Attenuation of low frequency magnetic fields produced by HV underground power cables
2015
High-voltage underground cable systems are becoming more common as the demand for electrical power within urban centers increase, also considering the difficulties in building new overhead power lines in the vicinity of city centers because of authorization issues. Therefore, interest towards the evaluation of magnetic fields produced by high-voltage power lines has been triggered during the last decade and concern about effects on human health of exposure to extra low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields due to power lines has been increasing as well. Hence, the evaluation of the magnetic field produced by underground power cables is important in order to develop methods for mitigating their in…
The Shielding Effect of Drilling Fluids on MWD Downhole Compasses: The Effect of Drilling Fluid Composition, Contaminants and Rheology
2014
Materials such as added clays, weight materials, drill solids and metalic wear products in the drilling fluid are known to distort the geomagnetic field at the location of the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tool magnetometers that are used to measure the direction of well path. This distortion contributes to substantial errors in determination of azimuth while drilling deviated wells. These errors may result in missing the target of a long deviated 12 ¼″ section in the range of 1–200m; representing a significant cost to be mitigated. The error becomes even more pronounced if drilling occurs in arctic regions close to the magnetic North Pole (or South Pole). The effect on the magnetometer …
Three-Dimensional Neutronics and Shielding Analyses for the ITER Divertor
1996
3-D neutronics and shielding analyses have been performed for the divertor region of the ITER interim design. The peak neutron wall loading in the divertor region is 0.6 MW/m{sup 2} at the divertor cassette dome. The total nuclear heating in the 60 divertor cassettes is 102.4 MW. The peak helium production in the VV behind the pumping ducts is 0.5 He appm/FPY implying that rewelding might be feasible. The total nuclear heating in the parts of the TF coils in the divertor region is only 2.1 kW. 5 refs., 4 figs., 5 tabs.
Impact of industrial environments on the PC-based measurements
2007
In the paper we present a simple and fast procedure to evaluate the impact of the electromagnetic disturbances, which can be present in the industrial locations, on the measurements performed by a generic PC-based measurement instrument. The method is conceived starting from the data obtained by subjecting the instruments to the disturbances prescribed by the IEC-61326 standard. The results show that, even under heavy disturbances, the common good practices of shielding and grounding allow a correct employment of this kind of instrumentation.
Local aromaticity in polyacenes manifested by individual proton and carbon shieldings: DFT mapping of aromaticity
2019
Exponential dependencies between locally calculated geometric and magnetic indexes of aromaticity, harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) and nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS)(0), NICS(1) and NICS(1)zz, and the number of conjugated benzene rings in linear acenes, from benzene to decacene were observed at B3LYP/6-311+G** level of theory. Correlations between HOMA and NICS indexes showed exponential dependencies and were fitted with simple three-parameter function. Similar correlations between both indexes of aromaticity and proton and carbon nuclear isotropic shieldings of individual acene rings were observed. Contrary to proton data, the predicted 13 C nuclear isotropic sh…
Assessment of the CTOCD-DZ methodin a hierarchy of coupled cluster methods
2010
Gauge origin independent calculations of nuclear magnetic shielding tensors are carried out inside the formalism of the continuous transformation of the origin of the current density leading to formal annihilation of its diamagnetic contribution (CTOCD-DZ). We employ the unrelaxed linear response approach with a hierarchy of different coupled cluster methods in order to assess the importance of the level of approximation in the coupled cluster expansion. The basis set dependence of the computed nuclear magnetic shielding constants is also analyzed in the series of correlation consistent basis sets, with the aim of designing optimized basis sets of relatively small size.
Dosimetric perturbations of a lead shield for surface and interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy.
2014
In surface and interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy with either (60)Co, (192)Ir, or (169)Yb sources, some radiosensitive organs near the surface may be exposed to high absorbed doses. This may be reduced by covering the implants with a lead shield on the body surface, which results in dosimetric perturbations. Monte Carlo simulations in Geant4 were performed for the three radionuclides placed at a single dwell position. Four different shield thicknesses (0, 3, 6, and 10 mm) and three different source depths (0, 5, and 10 mm) in water were considered, with the lead shield placed at the phantom surface. Backscatter dose enhancement and transmission data were obtained for the lead shields…
A Monte Carlo-aided design of a modular 241Am-Be neutron irradiator
2013
Monte Carlo studies aimed at designing a modular 241Am-Be neutron irradiator for testing neutron detectors and personal dosimeters and processing large volume samples are reported in this study. The evaluation of the shapes and thicknesses of the moderator and shielding materials was carried out by a MCNP5 Monte Carlo simulation code. The reliability of the simulation was experimentally verified by the activation of gold foils and TLD dosimeter measurements in an irradiation cell placed at the center of the test configuration.
Convergence of nuclear magnetic shieldings and one‐bond 1J(11 B 1H) indirect spin–spin coupling constants in small boron molecules
2018
Self‐consistent field Hartree–Fock (SCF‐HF), density functional theory (B3LYP, KT1, KT2, and KT3), and coupled‐cluster calculations of the nuclear magnetic shielding constants of BH and BH3 molecules have been conducted to characterize the convergence of individual results obtained with correlation‐ and polarization‐consistent basis sets. The individual 11B and 1H NMR parameters were estimated in the complete basis set limit and compared with benchmark literature results. The SCF‐HF and density functional theory B3LYP predicted boron shieldings and shielding anisotropies of BH significantly differed from the results obtained by coupled‐cluster with single, double, and perturbative treatment…
The hyperfine structure in the rotational spectra of D2(17)O and HD(17)O: Confirmation of the absolute nuclear magnetic shielding scale for oxygen
2015
Guided by theoretical predictions, the hyperfine structures of the rotational spectra of mono- and bideuterated-water containing (17)O have been experimentally investigated. To reach sub-Doppler resolution, required to resolve the hyperfine structure due to deuterium quadrupole coupling as well as to spin-rotation (SR) and dipolar spin-spin couplings, the Lamb-dip technique has been employed. The experimental investigation and in particular, the spectral analysis have been supported by high-level quantum-chemical computations employing coupled-cluster techniques and, for the first time, a complete experimental determination of the hyperfine parameters involved was possible. The experimental…
