Delayed and incomplete treatment may result in dural fistula development in children with Vein of Galen malformation
2017
The association of dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) in children with Vein of Galen malformation (VGM) has recently been reported for the first time. In a larger series of cases treated with transarterial NBCA embolization, 30% had DAVF. We wanted to analyze the development of DAVF in our cohort of children with VGM and to evaluate whether their occurrence depends on different treatment timing and embolic materials. We analyzed 43 VGM cases treated with a combined transarterial and transvenous approach between 2003 and 2016. In our early series until 2011, we used coils solely in 21 children. Since 2012, 22 children were treated with the combination of coils and Onyx. In the early series…
Rifampin-impregnated silicone catheters: a potential tool for prevention and treatment of CSF shunt infections.
2003
Background: Infection continues to be one of the major complications of cerebro-spinal fluid shunting procedures. Recent insights in the pathophysiological mechanism of these foreign body infections have elucidated the difficulty of achieving successful treatment without device removal. The development of a rifampin-impregnated silicone catheter yielded excellent results in infection prevention and treatment in vitro as well as in an animal model. Patients and Methods: Here, we describe the application of this device in two patients with a complicated course of shunt infection. Results: In one patient the rifampin-impregnated shunt system was implanted after external drainage to prevent fur…
A stereotactic device for rabbits based on mandibular and cranial landmarks
2008
✓ The authors have developed a stereotactic device for use in rabbits that uses the plane at the base of the mandible combined with cranial sutures as an anatomical reference. The device was developed for a study designed to evaluate catheters for infection prophylaxis, and this required the implantation of silicone catheters along a reproducible trajectory through the lateral ventricle. Cadaver and atlas studies demonstrated consistent spatial relationships between intracranial structures and the surface plane on which the animals were resting during the surgery. This plane is formed by the 2 mandibular angles and the mandibular tip. The authors developed a stainless steel stereotactic dev…
A nonlinear biomechanical model for evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid shunt systems.
1994
In view of complications arising from physical properties of cerebrospinal fluid shunts, a biomechanical model of hydrocephalus was set up to study in vivo parameters that may influence their function. These include: intracranial pressure, compliance and pulses, intrathoracic, intra-abdominal, and subcutaneous pressures, and the effects of siphonage and repeated valve flushing. Each of these factors was studied separately upon shunt implantation in the model. Results of testing of a sample low-pressure valve with antisiphon device conformed with consumer information in regard to valve opening pressure and pressure flow measurements. No customer information, however, was supplied concerning …
A survey on current practice in the neurosurgical management of preterm infants with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus in Germany.
2012
Background and Study Aims Different approaches to the management of preterm infants with posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) are described in the literature. Likewise, neurosurgical and pediatric surgical departments in German hospitals use different methods to treat these patients. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the current situation regarding the management of PHH, which is a first and essential step toward the development of standards of practice. Patients and Methods In the second half of 2009, we sent standardized questionnaires to 139 neurosurgical departments (number of returned questionnaires: 98) and 73 pediatric surgical departments (returned questionnaires: 62) t…
