ATHENA is an advanced X-ray observatory designed by a large European consortium to address the science theme "Hot and Energetic Universe" recently selected by ESA for L2 – the second Large-class mission within the Cosmic Vision science program (launch scheduled in 2028). Thermal Filters for the ATHENA X-IFU: Ongoing Activities Toward the Conceptual Design

ATHENA is the L2 mission selected by ESA to pursue the science theme “Hot and Energetic Universe.” One of the two focal plane instruments is the X-ray Integral Field Unit, an array of TES microcalorimeters operated at T $$<$$ 100 mK. To allow the X-ray photons focused by the telescope to reach the detector, windows have to be opened on the cryostat thermal shields. X-ray transparent filters need to be mounted on these open windows to attenuate the IR radiation from warm surfaces, to attenuate RF electromagnetic interferences on TES sensors and SQUID electronics, and to protect the detector from contamination. Flow resistance law under equilibrium bed-load transport conditions

Abstract The uniform flow resistance equation, in the form due to Manning or Darcy-Weisbach, is often applied to determine the stage-discharge relationship of a river cross-section. The application of this equation, namely the slope-area method, allows to indirectly measure by water level readings the corresponding river discharge. Lessons learned with the SAGE spectrometer

The SAGE spectrometer combines a high-efficiency γ-ray detection system with an electron spectrometer. Some of the design features have been known to be problematic and surprises have come up during the early implementation of the spectrometer. Tests related to bismuth germanate Compton-suppression shields, electron detection efficiency and an improved cooling system are discussed in the paper.

Lightning-current distribution in MV grids interconnected earthing systems

The paper presents first investigations results on the effects of lightning stroke on medium voltage (MV) installations' earthing systems, connected together with the metal shields of the MV distribution grid cables. The study enables to evaluate the distribution of the lightning current among interconnected earth electrodes in order to assess if the interconnection, usually done for reducing earth potential rise during an earth fault, can give place to dangerous situations far from the installation hit by the lightning stroke. On the effects of HV/MV stations on global grounding systems

The METERGLOB project has faced the issue of the identification of Global Grounding Systems. One of the main point of the problem is to define if an interconnection of single grounding systems gives place to a Global Grounding System in any condition and for every kind of ground fault. This paper focuses the attention on what happens in the case of single line to ground fault inside a HV/MV station whose ground electrode is connected to the cable' shields of the MV lines outgoing the station and supplying the secondary substations of a given area.

Effects of double ground faults in Wind Farms collector cables

Medium Voltage collector cables of Wind Farms have metal shields connected to the grounding systems of the towers and of the connection station. Thanks to this bonding, when a ground fault occurs, the fault current splits itself among all the grounding systems of the wind farm, this causing a reduction of the ground potential rise at the fault location. Friction Factor for Gravel-Bed Channel with High Boulder Concentration

This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation on flow resistance law for a gravel-bed channel having bed arrangements characterized by different values of the number of boulders. The dependence is studied of a parameter, proposed for describing the gravel-bed surfaces, on the boulder concentration and on the ratio between the median diameter of the coarser particles and the median diameter of the bed layer. The influence of roughness geometry and shields parameter on flow resistance in gravel-bed channels

The spatial variability of bed particles of a gravel-bed channel is analysed and treated experimentally in order to simulate the effects of the arrangement of coarse bed elements on the flow resistance law. For the studied bed patterns, characterized by the concentration Γ of coarser elements arranged on the bed layer, a particle arrangement parameter α is proposed. Electromagnetic interference shielding is an important aspect of modern communication and computer technology. Carbon nanotube cellulose nanocomposite (CNTCNC) provides a novel material as an alternative to traditional metal-based shields for EMI shielding.
