Ceramiche di età islamica provenienti da Castello della Pietra (Trapani)

2012

This paper presents the first results of the study on the medieval ceramic discovered during the diggings in the hilltop of Castello della Pietra (Trapani) in the years 1973-74. The research is still in progress. Materials were found within cavities reused as dumps and are exceptionally well preserved. Within the ceramic uncovered, there are fragments of tableware, storage vessels and amphorae. These wares were used by some of the people occupying the site between the second half of the 10th century and the 11th century. Links with Ifriqija are proved by the significant importation of glazed wares.

A new record and molecular characterization of the Green Turtle Chelonia mydas (Testudines, Cheloniidae) in Sicilian coastal waters

2017

A juvenile specimen of the Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas, was recovered in Sicilian coastal waters close to Avola (Syracuse province, south-eastern Sicily, Italy). Before being released, the specimen was measured and inspected for the presence of ingested hooks or other possible harms to its health. A fragment of the mtDNA marker COI was amplified and sequenced in order to provide the first molecular data for the species from the central Mediterranean area. The possible influence of climate change on the occurrence of this thermophilic species in the central Mediterranean area is briefly discussed.

Observations on mucus aggregates along Sicilian coasts during 1991–1992

1995

Abstract The results of some observations on gelatinous material accumulating on the sea ground and free floating in the water column along Sicilian coasts are reported. The phenomenon showed different development patterns moving from the Tyrrherian to the Jonian coast and to the Sicilian Channel. Moreover, in 1991, mucus aggregates in the Tyrrhenian sea showed a similar structure, behaviour and origin to those observed in the Adriatic sea, whereas, in 1992, only a massive growth of metaphytic threadlike algae, more or less producing gelatinous sheaths, occurred.

Archaeometry of Sicilian glazed pottery

2004

Petrographic and chemical analyses of the “ceramic body” of 114 majolica artefacts manufactured in Sicily over a wide time range (16th–-19th century) are presented. All the analysed samples, which belong to museums and private collections, were previously attributed to Sicilian workshops based on stylistic features evaluated by expert historians of art. Unambiguous identification of the production sites of majolica handicrafts in Sicily remains, however, open to question when this relies only on purely stylistic considerations. To this end compositional and/or textural markers have been searched for in the “ceramic body” of the majolica artefacts in order to differentiate between the centre…

COMPOSITION OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS IN CALENDULA SUFFRUTICOSA (ASTERACEAE) FROM SICILY

2016

The genus Calendula L. (Calenduleae Cass., Asteraceae) includes several species having medicinal properties. Pharmacological studies reveal, for instance, that C. officinalis L. exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, antinflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant properties; C. arvensis L. has antibacterial, antinflammatory, antimutagenic and haemolytic activities; C. suffruticosa Vahl has antimicrobial activity, especially against pathogenic microorganisms as Pseudomonas syringae Van Hall, Pseudomonas fluorescens (Flügge) Migula, Xanthomonas campestris (Pammel) Dowson and Agrobacterium tumefaciens Smith & Townsend. Nevertheless, despite a long tradition of use of the above species, and others,…

Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

2013

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.

PRELIMINARY CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF TUNISIN MONOVARIETAL VIRGIN OLIVE OILS AND COMPARISON WITH SICILIAN ONES.

2007

Work was carried out on the characterization of monovarietal virgin olive oils (VOO) from Tunisia and Sicily (Italy). The two main Tunisian VOO (cvv. Chétoui of the North and cv. Chemlali grown in the Center and some regions of the South) and three principal Sicilian VOO (cvv. Nocellara del Belice, Biancolilla and Cerasuola) were studied. Moreover, the Chétoui oils were tested in a rain-fed control and an irrigation regime. All olive samples were picked at three different stages of ripeness. Analyses of major components (fatty acids and triacylglycerols) and minor ones (squalene, tocopherols and phenolic compounds) were carried out. Chétoui oils had a higher level of phenolic compounds foll…
