Radiation transmission data for radionuclides and materials relevant to brachytherapy facility shielding

2008

To address the limited availability of radiation shielding data for brachytherapy as well as some disparity in existing data, Monte Carlo simulation was used to generate radiation transmission data for 60Co, 137CS, 198Au, 192Ir 169Yb, 170Tm, 131Cs, 125I, and 103pd photons through concrete, stainless steel, lead, as well as lead glass and baryte concrete. Results accounting for the oblique incidence of radiation to the barrier, spectral variation with barrier thickness, and broad beam conditions in a realistic geometry are compared to corresponding data in the literature in terms of the half value layer (HVL) and tenth value layer (TVL) indices. It is also shown that radiation shielding calc…

Status of ITER TBM port plug conceptual design and analyses

2014

The test blanket module port plug (TBM PP) consists of a TBM frame and two TBM-sets. However, at any time of the ITER operation, a TBM set can be replaced by a dummy TBM. The frame provides a standardized interface with the vacuum vessel (VV)/port structure and provides thermal isolation from the shield blanket. As one of the plasma-facing components, it shall withstand heat loads while at the same time provide adequate neutron shielding for the VV and magnet coils. The frame design shall provide a stable engineering solution to hold TBM-sets and also provide a mean for rapid remote handling replacement and refurbishment. This paper presents main design features of the conceptual design of …

Legri Background. Short Term Variability

2001

Background modelling for LEO satellites with high orbital inclination is not an easy task. The diffuse background component is dominated by the background coming from strong interactions with Earth magnetosphere trapped particles. Magnetic shielding is variable along the orbits and crosses through the SAA induce high radioactivity decay counting ratios. The aim of this paper is to present a model for the background total counting ratio of the 17 operative CdZnTe detectors on LEGRI in the short time scales and for observing periods outside crosses through SAA having enough time to cool LEGRI after the last SAA transit. Fluxes measured have been modelled in terms of the Mcllwain parameter L u…

Radiation protection evaluations about a radiopharmaceutical production center based on a cyclotron

2012

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has became a worldwide used functional and molecular imaging technique. Most of PET (or PET/CT- Computed Tomography) diagnostic facilities are installed within large population cities as well as dimensions of modern medical cyclotrons allow to install them inside hospitals or other health centers. Therefore, special radiation protection evaluations to assure safety operational conditions to operators and population are required. This work is focused on training activities oriented to evaluate PET/Cyclotron radiation protection procedures or to study special safety systems. The students are particularly oriented to determine shielding thickness according to…

Evaluation of the shielding in a treatment room with an electronic brachytherapy unit.

2017

Esteya® (Elekta Brachytherapy, Veenendaal, The Netherlands) is an electronic brachytherapy (eBT) system based on a 69.5 kVp x-ray source and a set of collimators of 1 to 3 cm in diameter, used for treating non-melanoma skin cancer lesions. This study aims to estimate room shielding requirements for this unit. The non-primary (scattered and leakage) ambient dose equivalent rates were measured with a Berthold LB-133 monitor (Berthold Technologies, Bad Wildbad, Germany). The latter ranges from 17 mSv h-1 at 0.25 m distance from the x-ray source to 0.1 mSv h-1 at 2.5 m. The necessary room shielding was then estimated following US and some European guidelines. The room shielding for all barriers…

3-D Shielding Analyses of the Vertical and Mid-Plane Ports in ITER

1996

A three dimensional (3-D) shielding analysis of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) has been performed with the aim of calculating the nuclear heating on the magnet system, correlating it to the existing vertical and horizontal ports. When these openings are left unshielded, more than 50 kW are calculated for the upper half of Toroidal Field Coil system and two of the Poloidal Field Coils. A simple plug, with same thickness as of the vacuum vessel can lower the heating to meet the imposed requirements. 5 refs., 6 figs., 4 tabs.

Magnetic shielding of soft protons in future X-ray telescopes: the case of the ATHENA Wide Field Imager

2018

Both the interplanetary space and the Earth magnetosphere are populated by low energy ($\leq300$ keV) protons that are potentially able to scatter on the reflecting surface of Wolter-I optics of X-ray focusing telescopes and reach the focal plane. This phenomenon, depending on the X-ray instrumentation, can dramatically increase the background level, reducing the sensitivity or, in the most extreme cases, compromising the observation itself. The use of a magnetic diverter, deflecting protons away from the field of view, requires a detailed characterization of their angular and energy distribution when exiting the mirror. We present the first end-to-end Geant4 simulation of proton scattering…

Prediction of water's isotropic nuclear shieldings and indirect nuclear spin–spin coupling constants (SSCCs) using correlation‐consistent and polariz…

2009

Density functional theory (DFT) was used to estimate water's isotropic nuclear shieldings and indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in the Kohn-Sham (KS) complete basis set (CBS) limit. Correlation-consistent cc-pVxZ and cc-pCVxZ (x = D, T, Q, 5, and 6), and their modified versions (ccJ-pVxZ, unc-ccJ-pVxZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ-J) and polarization-consistent pc-n and pcJ-n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) basis sets were used, and the results fitted with a simple mathematical formula. The performance of over 20 studied density functionals was assessed from comparison with the experiment. The agreement between the CBS DFT-predicted isotropic shieldings, spin-spin values, and the experimenta…

Electron Correlation or Basis Set Quality: How to Obtain Converged and Accurate NMR Shieldings for the Third-Row Elements?

2022

The quality of theoretical NMR shieldings calculated at the quantum-chemical level depends on various theoretical aspects, of which the basis set type and size are among the most important factors. Nevertheless, not much information is available on the basis set effect on theoretical shieldings of the NMR-active nuclei of the third row. Here, we report on the importance of proper basis set selection to obtain accurate and reliable NMR shielding parameters for nuclei from the third row of the periodic table. All calculations were performed on a set of eleven compounds containing the elements Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, or Cl. NMR shielding tensors were calculated using the SCF-HF, DFT-B3LYP, and C…
