Post-fire soil functionality and microbial community structure in a Mediterranean shrubland subjected to experimental drought.

2016

Fire may cause significant alterations in soil properties. Post-fire soil dynamics can vary depending, among other factors, on rainfall patterns. However, little is known regarding variations in response to post-fire drought. This is relevant in arid and semiarid areas with poor soils, like much of the western Mediterranean. Furthermore, climate change projections in such areas anticipate reduced precipitation and longer annual drought periods, together with an increase in fire severity and frequency. This research evaluates the effects of experimental drought after fire on soil dynamics of a Cistus-Erica shrubland (Central Spain). A replicated (n = 4) field experiment was conducted in whic…

Environment and subsistence strategies at La Viña rock shelter and Llonin cave (Asturias, Spain) during MIS3

2020

The sites of La Viña and Llonin have an important archaeological sequence corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage 3: Mousterian, Aurignacian and Gravettian periods. La Viña is a complex rock shelter with continuous occupations, being some (basically the Mousterian and the Aurignacian in contact levels) altered by post-depositional processes as a consequence of the irregular bedrock morphology and the type of processes involved. The cave of Llonin mainly consists of occasional human/carnivores occupations during the Mousterian and the Gravettian. The current multidisciplinary research has allowed us to obtain and match several preliminary data: site formation processes, fauna and stable isotop…

Innovative Applications and Experiments for the Protection of Archaeological Sites

2020

Nowadays, the protection in situ, the enhancement and the fruition of archaeological sites are issues that are even more relevant, if we take into account the effects caused, in recent decades, by climate change both on the conservation of the most fragile artefacts and on the well-being of visitors. New questions related to the ‘recover of identity’ are raised by the relationships that the protection interventions establish with the environmental context (external) and with the ancient ruins (internal), imposing an interpretation of the project as a union of landscape, morphological, climatic, technical, use and management aspects, or by requiring a holistic and integrated approach, from a…

Early pastoral communities in the mountains of Sicily. Prehistoric evidence from Vallone Inferno (Scillato) in the palaeoenvironmental framework of t…

2021

Abstract This paper discusses the Middle Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age phases of the occupation of a rock shelter at Vallone Inferno (Scillato, Palermo) in Sicily. Vallone Inferno is a key site for studying the early establishment and development of pastoralism in the prehistoric mountainous environments of Sicily. Seasonal use of the site as a shelter is documented for the earliest pastoral communities that exploited the Madonie mountain range. The results of the analysis of pottery and lithic assemblages contribute to the definition of two chronocultural frameworks that were linked by the same economic subsistence base. The special role of obsidian emerges, while the mobility pattern…

Luminescence Dating of Fluvial Deposits in the Rock Shelter of Cueva Antón, Spain

2015

Abstract The fluvial sediments at Cueva Antón, a Middle Palaeolithic rock shelter located in the valley of the River Mula (Southeast Spain), produced abundant lithic assemblages of Mousterian affinities. Radiocarbon dates are available for the upper part of the archaeological succession, while for the middle to lower parts chronometric data have been missing. Here we present luminescence dating results for these parts of the succession. Quartz OSL on small aliquots and single grain measurements yield ages ranging from 69 ± 7 ka to 82 ± 8 ka with a weighted mean of 72 ± 4 ka for sub-complexes AS2 to AS5. Equivalent dose estimates from large aliquots were highest and inconsistent with those f…

Air‑raid shelters: civil war heritage in Valencia city

2017

Memorial sites are an interesting part of the wide range of Spanish Civil War heritage. The city of Valencia preserves a large number of vestiges of that time, among them, more than three hundred air‑raid shelters. In this article we consider these bomb shelters, taking into account the new circumstances relating to this heritage, starting in 2017, when new legislative and management scenarios were set in motion. The approval of the Valencian Autonomous Community Law for Democratic Memory and Coexistence, a recent modification of the Valencian Cultural Heritage Act which expressly highlights civil war heritage, as well as unprecedented activity by the Valencia City Council regarding its pre…

Battered Women: Victims or Survivors?

2011

AbstractFrom 1970, research into women’s responses to marital violence became much more intense than ever before. Academic literature emphasizes two explanatory perspectives: of the woman as passive victim and of the woman who uses strategies to protect herself. The main goals of this study were to explore the effectiveness of personal strategies that women use to survive violence, the factors that influence the recurrence of violence, and the demand for shelter and the role of shelters in the process of recovery and healing. We interviewed eight battered women, from rural areas, all of whom had taken refuge in shelters, some of them several time. We identified a number of psychopathologica…

Sustainable conservation: the state of art and the need of guidelines about protection and enjoyment of the archeological Heritage

2019

Within the scientific debate about the conservation, in general, of Cultural Heritage and, in particular, of Archaeological Heritage which are characterized by a dual tangible and intangible nature; and in consistence with Technological Culture for its features concerning the right development and enjoyment of the Heritage, the present essay offers a critical interpretation of the literature about a protection system with an architectural shelter for archaeological sites. On the basis of the critical elements detected in the activities that took place over the past sixty years, this essay underlines the absolute impossibility to postpone the definition of the guidelines which need to be alw…
