The effect of the wheat crisis of 1629-1631 forced the city of Valencia to develop variou…
Albert O. Hirschman, Europe, and the Postwar Economic Order, 1946–52
2022
Abstract Between 1946 and 1952, Albert Hirschman worked as an economist in charge of the Western European desk of the research branch of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, DC. In this position he wrote extensively on patterns of European postwar reconstruction and the creation of a new world economic order. Given his deep knowledge and prewar experiences, Italy and France were his first areas of specialization, although Hirschman soon contributed to the analysis of the Marshall Plan, the shaping of the European Payments Union, and the problem of the dollar shortage. This article provides a comprehensive interpretation of this early stage of Hirschman's intel…
Comparing Different Crowd Emergency Evacuation Models Based on Human Centered Sensing Criteria
2014
Emergency evacuation of crowds is a fascinating phenomenon that has attracted researchers from various fields. Better understanding of this class of crowd behavior opens up for improving evacuation policies and smarter design of buildings, increasing safety. Recently, a new class of disruptive technology has appeared: Human-centered sensing which allows crowd behavior to be monitored in real-time, and provides the basis for real-time crowd control. The question then becomes: to what degree can previous crowd models incorporate this development, and what areas need further research? In this paper, the authors provide a survey that describes some widely used crowd models and discuss the advan…
2020
During the Liberal Triennium, the first law of public instruction is approved in Spain, and the project of general regulations of primary schools is rehearsed on an interim basis. The education is directed to boys, as future citizens, must strengthen the liberal system while girls must attend home and family. The reform failed due to the shortage of public funds, and the short time the law was in force. After that attempt, this legal initiative would not be considered again with the consolidated constitutional system, unlike other projects of the triennium.Fecha de envio / Submission date: 12/02/2020Fecha de aceptacion / Acceptance date: 10/04/2020
Delayed transmission of a parasite is compensated by accelerated growth.
2005
Compensatory or ‘catch-up’ growth following prolonged periods of food shortages is known to exist in many free-living animals. It is generally assumed that growth rates under normal circumstances are below maximum because elevated rates of growth are costly. The present paper gives experimental evidence that such compensatory growth mechanisms also exist in parasitic species. We explored the effect of periodic host unavailability on survival, infectivity and growth of the fish ectoparasiteArgulus coregoni. Survival and infectivity ofA. coregonimetanauplii deprived of a host for selected time periods were age dependent, which indicates that all metanauplii carry similar energy resources for …
Cooperative Inventory control
2005
In multi-retailer inventory control the possibility of sharing setup costs motivates communication and coordination among the retailers. We solve the problem of finding suboptimal distributed reordering policies that minimize setup, ordering, storage, and shortage costs incurred by the retailers over a finite horizon. Neuro-dynamic programming (NDP) reduces the computational complexity of the solution algorithm from exponential to polynomial on the number of retailers.
Processes and experiences of Portugal's international recruitment scheme of Colombian physicians: Did it work?
2017
Abstract The Portuguese Ministry of Health performed five international recruitment rounds of Latin American physicians due to the need for physicians in certain geographic areas of the country and in some specialties, as a temporary solution to shortages. Among these recruitments is that of Colombian physicians in 2011 that was the largest of the five groups. This paper presents an evaluation of the international recruitment procedure of Colombian physicians based on the criteria of procedural outcomes and health system outcomes. The methodology used is qualitative, based on semi-structured interviews with key informants and Colombian physicians recruited in Portugal and also on documentar…
