Mediterranean transcriptions in Sicily

2014

Territory and memory: The Landing of the Allies in Sicily in 1943

2012

The concept of memory (memorial site) has gained crucial importance in recent years for the identification of places (areas) and in the affirmation of local identities. The memorial sites are areas where usually tragic events have occurred and resulted in a cultural change. In these places there are still signs of these historical events and/or tangible and intangible indications created by the society such as: monuments, obelisks, marble inscriptions, others. Sicily represents an ideal area for studying memorial sites; not only because of the number of dominations in the past centuries, but also for the significance of all places where the mafia has taken its root. These elements have caus…

Sequence of deformation in the sicilidi units (northern sicilian chain)

2004

The foredeep deposits of Northern Sicily, indicated as Sicilidi units, have undergone different deformations' since Oligocene time. The resulting tectonic Structures, analysed in several outcrops in the Eastern Madonie Mts, are 1 cm-to- 100 m in scale and are similar to the larger structures forming the Sicily belt, allowing for scale extrapolation. Also the overprinting relationships of the minor structures recorded in the so-called Tufiti di Tusa reflect the sequence of fault activation which determined the present-day geometry of the tectonic units, suggesting that the tectonic evolution of the foreland basin developed during the stacking of the Maghrebide fold-and-thrust belt. The overp…

Discrimination of almonds (Prunus dulcis) geographical origin by minerals and fatty acids profiling

2016

Twenty-one almond samples from three different geographical origins (Sicily, Spain and California) were investigated by determining minerals and fatty acids compositions. Data were used to discriminate by chemometry almond origin by linear discriminant analysis. With respect to previous PCA profiling studies, this work provides a simpler analytical protocol for the identification of almonds geographical origin. Classification by using mineral contents data only was correct in 77% of the samples, while, by using fatty acid profiles, the percentages of samples correctly classified reached 82%. The coupling of mineral contents and fatty acid profiles lead to an increased efficiency of the clas…

Production technology of early-Hellenistic lime-based mortars from a Punic-Roman residential area at Palermo (Sicily)

2016

The topic of this study was the mineralogical and petrographic characterization of lime-based mortars of Hellenistic-Roman age (3rd century BC), taken from a residential area located in the historical centre of Palermo, near the walls of the Punic-Roman Neapolis, recently brought to light by excavations carried out by the Soprintendenza BB.CC.AA. of Palermo at Palazzo del Gran Cancelliere (Palermo). The collected mortars have been analyzed by optical microscopy (PLM), X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The study was aimed to define the “recipe” (composition of temper and binder, temper size distrib…

Ripostigli “misti” dalla Sicilia centro-meridionale

2011

It is remarkable the discovery in the hinterland of Sicily of three “mixed” hoards, including not only coins, but also of bronze scraps and small fragmentary objects. They demonstrate that in these centers, still in the 4th century BC, the coin was considered a worthless piece of metal and that other bronze objects were used as medium of exchange. The subject of further study is the so-called closet of Milocca-Milena (IGCH 2162), which is attributed to the site of Monte Raffe

Late Pleistocene vertebrate - bearing deposits at San Teodoro Cave (North-Eastern Sicily): Preliminary data on faunal diversification and chronology

2008

Abstract This paper deals with the chronology and the possible correlations among levels of different excavated areas in the Pleistocene vertebrate-bearing deposits at the large San Teodoro Cave (North-Eastern Sicily). Two trenches have been excavated along the eastern side of the cave, located at a distance from the entrance, respectively, of 8 m ( α trench) and 28 m ( β trench) and at different depths. Lithological features, biometrical data from small mammals and ecological data from molluscs point to similar environmental conditions for the α trench deposits and those located along the eastern wall of the cave in the eastern part of the β trench. The same evidence, and the taphonomic fe…
