of shape fabrics and deformed en…

2002

[1] Deformation experiments with initially spherical and prolate viscous inclusions suspended in a viscous Newtonian matrix in a circular high strain annular shear rig provide insights on the shape development of inclusions in high strain shear zones during progressive deformation. Inclusions with a specific viscosity ratio with respect to the matrix material show distinct types of three-dimensional shape development. For instance, at a high viscosity ratio between matrix and inclusion a pulsating ellipsoid develops, which both continuously rotates and changes its shape from a sphere to an ellipsoid and back to a sphere. The experiments show that the shape of an inclusion that has a viscosi…
